Amasías, rey de Judá

1En el segundo año de Joás hijo de Joacaz, rey de Israel, Amasías hijo de Joás, rey de Judá, ascendió al trono. 2Tenía veinticinco años cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó en Jerusalén veintinueve años. Su madre era Joadán, oriunda de Jerusalén. 3Amasías hizo lo que agrada al Señor, aunque no como lo había hecho su antepasado David. En todo siguió el ejemplo de su padre Joás, 4pero no se quitaron los altares paganos, sino que el pueblo siguió ofreciendo sacrificios y quemando incienso en ellos.
5Después de afianzarse en el poder, Amasías ajustició a los ministros que habían asesinado a su padre el rey. 6Sin embargo, según lo que ordenó el Señor, no mató a los hijos de los asesinos, pues está escrito en el libro de la ley de Moisés: «A los padres no se les dará muerte por la culpa de sus hijos, ni a los hijos se les dará muerte por la culpa de sus padres, sino que cada uno morirá por su propio pecado».14:6 Dt 24:16
7Amasías derrotó a diez mil edomitas en el valle de la Sal; también conquistó la ciudad de Selá y le puso por nombre Joctel, que es como se conoce hasta el día de hoy.
8Por aquel tiempo, Amasías envió mensajeros a Joás, hijo de Joacaz y nieto de Jehú, rey de Israel, con este reto: «¡Sal para que nos enfrentemos!»
9Pero Joás, rey de Israel, le respondió a Amasías, rey de Judá: «El cardo del Líbano le mandó este mensaje al cedro: “Entrega tu hija como esposa a mi hijo”. Pero luego pasaron por allí las fieras del Líbano, y aplastaron el cardo. 10De hecho, has derrotado a los edomitas, y el éxito se te ha subido a la cabeza. Está bien, jáctate si quieres, pero quédate en casa. ¿Para qué provocas una desgracia que significará tu perdición y la de Judá?»
11Amasías no le hizo caso. Así que Joás, rey de Israel, marchó a Bet Semes, en Judá, para enfrentarse con él. 12Los israelitas batieron a los de Judá, y estos huyeron a sus hogares. 13En Bet Semes, Joás, rey de Israel, capturó a Amasías, rey de Judá, hijo de Joás y nieto de Ocozías. Luego fue a Jerusalén y derribó ciento ochenta metros14:13 ciento ochenta metros. Lit. cuatrocientos codos. de la muralla, desde la puerta de Efraín hasta la puerta de la Esquina. 14Además, se apoderó de todo el oro, la plata y los utensilios que había en el templo del Señor y en el tesoro del palacio real. También tomó rehenes, y regresó a Samaria.
15Los demás acontecimientos del reinado de Joás, y todo lo que hizo y su poderío, incluso la guerra que sostuvo contra Amasías, rey de Judá, están escritos en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Israel. 16Joás murió y fue sepultado en Samaria con los reyes de Israel. Y su hijo Jeroboán le sucedió en el trono.
17Amasías hijo de Joás, rey de Judá, sobrevivió quince años a Joás hijo de Joacaz, rey de Israel. 18Los demás acontecimientos del reinado de Amasías están escritos en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Judá. 19Como se tramó una conspiración contra él en Jerusalén, Amasías huyó a Laquis; pero lo persiguieron y allí lo mataron. 20Luego lo llevaron a caballo hasta Jerusalén, la Ciudad de David, y allí fue sepultado con sus antepasados.
21Entonces todo el pueblo de Judá tomó a Azarías,14:21 Azarías. Lit. Uzías. que tenía dieciséis años, y lo proclamó rey en lugar de su padre Amasías. 22Y fue Azarías quien, después de la muerte del rey Amasías, reconstruyó la ciudad de Elat y la reincorporó a Judá.
Jeroboán II, rey de Israel
23En el año quince del reinado de Amasías hijo de Joás, rey de Judá, Jeroboán hijo de Joás, rey de Israel, ascendió al trono, y reinó en Samaria cuarenta y un años. 24Jeroboán hizo lo que ofende al Señor, pues no se apartó de ninguno de los pecados con que Jeroboán hijo de Nabat hizo pecar a Israel. 25Él fue quien restableció las fronteras de Israel desde Lebó Jamat14:25 Lebó Jamat. Alt. la entrada de Jamat. hasta el mar del Arabá, según la palabra que el Señor, Dios de Israel, había dado a conocer por medio de su siervo Jonás hijo de Amitay, el profeta de Gat Jefer. 26Porque el Señor había visto que todos los habitantes de Israel, esclavos o libres, sufrían amargamente, y que no había nadie que los ayudara. 27Pero el Señor los salvó por medio de Jeroboán hijo de Joás, pues había dicho que no borraría de la tierra el nombre de Israel.
28Los demás acontecimientos del reinado de Jeroboán, y todo lo que hizo y su poderío, incluso sus guerras en las que recuperó Damasco y Jamat para Israel,14:28 para Israel (lectura probable; véase Siríaca); para Judá en Israel (TM). están escritos en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Israel. 29Jeroboán murió y fue sepultado con sus antepasados, los reyes de Israel. Y su hijo Zacarías le sucedió en el trono.
Amaziah king of Judah
1In the second year of Jehoash14:1 Hebrew Joash, a variant of Jehoash; also in verses 13, 23 and 27 son of Jehoahaz king of Israel, Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah began to reign. 2He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem for twenty-nine years. His mother’s name was Jehoaddan; she was from Jerusalem. 3He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, but not as his father David had done. In everything he followed the example of his father Joash. 4The high places, however, were not removed; the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there.
5After the kingdom was firmly in his grasp, he executed the officials who had murdered his father the king. 6Yet he did not put the children of the assassins to death, in accordance with what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses where the Lord commanded: ‘Parents are not to be put to death for their children, nor children put to death for their parents; each will die for their own sin.’14:6 Deut. 24:16
7He was the one who defeated ten thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt and captured Sela in battle, calling it Joktheel, the name it has to this day.
8Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, with the challenge: ‘Come, let us face each other in battle.’
9But Jehoash king of Israel replied to Amaziah king of Judah: ‘A thistle in Lebanon sent a message to a cedar in Lebanon, “Give your daughter to my son in marriage.” Then a wild beast in Lebanon came along and trampled the thistle underfoot. 10You have indeed defeated Edom and now you are arrogant. Glory in your victory, but stay at home! Why ask for trouble and cause your own downfall and that of Judah also?’
11Amaziah, however, would not listen, so Jehoash king of Israel attacked. He and Amaziah king of Judah faced each other at Beth Shemesh in Judah. 12Judah was routed by Israel, and every man fled to his home. 13Jehoash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Ahaziah, at Beth Shemesh. Then Jehoash went to Jerusalem and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate – a section about four hundred cubits long.14:13 That is, about 180 metres 14He took all the gold and silver and all the articles found in the temple of the Lord and in the treasuries of the royal palace. He also took hostages and returned to Samaria.
15As for the other events of the reign of Jehoash, what he did and his achievements, including his war against Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel? 16Jehoash rested with his ancestors and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel. And Jeroboam his son succeeded him as king.
17Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah lived for fifteen years after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel. 18As for the other events of Amaziah’s reign, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah?
19They conspired against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish, but they sent men after him to Lachish and killed him there. 20He was brought back by horse and was buried in Jerusalem with his ancestors, in the City of David.
21Then all the people of Judah took Azariah,14:21 Also called Uzziah who was sixteen years old, and made him king in place of his father Amaziah. 22He was the one who rebuilt Elath and restored it to Judah after Amaziah rested with his ancestors.
Jeroboam II king of Israel
23In the fifteenth year of Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah, Jeroboam son of Jehoash king of Israel became king in Samaria, and he reigned for forty-one years. 24He did evil in the eyes of the Lord and did not turn away from any of the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit. 25He was the one who restored the boundaries of Israel from Lebo Hamath to the Dead Sea,14:25 Hebrew the Sea of the Arabah in accordance with the word of the Lord, the God of Israel, spoken through his servant Jonah son of Amittai, the prophet from Gath Hepher.
26The Lord had seen how bitterly everyone in Israel, whether slave or free, was suffering;14:26 Or Israel was suffering. They were without a ruler or leader, and there was no-one to help them. 27And since the Lord had not said he would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven, he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam son of Jehoash.
28As for the other events of Jeroboam’s reign, all he did, and his military achievements, including how he recovered for Israel both Damascus and Hamath, which had belonged to Judah, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel? 29Jeroboam rested with his ancestors, the kings of Israel. And Zechariah his son succeeded him as king.
