Шаул выбрал себе в войска в Исроиле три тысячи человек. 2Две тысячи были с ним в городе Михмасе и в нагорьях Вефиля, а тысяча – с его сыном Ионафаном в городе Гиве, что в земле Вениамина. Остальной народ он отпустил по домам.
3Ионафан напал на сторожевую заставу филистимлян в Геве, и филистимляне услышали об этом. Тогда Шаул велел трубить в рога по всей стране и сказал:
– Пусть услышат евреи!
4И весь Исроил узнал новость: Шаул напал на филистимскую заставу и теперь филистимляне возненавидели Исроил. Народ был призван присоединиться к Шаулу в Гилгале.
5Филистимляне собрались воевать с Исроилом, у них было три тысячи13:5 В других рукописях: «тридцать тысяч». колесниц, шесть тысяч колесничих и столько воинов, сколько песка на морском берегу. Ослушание Шаула
Шаул остался в Гилгале, и все воины, которые были с ним, тряслись от страха. 8Он выждал семь дней – время, определённое Самуилом, но Самуил всё не приходил в Гилгал, и люди Шаула начали разбегаться. 9Тогда Шаул сказал:
– Приведите ко мне животных, предназначенных для жертв всесожжения и жертв примирения.
И он сам принёс жертву всесожжения.
10Как раз в то время, когда он закончил жертвоприношение, пришёл Самуил, и Шаул вышел, чтобы приветствовать его.
11– Что ты сделал? – спросил Самуил.
Шаул ответил:
– Когда я увидел, что люди разбегаются, ты не пришёл в назначенное время, а филистимляне собираются в Михмасе, 12я подумал: «Теперь филистимляне спустятся в Гилгал, выступив против меня, а я так и не попросил благословения от Вечного». Поэтому я решил, что должен принести жертву всесожжения.
13– Ты поступил безрассудно, – сказал Самуил. – Ты не исполнил повеления, которое дал тебе Вечный, твой Бог. Если бы ты не сделал этого, Он установил бы твоё царство над Исроилом навсегда. 14Но теперь твоё царствование не устоит. Вечный нашёл себе человека по сердцу и избрал его вождём своего народа, потому что ты не исполнил повеления Вечного.
15Затем Самуил пошёл из Гилгала в Гиву, что в земле Вениамина. Шаул пересчитал людей, которые были с ним, и их набралось около шестисот человек.

22Поэтому в день сражения ни у одного воина Шаула и Ионафана не было в руке меча или копья, они были только у Шаула и у его сына Ионафана.
Подвиг Ионафана
23Отряд филистимлян вышел к михмасской переправе.

5¶ And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude: and they came up, and pitched in Michmash, eastward from Beth-aven. 6When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits. 7And some of the Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. 8¶ And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him. 9And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering. 10And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.13.10 salute: Heb. bless
11¶ And Samuel said, What hast thou done? 17¶ And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of Shual: 18And another company turned the way to Beth-horon: and another company turned to the way of the border that looketh to the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.
19¶ Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears: 20But all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock. 21Yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to sharpen the goads.13.21 a file: Heb. a file with mouths, or Heb. a pim, a third of a shekel13.21 sharpen: Heb. set 22So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found. 23And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the passage of Michmash.13.23 garrison: or, standing camp
