Herrens trofasthed imod sit folk
1Halleluja!
Tak Herren, for han er god.
Hans trofasthed varer til evig tid.
2Hvem har tal på alle hans undere?
Hvordan kan vi nogensinde takke ham nok?
3Velsignede er de, der gør det gode,
de, der altid handler ret.
4Husk på mig, Herre, når du velsigner dit folk,
giv også mig del i dine goder.
5Lad mig se dit folk få fremgang,
lad mig glædes sammen med dine udvalgte,
juble med det folk, som tilhører dig.
6Vi har svigtet dig, som vore forfædre gjorde,
vi har begået fejl og handlet forkert.
7Vore forfædre ænsede ikke dine undere i Egypten,
de glemte hurtigt din trofasthed imod dem,
i stedet gjorde de oprør imod dig ved Det Røde Hav.
8Alligevel frelste Herren sit folk for sin æres skyld
og for at vise sin magt for verden.
9Han truede Det Røde Hav, så det tørrede ud,
og folket kunne gå tørskoet over.
10Han frelste dem fra deres fjender,
friede dem fra egypternes had.
11Vandet skyllede hen over forfølgerne,
så de druknede alle som en.
12Da troede folket på Guds løfter
og brød ud i lovsang til ham.
13Men de glemte snart, hvad Herren havde gjort,
de holdt op med at søge hans vilje.
14I ørkenen krævede de kød at spise,
de udfordrede Guds tålmodighed.
15Han gav dem, hvad de forlangte,
men straffede dem også for deres oprør.
16Nogle i lejren blev misundelige på Moses
og på Aron, Guds udvalgte præst.
17Som straf åbnede jorden sig og opslugte Datan,
lukkede sig over Abiram og de medsammensvorne.
18Ild for ned fra himlen
og fortærede dem, der gjorde oprør.
19Ved Horebs bjerg støbte de en tyrekalv,
de tilbad en afgud af metal.
20De byttede Guds herlighed bort
for et billede af et dyr, der æder græs.
21De glemte den Gud, der førte dem ud af Egypten,
han, som reddede dem på forunderlig vis.
22Tænk på de mirakler, han udførte,
de fantastiske undere ved Det Røde Hav.
23Gud var lige ved at udrydde sit oprørske folk,
men hans tjener Moses gik i forbøn for dem,
så de ikke blev tilintetgjort af hans vrede.
24De nægtede at gå ind i det frugtbare land,
for de troede ikke på Guds løfte.
25De sad bare i deres telte og surmulede
og ville slet ikke høre på Herrens ord.
26Derfor svor han højt og helligt,
at oprørerne skulle dø i ørkenen.
27Deres efterkommere skulle spredes blandt folkeslagene
og gøres til flygtninge i fremmede lande.
28Dernæst tilbad de Ba’al i Peor,
de holdt fest og ofrede til livløse afguder.
29Deres opførsel krænkede Herren dybt,
og han lod en pest bryde ud iblandt dem.
30Men Pinehas tog mod til sig og greb ind,
og det gjorde, at plagen holdt op.
31Pinehas viste sig som en gudfrygtig mand,
og det vil han altid blive husket for.
32Ved Meribas kilder gjorde de oprør igen,
og Moses faldt i unåde hos Herren.
33De gjorde ham nemlig så oprørt,
at han talte i vrede og handlede overilet.
34De undlod også at tilintetgøre de folkeslag,
som Herren havde befalet dem at udrydde.
35De giftede sig tilmed ind i deres familier,
lærte sig deres ugudelige skikke,
36så de dyrkede de fremmedes afguder
og derved blev skyld i deres egen ulykke.
37De ofrede både deres sønner og døtre
til de fremmede folkeslags guder.
38Fordi de myrdede uskyldige børn
og ofrede dem til afguderne,
blev landet besmittet af det udgydte blod.
39Guds folk var blevet urent i hans øjne,
deres handlinger viste deres utroskab mod Herren.
40Derfor blussede Guds vrede op imod dem,
han følte afsky for sit ejendomsfolk.
41Han overgav dem i fremmedes vold,
deres fjender undertrykte dem.
42De gjorde livet surt for dem
og kuede dem på alle måder.
43Gang på gang befriede Herren sit folk,
men de blev ved med at gøre oprør
og falde dybere og dybere i synd.
44Alligevel kunne han ikke lukke øjnene for deres nød,
han hørte deres råb om nåde.
45Han havde jo indgået en pagt med sit folk,
og hans trofasthed forbød ham at udslette dem helt.
46Han sørgede for, at de fremmede herskere
fik medlidenhed med dem.
47Vor Herre og Gud, frels os!
Bring os tilbage fra landflygtigheden,
så vi kan give dig taknemmelighedsofre
og lovprise dit hellige navn.
48Lovet være Herren, Israels Gud.
Lad os prise ham nu og til evig tid.

2Who can utter the mighty acts of the LORD? who can shew forth all his praise?
3Blessed are they that keep judgment, and he that doeth righteousness at all times.
4Remember me, O LORD, with the favour that thou bearest unto thy people: O visit me with thy salvation;
5That I may see the good of thy chosen, that I may rejoice in the gladness of thy nation, that I may glory with thine inheritance.
6We have sinned with our fathers, we have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly.
7Our fathers understood not thy wonders in Egypt; they remembered not the multitude of thy mercies; but provoked him at the sea, even at the Red sea.
8Nevertheless he saved them for his name’s sake, that he might make his mighty power to be known.
9He rebuked the Red sea also, and it was dried up: so he led them through the depths, as through the wilderness.
10And he saved them from the hand of him that hated them, and redeemed them from the hand of the enemy.
11And the waters covered their enemies: there was not one of them left.
12Then believed they his words; they sang his praise.

14But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, and tempted God in the desert.106.14 lusted…: Heb. lusted a lust
15And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul.
16They envied Moses also in the camp, and Aaron the saint of the LORD.
17The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, and covered the company of Abiram.
18And a fire was kindled in their company; the flame burned up the wicked.
19They made a calf in Horeb, and worshipped the molten image.
20Thus they changed their glory into the similitude of an ox that eateth grass.
21They forgat God their saviour, which had done great things in Egypt;
22Wondrous works in the land of Ham, and terrible things by the Red sea.
23Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach, to turn away his wrath, lest he should destroy them.
24Yea, they despised the pleasant land, they believed not his word:106.24 the pleasant…: Heb. a land of desire
25But murmured in their tents, and hearkened not unto the voice of the LORD.
26Therefore he lifted up his hand against them, to overthrow them in the wilderness:106.26 to overthrow: Heb. to make them fall
27To overthrow their seed also among the nations, and to scatter them in the lands.106.27 To overthrow: Heb. To make them fall
28They joined themselves also unto Baal-peor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead.
29Thus they provoked him to anger with their inventions: and the plague brake in upon them.
30Then stood up Phinehas, and executed judgment: and so the plague was stayed.
31And that was counted unto him for righteousness unto all generations for evermore.
32They angered him also at the waters of strife, so that it went ill with Moses for their sakes:
33Because they provoked his spirit, so that he spake unadvisedly with his lips.
34They did not destroy the nations, concerning whom the LORD commanded them:
35But were mingled among the heathen, and learned their works.
36And they served their idols: which were a snare unto them.
37Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils,
38And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan: and the land was polluted with blood.
39Thus were they defiled with their own works, and went a whoring with their own inventions.
40Therefore was the wrath of the LORD kindled against his people, insomuch that he abhorred his own inheritance.
41And he gave them into the hand of the heathen; and they that hated them ruled over them.
42Their enemies also oppressed them, and they were brought into subjection under their hand.
43Many times did he deliver them; but they provoked him with their counsel, and were brought low for their iniquity.106.43 brought…: or, impoverished, or, weakened
44Nevertheless he regarded their affliction, when he heard their cry:
45And he remembered for them his covenant, and repented according to the multitude of his mercies.
46He made them also to be pitied of all those that carried them captives.
47Save us, O LORD our God, and gather us from among the heathen, to give thanks unto thy holy name, and to triumph in thy praise.
