Les conseils d’un père
1Ecoutez, mes fils, l’instruction d’un père,
soyez attentifs pour acquérir du discernement.
2Car c’est un bon enseignement que je vous donne.
N’abandonnez pas l’éducation que je vous ai donnée,
3car j’ai été, moi aussi, un fils pour mon père,
et ma mère me chérissait comme un enfant unique.
4Mon père m’a enseigné et m’a dit :
« Que ton cœur retienne mes paroles,
suis mes préceptes, et tu vivras.
5Acquiers la sagesse et l’intelligence,
n’oublie pas, ne dévie pas de ce que je t’ai appris.
6N’abandonne pas la sagesse, et elle te gardera,
aime-la, et elle te protégera.
7Voici le début de la sagesse :
acquiers la sagesse,
recherche l’intelligence au prix de tout ce que tu possèdes4.7 Voir la parabole de Jésus en Mt 13.45-46..
8Tiens-la en haute estime4.8 Autre traduction : caresse-la ou étreins-la. La sagesse est alors comparée à l’épouse aimée (cf. 5.15-19)., et elle t’élèvera.
Si tu l’embrasses4.8 Le même verbe est utilisé à propos de l’attitude envers la femme adultère en 5.20. Le jeune homme est donc invité à choisir entre la sagesse et la femme adultère., elle te mettra en honneur.
9Elle posera une belle couronne sur ta tête,
elle t’ornera d’un diadème magnifique. »
10Mon fils, écoute-moi et reçois mes paroles,
ainsi tu prolongeras ta vie4.10 Voir 3.18..
11C’est la voie de la sagesse que je t’enseigne.
Je te guide vers de droits chemins.
12Si tu y marches, tes pas ne seront pas gênés,
et si tu y cours, tu ne trébucheras pas4.12 Soit sur un obstacle soit à cause de l’obscurité, ou des deux (voir v. 19 ; 3.23 ; 10.9 ; Ps 18.37 ; Es 40.30-31)..
13Tiens-toi fermement à l’éducation qui t’a été donnée, ne la rejette pas.
Restes-y attaché, car ta vie en dépend.
14Ne t’engage pas dans la voie des méchants,
ne suis pas l’exemple de ceux qui font le mal.
15Eloigne-toi de leur sentier,
ne t’y aventure pas,
écarte-toi d’eux et va ton chemin.
16Car ces gens-là ne dormiraient pas s’ils n’avaient pas fait quelque chose de mal,
ils perdraient le sommeil s’ils n’avaient causé la chute de quelqu’un.
17Ils se nourrissent du pain de la méchanceté
et boivent le vin de la violence.
18Le sentier des justes est comme la lumière de l’aurore
dont l’éclat ne cesse de croître jusqu’en plein jour.
19La route des méchants, elle, est plongée dans l’obscurité :
ils n’aperçoivent pas l’obstacle qui les fera tomber.
20Mon fils, sois attentif à mes paroles,
prête l’oreille à mes propos,
21ne les perds pas de vue.
Garde-les au fond de ton cœur,
22car ils apportent la vie à ceux qui les accueillent,
et ils assurent la santé du corps.
23Par-dessus tout, veille soigneusement sur ton cœur,
car il est à la source de tout ce qui fait ta vie.
24Garde-toi de prononcer des propos tordus :
rejette les discours pervers.
25Regarde bien en face de toi,
et que ton regard se porte droit devant toi.
26Observe bien le chemin sur lequel tu t’engages,
et emprunte des routes sûres.
27Ne t’en écarte ni à droite ni à gauche,
détourne ton pied du mal.
1Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding. 2For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law. 3For I was my father’s son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother. 4He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live. 5Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. 6Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee. 7Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. 8Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her. 9She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.4.9 a crown…: or, she shall compass thee with a crown of glory 10Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many. 11I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths. 12When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble. 13Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life.
14¶ Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. 15Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away. 16For they sleep not, except they have done mischief; and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall. 17For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence. 18But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day. 19The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.
20¶ My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. 21Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. 22For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.4.22 health: Heb. medicine
