Le premier recensement d’Israël
1Le premier jour du deuxième mois de la deuxième année après la sortie d’Egypte1.1 C’est-à-dire onze mois après l’arrivée des Israélites dans le désert du Sinaï (Ex 19.1), un mois après l’achèvement du tabernacle (Ex 40.17) et quinze jours après la célébration de la Pâque au Sinaï (9.1-5)., l’Eternel s’adressa à Moïse dans le désert du Sinaï dans la tente de la Rencontre. Il lui dit : 2Faites le recensement de toute la communauté des Israélites selon leurs familles et leurs groupes familiaux, en comptant tous les hommes 3âgés de vingt ans et plus, tous ceux qui sont aptes à servir dans l’armée d’Israël. Toi et Aaron, vous les dénombrerez par corps d’armée.
4Vous vous adjoindrez un homme par tribu ; vous prendrez celui qui se trouve à la tête de son groupe familial. 5Voici le nom des hommes qui vous assisteront1.5 Les tribus sont mentionnées dans l’ordre suivant : 1. les fils de Léa (sans Lévi, v. 47) ; 2. les fils de Rachel ; 3. les fils des servantes. Les noms de ces hommes reviennent aux chap. 2 ; 7 et 10. :
– pour Ruben : Elitsour, fils de Shedéour ;
– 6pour Siméon : Sheloumiel, fils de Tsourishaddaï ;
– 7pour Juda : Nahshôn, fils d’Amminadab ;
– 8pour Issacar : Netanéel, fils de Tsouar ;
– 9pour Zabulon : Eliab, fils de Hélôn ;
– 10pour les fils de Joseph :
pour Ephraïm : Elishama, fils d’Ammihoud ;
pour Manassé : Gamliel, fils de Pédahtsour ;
– 11pour Benjamin : Abidân, fils de Guideoni ;
– 12pour Dan : Ahiézer, fils d’Ammishaddaï ;
– 13pour Aser : Paguiel, fils d’Okrân ;
– 14pour Gad : Eliasaph, fils de Deouel1.14 L’ancienne version grecque et la version syriaque ont : Reouel (voir 2.14). ;
– 15pour Nephtali : Ahira, fils d’Enân.
16Tels sont les membres de la communauté qui furent convoqués. C’étaient les chefs de leurs tribus, ils étaient aussi à la tête des corps d’armée d’Israël. 17Moïse et Aaron s’adjoignirent ces hommes qui avaient été nommément désignés 18et convoquèrent toute l’assemblée, le premier jour du second mois ; les Israélites furent recensés, selon leurs familles et leurs groupes familiaux, on releva le nom des hommes de vingt ans et au-dessus, un par un, 19comme l’Eternel l’avait ordonné à Moïse. De cette manière, Moïse fit leur dénombrement au désert du Sinaï.
20On établit le recensement des descendants de Ruben, premier-né d’Israël, par familles et par groupes familiaux en relevant un par un le nom de tous les hommes de vingt ans et plus, aptes à servir dans l’armée. 21On en dénombra 46 5001.21 Tous les nombres sont arrondis à la centaine (sauf pour Gad, v. 25, dont le total est aussi arrondi dans certaines versions). Selon certains, les milliers que contiennent les divers nombres du recensement ne désigneraient pas mille individus mais des corps d’armées moins nombreux ou des chefs de troupe, conformément au sens que peut avoir le terme en hébreu (voir, p. ex., 31.14, 48). Une telle interprétation pose le problème du total des v. 45-46..

24On établit le recensement des descendants de Gad par familles et par groupes familiaux en relevant un par un le nom de tous les hommes de vingt ans et plus, aptes à servir dans l’armée. 25On en dénombra 45 650.
26On établit le recensement des descendants de Juda par familles et par groupes familiaux en relevant un par un le nom de tous les hommes de vingt ans et plus, aptes à servir dans l’armée. 27On en dénombra 74 600.
28On établit le recensement des descendants d’Issacar par familles et par groupes familiaux en relevant un par un le nom de tous les hommes de vingt ans et plus, aptes à servir dans l’armée. 29On en dénombra 54 400.
30On établit le recensement des descendants de Zabulon par familles et par groupes familiaux en relevant un par un le nom de tous les hommes de vingt ans et plus, aptes à servir dans l’armée. 31On en dénombra 57 400.
32Parmi les fils de Joseph1.32 Les descendants de Lévi étant exclus de ce recensement (v. 47), les descendants de Joseph sont groupés en deux tribus composées de la famille de ses deux fils, Ephraïm et Manassé. Le nombre de douze tribus est ainsi maintenu, et Joseph, qui devait recevoir le droit d’aînesse (1 Ch 5.2), a un héritage double. : on établit le recensement des descendants d’Ephraïm par familles et par groupes familiaux en relevant un par un le nom de tous les hommes de vingt ans et plus, aptes à servir dans l’armée. 33On en dénombra 40 500. 34On établit le recensement des descendants de Manassé par familles et par groupes familiaux en relevant un par un le nom de tous les hommes de vingt ans et plus, aptes à servir dans l’armée. 35On en dénombra 32 200.
36On établit le recensement des descendants de Benjamin par familles et par groupes familiaux en relevant un par un le nom de tous les hommes de vingt ans et plus, aptes à servir dans l’armée. 37On en dénombra 35 400.
38On établit le recensement des descendants de Dan par familles et par groupes familiaux en relevant un par un le nom de tous les hommes de vingt ans et plus, aptes à servir dans l’armée. 39On en dénombra 62 700.
40On établit le recensement des descendants d’Aser par familles et par groupes familiaux en relevant un par un le nom de tous les hommes de vingt ans et plus, aptes à servir dans l’armée. 41On en dénombra 41 500.
42On établit le recensement des descendants de Nephtali par familles et par groupes familiaux en relevant un par un le nom de tous les hommes de vingt ans et plus, aptes à servir dans l’armée. 43On en dénombra 53 400.
44Tels sont les effectifs que recensèrent Moïse et Aaron, assistés de douze chefs d’Israël, un par tribu. 45Le total des Israélites de vingt ans et plus, aptes à servir dans l’armée, dont on fit le recensement selon leurs groupes familiaux, 46était de 603 550.
47Les lévites, en tant que tribu patriarcale, ne furent pas recensés avec les autres tribus. 48En effet, l’Eternel avait dit à Moïse : 49N’inclus pas la tribu de Lévi dans le recensement et ne les compte pas avec les Israélites1.49 Ils seront recensés à part (3.14-39 ; 4.34-49).. 50Charge-les du service du tabernacle qui abrite l’acte de l’alliance1.50 C’est-à-dire les dix commandements gravés sur des tablettes de pierre (Ex 31.18 ; 32.15 ; 34.29) déposées dans le coffre (Ex 25.16, 21 ; 40.20)., de tous ses ustensiles et de tout son matériel ; ce sont eux qui transporteront le tabernacle avec tous ses accessoires et qui en assureront le service ; ils camperont autour du tabernacle. 51Quand il sera déplacé, les lévites le démonteront, puis ils le dresseront au nouveau campement. Tout membre étranger à leur tribu qui en approchera sera puni de mort. 52Les Israélites camperont chacun dans l’aire qui lui sera assignée, sous sa bannière, et selon leurs corps d’armée. 53Les lévites camperont autour du tabernacle qui abrite l’acte de l’alliance, pour que ma colère ne s’abatte pas sur la communauté des Israélites. Les lévites prendront soin du tabernacle.
54Les Israélites obéirent à tous les ordres que l’Eternel avait donnés à Moïse et les accomplirent.

17¶ And Moses and Aaron took these men which are expressed by their names: 18And they assembled all the congregation together on the first day of the second month, and they declared their pedigrees after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, by their polls. 19As the LORD commanded Moses, so he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai. 20And the children of Reuben, Israel’s eldest son, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 21Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Reuben, were forty and six thousand and five hundred.
22¶ Of the children of Simeon, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, those that were numbered of them, according to the number of the names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 23Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Simeon, were fifty and nine thousand and three hundred.
24¶ Of the children of Gad, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 25Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Gad, were forty and five thousand six hundred and fifty.
26¶ Of the children of Judah, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 27Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Judah, were threescore and fourteen thousand and six hundred.
28¶ Of the children of Issachar, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 29Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Issachar, were fifty and four thousand and four hundred.
30¶ Of the children of Zebulun, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 31Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Zebulun, were fifty and seven thousand and four hundred.
32¶ Of the children of Joseph, namely, of the children of Ephraim, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 33Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Ephraim, were forty thousand and five hundred.
34¶ Of the children of Manasseh, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 35Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Manasseh, were thirty and two thousand and two hundred.
36¶ Of the children of Benjamin, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 37Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Benjamin, were thirty and five thousand and four hundred.
38¶ Of the children of Dan, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 39Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Dan, were threescore and two thousand and seven hundred.
40¶ Of the children of Asher, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 41Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Asher, were forty and one thousand and five hundred.
42¶ Of the children of Naphtali, throughout their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 43Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Naphtali, were fifty and three thousand and four hundred.
44These are those that were numbered, which Moses and Aaron numbered, and the princes of Israel, being twelve men: each one was for the house of his fathers. 45So were all those that were numbered of the children of Israel, by the house of their fathers, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war in Israel; 46Even all they that were numbered were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.
47¶ But the Levites after the tribe of their fathers were not numbered among them. 48For the LORD had spoken unto Moses, saying, 49Only thou shalt not number the tribe of Levi, neither take the sum of them among the children of Israel: 50But thou shalt appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of testimony, and over all the vessels thereof, and over all things that belong to it: they shall bear the tabernacle, and all the vessels thereof; and they shall minister unto it, and shall encamp round about the tabernacle. 51And when the tabernacle setteth forward, the Levites shall take it down: and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up: and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death. 52And the children of Israel shall pitch their tents, every man by his own camp, and every man by his own standard, throughout their hosts. 53But the Levites shall pitch round about the tabernacle of testimony, that there be no wrath upon the congregation of the children of Israel: and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of testimony. 54And the children of Israel did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so did they.
