La tribu de Benjamin rétablie
1A Mitspa, les hommes avaient fait le serment qu’aucun d’entre eux ne donnerait sa fille en mariage à un Benjaminite. 2Le peuple vint à Béthel21.2 Voir 20.18, 26-27. et y resta assis jusqu’au soir devant Dieu. Ils se lamentèrent à haute voix et pleurèrent amèrement 3en disant : Pourquoi, ô Eternel, Dieu d’Israël, ce malheur est-il arrivé en Israël ? Pourquoi une tribu d’Israël manque-t-elle aujourd’hui ?
4Le lendemain, le peuple se leva de bonne heure et ils bâtirent là un autel. Ils y offrirent des holocaustes et des sacrifices de communion. 5Puis les Israélites se demandèrent les uns aux autres quel groupe, parmi toutes les tribus d’Israël, n’était pas venu à l’assemblée tenue devant l’Eternel. Car on s’était solennellement engagé par serment à mettre à mort quiconque ne viendrait pas à Mitspa devant l’Eternel. 6Les Israélites furent pris de pitié pour les Benjaminites, leurs frères. Ils disaient : Aujourd’hui, une tribu a été retranchée d’Israël. 7Que ferons-nous pour que les survivants d’entre eux aient des femmes ? Car nous avons juré par l’Eternel de ne pas leur donner nos filles en mariage.
8C’est pourquoi ils demandaient : Quel est parmi les tribus d’Israël le groupe qui n’est pas venu devant l’Eternel à Mitspa ?
Ils découvrirent que personne de Yabesh en Galaad21.8 Une des principales villes israélites, à l’est du Jourdain (voir 1 S 11 ; 31.11-13 ; 2 S 2.5-7 ; 21.12). n’était venu au camp et à l’assemblée.
9En effet, lorsqu’on fit le recensement du peuple, on ne trouva aucun habitant de Yabesh en Galaad. 10L’assemblée envoya contre eux douze mille soldats en leur donnant les ordres suivants : Allez massacrer tous les habitants de Yabesh en Galaad, y compris les femmes et les enfants. 11Voilà comment vous procéderez : Vous tuerez tout homme et toute femme qui a déjà vécu avec un homme.
12Ces soldats trouvèrent parmi les habitants de Yabesh en Galaad quatre cents jeunes filles vierges qui n’avaient pas été touchées par un homme. Ils les amenèrent au camp de Silo dans le pays de Canaan.
13Toute l’assemblée envoya des messagers auprès des Benjaminites réfugiés au rocher de Rimmôn pour faire la paix avec eux. 14Ceux-ci retournèrent aussitôt chez eux. On leur donna les filles qui avaient été épargnées à Yabesh en Galaad, mais il ne s’en trouva pas assez pour eux tous.
15Le peuple était pris de pitié pour Benjamin, parce que l’Eternel avait creusé un vide parmi les tribus d’Israël. 16Les responsables de l’assemblée dirent : Comment ferons-nous pour trouver des femmes à ceux qui restent encore, puisque celles de Benjamin ont été exterminées ? 17Ils ajoutèrent : Il faut assurer une descendance aux rescapés de Benjamin, afin qu’une tribu ne disparaisse pas d’Israël. 18Mais nous, nous ne pouvons pas leur donner nos filles en mariage, puisque nous avons juré : « Maudit soit celui qui donnera sa fille en mariage à un Benjaminite ! »
19Ils dirent alors qu’on allait bientôt célébrer comme chaque année la fête de l’Eternel à Silo, située au nord de Béthel, à l’est de la route de Béthel à Sichem, et au sud de Lebona. 20Alors ils ordonnèrent aux Benjaminites : Allez vous mettre en embuscade dans les vignes. 21Lorsque vous verrez les filles de Silo sortir de la ville pour danser leurs rondes, vous surgirez des vignes, chacun de vous enlèvera une fille et l’emmènera dans le pays de Benjamin pour en faire sa femme. 22Si leurs pères ou leurs frères viennent se plaindre à nous, nous leur répondrons : « Soyez compréhensifs envers eux, puisque nous n’avons pas pris une femme pour chacun d’eux lors de l’expédition contre Yabesh. D’ailleurs vous n’êtes pas coupables de parjure, puisque ce n’est pas vous qui les leur avez données. »
23Les Benjaminites suivirent ce conseil, ils prirent le nombre de femmes voulues parmi les jeunes filles qui dansaient. Ils les enlevèrent et partirent avec elles dans leur territoire. Ils rebâtirent leurs villes et s’y établirent. 24Les autres Israélites quittèrent ces lieux pour regagner leurs tribus et leurs familles ; de là, chacun rentra dans son territoire.
25En ces temps-là, il n’y avait pas de roi en Israël. Chacun faisait ce qu’il jugeait bon.
1Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpeh, saying, There shall not any of us give his daughter unto Benjamin to wife. 2And the people came to the house of God, and abode there till even before God, and lifted up their voices, and wept sore; 3And said, O LORD God of Israel, why is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be to day one tribe lacking in Israel? 4And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. 5And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the congregation unto the LORD? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up to the LORD to Mizpeh, saying, He shall surely be put to death. 6And the children of Israel repented them for Benjamin their brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day. 7How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing we have sworn by the LORD that we will not give them of our daughters to wives?
8¶ And they said, What one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up to Mizpeh to the LORD? And, behold, there came none to the camp from Jabesh-gilead to the assembly. 9For the people were numbered, and, behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead there. 10And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the valiantest, and commanded them, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the children. 11And this is the thing that ye shall do, Ye shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman that hath lain by man.21.11 hath lain…: Heb. knoweth the lying with man 12And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young virgins, that had known no man by lying with any male: and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.21.12 young…: Heb. young women virgins 13And the whole congregation sent some to speak to the children of Benjamin that were in the rock Rimmon, and to call peaceably unto them.21.13 to speak…: Heb. and spake and called21.13 call…: or, proclaim peace 14And Benjamin came again at that time; and they gave them wives which they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh-gilead: and yet so they sufficed them not. 15And the people repented them for Benjamin, because that the LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.
16¶ Then the elders of the congregation said, How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin? 17And they said, There must be an inheritance for them that be escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe be not destroyed out of Israel. 18Howbeit we may not give them wives of our daughters: for the children of Israel have sworn, saying, Cursed be he that giveth a wife to Benjamin. 19Then they said, Behold, there is a feast of the LORD in Shiloh yearly in a place which is on the north side of Beth-el, on the east side of the highway that goeth up from Beth-el to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.21.19 yearly: Heb. from year to year21.19 on the east…: or, toward the sunrising21.19 of the highway: or, on the highway 20Therefore they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards; 21And see, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin. 22And it shall be, when their fathers or their brethren come unto us to complain, that we will say unto them, Be favourable unto them for our sakes: because we reserved not to each man his wife in the war: for ye did not give unto them at this time, that ye should be guilty.21.22 Be favourable…: or, Gratify us in them 23And the children of Benjamin did so, and took them wives, according to their number, of them that danced, whom they caught: and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and repaired the cities, and dwelt in them. 24And the children of Israel departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance. 25In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
