Les villes de refuge pour les meurtriers involontaires
1L’Eternel parla à Josué et lui demanda 2de communiquer les instructions suivantes aux Israélites : Choisissez-vous les villes de refuge dont je vous ai parlé par l’intermédiaire de Moïse20.2 Voir Nb 35.9-34.. 3Celui qui aura tué quelqu’un involontairement, par inadvertance, pourra s’enfuir dans l’une de ces villes qui vous serviront ainsi de refuge contre l’homme chargé de punir le crime. 4L’homicide s’enfuira donc dans l’une de ces villes et s’arrêtera à l’entrée de la porte pour exposer son cas aux responsables de la ville. Ceux-ci l’admettront auprès d’eux dans la ville et lui attribueront un lieu, et il habitera là chez eux.
5Si l’homme chargé de punir le crime le poursuit, ils ne lui livreront pas le meurtrier, puisque c’est par inadvertance qu’il a tué la personne, sans avoir jamais éprouvé de haine pour elle. 6Il restera dans cette ville jusqu’à ce qu’il comparaisse devant l’assemblée pour être jugé, et jusqu’à la mort du grand-prêtre en fonction à cette époque-là. Après cela, il pourra retourner dans sa maison, dans sa ville d’origine, celle dont il s’était enfui.
7Les Israélites réservèrent à cet usage Qédesh en Galilée, dans la région montagneuse de Nephtali, Sichem dans les montagnes d’Ephraïm, Qiryath-Arba, c’est-à-dire Hébron, dans les montagnes de Juda. 8De l’autre côté du Jourdain, à l’est de Jéricho, ils désignèrent Bétser sur le plateau désertique de la tribu de Ruben, Ramoth en Galaad, une ville de la tribu de Gad, et Golân en Basan, ville de la tribu de Manassé. 9Ces villes furent désignées pour servir de refuge à tout Israélite et aux étrangers séjournant parmi eux ; quiconque aurait tué quelqu’un involontairement pourrait s’y enfuir pour ne pas être tué par l’homme chargé de punir le crime, avant qu’il comparaisse devant l’assemblée.
1The LORD also spake unto Joshua, saying, 2Speak to the children of Israel, saying, Appoint out for you cities of refuge, whereof I spake unto you by the hand of Moses: 3That the slayer that killeth any person unawares and unwittingly may flee thither: and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood. 4And when he that doth flee unto one of those cities shall stand at the entering of the gate of the city, and shall declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city, they shall take him into the city unto them, and give him a place, that he may dwell among them. 5And if the avenger of blood pursue after him, then they shall not deliver the slayer up into his hand; because he smote his neighbour unwittingly, and hated him not beforetime. 6And he shall dwell in that city, until he stand before the congregation for judgment, and until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days: then shall the slayer return, and come unto his own city, and unto his own house, unto the city from whence he fled.
7¶ And they appointed Kedesh in Galilee in mount Naphtali, and Shechem in mount Ephraim, and Kirjath-arba, which is Hebron, in the mountain of Judah.20.7 appointed: Heb. sanctified 8And on the other side Jordan by Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness upon the plain out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh. 9These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth among them, that whosoever killeth any person at unawares might flee thither, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stood before the congregation.
