Le territoire de la demi-tribu de Manassé (domaine occidental)
1Puis le tirage au sort attribua un patrimoine à la tribu de Manassé, fils premier-né de Joseph. Makir, le fils aîné de Manassé, le père de Galaad qui fut un homme de guerre, avait déjà reçu les régions de Galaad et du Basan. 2Les autres descendants de Manassé, c’est-à-dire ceux d’Abiézer, de Héleq, d’Asriel, de Sichem, de Hépher et de Shemida, les fils de Manassé, fils de Joseph, reçurent aussi une part pour leurs familles.
3Tselophhad, descendant de Manassé par Makir, Galaad et Hépher, n’eut pas de fils ; il n’eut que des filles qui s’appelaient : Mahla, Noa, Hogla, Milka et Tirtsa ; 4elles allèrent trouver le prêtre Eléazar, Josué, fils de Noun, et les responsables du peuple. Elles leur dirent : L’Eternel a ordonné à Moïse de nous donner un patrimoine comme aux hommes de notre tribu.
On leur attribua donc un patrimoine comme aux frères de leur père, conformément à l’ordre de l’Eternel. 5La tribu de Manassé reçut par conséquent dix parts – sans compter les régions de Galaad et du Basan situées à l’est du Jourdain. 6En effet, des descendantes de Manassé reçurent une propriété, tout comme les hommes de cette tribu, et le pays de Galaad appartint aux autres descendants de Manassé.
7Le territoire de Manassé s’étendait d’Aser à Mikmetath, en face de Sichem. Puis leur frontière descendait vers Yamîn chez les habitants d’Eyn-Tappouah. 8Le territoire de Tappouah appartenait à Manassé, mais la ville elle-même, située à la limite de Manassé, était aux descendants d’Ephraïm. 9Ensuite, la frontière descendait au torrent de Qana, qu’elle rejoignait sur la rive sud. Les villes de cette région, enclavées parmi celles de Manassé, étaient à Ephraïm. La frontière de Manassé passait au nord du torrent et débouchait sur la mer. 10Ainsi le territoire d’Ephraïm s’étendait vers le sud, celui de Manassé, vers le nord. La mer servait de frontière à l’ouest. Du côté nord, ils touchaient à Aser, du côté est à Issacar.
11Manassé reçut encore plusieurs villes dans les territoires d’Aser et d’Issacar : Beth-Sheân17.11 Une ville importante au sud du lac de Galilée conquise plus tard (voir 1 S 31.10 où elle est encore aux mains des alliés des Philistins). et les villes qui en dépendent, Yibleam et les villes qui en dépendent, ainsi que Dor, Eyn-Dor, Taanak, Meguiddo avec leurs habitants et les villes qui en dépendent, c’est-à-dire trois contrées. 12Cependant les gens de Manassé ne réussirent pas à déposséder les habitants de ces villes et les Cananéens se maintinrent dans le pays. 13Même lorsque les Israélites eurent accru leur puissance, ils leur imposèrent des corvées, mais ne les dépossédèrent pas.
Les descendants de Joseph veulent s’étendre
14Les descendants de Joseph17.14 C’est-à-dire les deux tribus d’Ephraïm et de Manassé. vinrent se plaindre à Josué en disant : Pourquoi nous as-tu attribué par le sort seulement une part du pays, alors que l’Eternel nous a tellement bénis jusqu’à présent que nous sommes devenus très nombreux ?
15Josué leur répondit : Si vous êtes tellement nombreux, et si la région montagneuse d’Ephraïm ne vous suffit pas, allez donc vous défricher du terrain dans les forêts appartenant aux Phéréziens et aux Rephaïm.
16Les fils de Joseph répliquèrent : Il est vrai que la région montagneuse ne nous suffit pas, mais tous les Cananéens qui habitent dans les plaines de Beth-Sheân et des villes voisines, ainsi que ceux de la vallée de Jizréel17.16 Vallée fertile de la Galilée appelée plus tard vallée d’Esdrelon., possèdent des chars bardés de fer pour combattre17.16 Chars de combat à deux roues, bardés de plaques de fer, donnant l’avantage dans les batailles en plaine..
17Alors Josué dit aux gens d’Ephraïm et de Manassé, descendants de Joseph : Vous êtes un peuple nombreux et fort, vous ne serez pas réduits à un lot unique. 18Vous posséderez toute la région montagneuse couverte de forêts, vous la défricherez et vous l’occuperez jusqu’à ses limites extrêmes. Vous en déposséderez les Cananéens malgré leurs chars bardés de fer et malgré leur puissance.

3¶ But Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, but daughters: and these are the names of his daughters, Mahlah, and Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. 4And they came near before Eleazar the priest, and before Joshua the son of Nun, and before the princes, saying, The LORD commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brethren. Therefore according to the commandment of the LORD he gave them an inheritance among the brethren of their father. 5And there fell ten portions to Manasseh, beside the land of Gilead and Bashan, which were on the other side Jordan; 6Because the daughters of Manasseh had an inheritance among his sons: and the rest of Manasseh’s sons had the land of Gilead.
7¶ And the coast of Manasseh was from Asher to Michmethah, that lieth before Shechem; and the border went along on the right hand unto the inhabitants of En-tappuah. 8Now Manasseh had the land of Tappuah: but Tappuah on the border of Manasseh belonged to the children of Ephraim; 9And the coast descended unto the river Kanah, southward of the river: these cities of Ephraim are among the cities of Manasseh: the coast of Manasseh also was on the north side of the river, and the outgoings of it were at the sea:17.9 river Kanah: or, brook of reeds 10Southward it was Ephraim’s, and northward it was Manasseh’s, and the sea is his border; and they met together in Asher on the north, and in Issachar on the east. 11And Manasseh had in Issachar and in Asher Beth-shean and her towns, and Ibleam and her towns, and the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, and the inhabitants of Endor and her towns, and the inhabitants of Taanach and her towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns, even three countries. 12Yet the children of Manasseh could not drive out the inhabitants of those cities; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land. 13Yet it came to pass, when the children of Israel were waxen strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute; but did not utterly drive them out.
14And the children of Joseph spake unto Joshua, saying, Why hast thou given me but one lot and one portion to inherit, seeing I am a great people, forasmuch as the LORD hath blessed me hitherto? 15And Joshua answered them, If thou be a great people, then get thee up to the wood country, and cut down for thyself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the giants, if mount Ephraim be too narrow for thee.17.15 giants: or, Rephaims 16And the children of Joseph said, The hill is not enough for us: and all the Canaanites that dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron, both they who are of Beth-shean and her towns, and they who are of the valley of Jezreel. 17And Joshua spake unto the house of Joseph, even to Ephraim and to Manasseh, saying, Thou art a great people, and hast great power: thou shalt not have one lot only: 18But the mountain shall be thine; for it is a wood, and thou shalt cut it down: and the outgoings of it shall be thine: for thou shalt drive out the Canaanites, though they have iron chariots, and though they be strong.
