La destruction du rouleau
1La quatrième année du règne de Yehoyaqim, fils de Josias, roi de Juda36.1 605 av. J.-C., l’Eternel adressa ce message à Jérémie : 2Prends un rouleau de parchemin. Tu y inscriras toutes les paroles que je t’ai dites au sujet d’Israël, de Juda et de tous les autres peuples, depuis le jour où j’ai commencé à te parler sous le règne de Josias, et jusqu’à ce jour. 3Lorsque les gens de Juda entendront tous les maux que j’ai décidé de leur infliger, peut-être chacun d’eux abandonnera-t-il sa conduite mauvaise, et alors je pardonnerai leurs fautes et leurs péchés.
4Alors Jérémie fit appel à Baruch36.4 Voir 32.12 et note., fils de Nériya, et Baruch écrivit, sous la dictée de Jérémie, sur un rouleau de parchemin, tout ce que l’Eternel lui avait dit. 5Puis Jérémie donna les instructions suivantes à Baruch : Je suis retenu et je me trouve dans l’impossibilité de me rendre au Temple. 6Va donc toi-même au temple de l’Eternel, un jour de jeûne36.6 Voir v. 9 et note., et lis, dans ce rouleau que tu as écrit sous ma dictée, les paroles de l’Eternel pour les faire entendre à tout le peuple ainsi qu’à tous les gens de Juda qui seront venus de leurs différentes villes. 7Peut-être se mettront-ils alors à supplier l’Eternel et chacun d’eux abandonnera-t-il sa conduite mauvaise, puisque l’Eternel a menacé ce peuple avec une grande colère et une forte indignation.
8Baruch, fils de Nériya, fit tout ce que le prophète Jérémie lui avait ordonné. Il lut au temple de l’Eternel les paroles de l’Eternel consignées dans le livre. 9Cela se passait la cinquième année du règne de Yehoyaqim, fils de Josias, roi de Juda, au neuvième mois36.9 C’est-à-dire en novembre-décembre 604 (on comptait les mois à partir du printemps), à la saison froide (v. 22). : on avait publié un jeûne36.9 Peut-être suite à l’invasion babylonienne de 605 av. J.-C. (voir Dn 1.1 et note). devant l’Eternel pour tout le peuple de Jérusalem et pour tous les gens des villes de Juda qui venaient à Jérusalem.
10Baruch lut dans le rouleau les paroles de Jérémie, dans le temple de l’Eternel, dans la salle de Guemaria36.10 Guemaria: voir 26.24 et note., fils de Shaphân, le secrétaire, dans le parvis supérieur, à l’entrée de la porte Neuve du Temple. Tout le peuple pouvait l’entendre.
11Michée, le fils de Guemaria, fils de Shaphân, entendit toutes les paroles de l’Eternel contenues dans le livre. 12Il se rendit au palais royal, entra dans le bureau du secrétaire où tous les ministres étaient en séance. Il y avait là Elishama, le secrétaire, Delaya, fils de Shemaya, Elnathan, fils d’Akbor, Guemaria, fils de Shaphân, Sédécias, fils de Hanania et tous les autres ministres. 13Michée leur rapporta toutes les paroles qu’il avait entendues de Baruch lorsque celui-ci avait lu au peuple ce qui était écrit dans le rouleau.
14Alors tous les ministres envoyèrent Yehoudi, fils de Netania, fils de Shélémia, fils de Koushi, à Baruch pour lui dire : Prends avec toi le rouleau que tu as lu au peuple, et viens ici.
Baruch, fils de Nériya, prit le rouleau et se rendit auprès d’eux. 15Ils lui dirent : Assieds-toi, s’il te plaît, et lis-nous cet écrit.
Baruch leur en fit donc lecture. 16Lorsqu’ils entendirent toutes ces paroles, ils se regardèrent l’un l’autre avec effroi et ils dirent à Baruch : Il faut absolument que nous rapportions toutes ces paroles au roi.
17Puis ils interrogèrent Baruch : Dis-nous donc comment tu as écrit toutes ces paroles. Etait-ce sous la dictée de Jérémie36.17 Les mots : sous la dictée de Jérémie ne figurent pas dans l’ancienne version grecque. ?
18Baruch leur répondit : Il m’a dicté personnellement toutes ces paroles et moi je les ai transcrites avec de l’encre sur ce rouleau.
19Alors les ministres dirent à Baruch : Va te cacher quelque part, de même que Jérémie. Que personne ne sache où vous êtes !
20Puis ils se rendirent auprès du roi dans la cour de son palais, en laissant le rouleau dans le bureau du secrétaire Elishama, et ils informèrent le roi de tout ce qui s’était passé. 21Celui-ci envoya Yehoudi chercher le rouleau. Quand Yehoudi l’eut pris dans le bureau du secrétaire Elishama, il le lut au roi et à tous les ministres qui se tenaient debout autour de lui.
22Cela se passait au neuvième mois ; le roi se trouvait dans son palais d’hiver et un brasero brûlait devant lui. 23Chaque fois que Yehoudi avait lu trois ou quatre colonnes du rouleau, le roi les coupait avec le canif du secrétaire et les jetait au feu dans le brasero, jusqu’à ce que tout le rouleau soit passé au feu dans le brasero.
24Mais ni le roi ni aucun de ses hauts fonctionnaires qui entendaient toutes ces paroles, ne furent alarmés, et aucun d’eux ne déchira ses vêtements en signe de consternation. 25Pourtant Elnathan, Delaya et Guemaria avaient prié le roi avec insistance de ne pas brûler le rouleau, mais il ne les avait pas écoutés. 26Au contraire, le roi ordonna à Yerahméel, prince de sang36.26 Autre traduction : officier royal ou haut fonctionnaire du roi (voir de même en 38.6)., à Seraya, fils d’Azriel, et à Shélémia, fils d’Abdéel, d’arrêter Baruch le secrétaire et le prophète Jérémie ; mais l’Eternel les tint cachés.
27Après que le roi eut brûlé le rouleau contenant les paroles que Baruch avait écrites sous la dictée de Jérémie, l’Eternel adressa la parole à Jérémie en ces termes : 28Prends un autre rouleau sur lequel tu écriras toutes les paroles qui figuraient sur le premier rouleau que Yehoyaqim, roi de Juda a brûlé. 29Tu diras à Yehoyaqim, roi de Juda : Voici ce que déclare l’Eternel : Tu as brûlé ce rouleau en demandant : « Pourquoi y as-tu écrit que le roi de Babylone viendra détruire ce pays et en faire disparaître hommes et bêtes ? »
30C’est pourquoi voici ce que l’Eternel déclare au sujet de Yehoyaqim, roi de Juda : Aucun de ses descendants ne lui succédera sur le trône de David36.30 Son fils Yehoyakîn ne régna que trois mois (2 R 24.8), puis il fut déporté à Babylone (2 R 24.15) où il mourut probablement (voir 52.33-34).. Son cadavre sera jeté dehors et exposé à la chaleur du jour et au froid de la nuit. 31Je le punirai, lui, ses descendants et tous ses hauts fonctionnaires pour leurs crimes, et je ferai venir sur eux, sur les habitants de Jérusalem et sur les gens de Juda, tous les malheurs que je leur ai annoncés et dont ils ont refusé d’entendre parler.
32Alors Jérémie prit un autre rouleau et le donna au secrétaire Baruch, fils de Nériya. Celui-ci y écrivit, sous la dictée de Jérémie, toutes les paroles contenues dans le rouleau que Yehoyaqim, roi de Juda, avait brûlé. Il y ajouta encore beaucoup d’autres paroles semblables.
Jehoiakim burns Jeremiah’s scroll
1In the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2‘Take a scroll and write on it all the words I have spoken to you concerning Israel, Judah and all the other nations from the time I began speaking to you in the reign of Josiah till now. 3Perhaps when the people of Judah hear about every disaster I plan to inflict on them, they will each turn from their wicked ways; then I will forgive their wickedness and their sin.’
4So Jeremiah called Baruch son of Neriah, and while Jeremiah dictated all the words the Lord had spoken to him, Baruch wrote them on the scroll. 5Then Jeremiah told Baruch, ‘I am restricted; I am not allowed to go to the Lord’s temple. 6So you go to the house of the Lord on a day of fasting and read to the people from the scroll the words of the Lord that you wrote as I dictated. Read them to all the people of Judah who come in from their towns. 7Perhaps they will bring their petition before the Lord and will each turn from their wicked ways, for the anger and wrath pronounced against this people by the Lord are great.’
8Baruch son of Neriah did everything Jeremiah the prophet told him to do; at the Lord’s temple he read the words of the Lord from the scroll. 9In the ninth month of the fifth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, a time of fasting before the Lord was proclaimed for all the people in Jerusalem and those who had come from the towns of Judah. 10From the room of Gemariah son of Shaphan the secretary, which was in the upper courtyard at the entrance of the New Gate of the temple, Baruch read to all the people at the Lord’s temple the words of Jeremiah from the scroll.
11When Micaiah son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, heard all the words of the Lord from the scroll, 12he went down to the secretary’s room in the royal palace, where all the officials were sitting: Elishama the secretary, Delaiah son of Shemaiah, Elnathan son of Akbor, Gemariah son of Shaphan, Zedekiah son of Hananiah, and all the other officials. 13After Micaiah told them everything he had heard Baruch read to the people from the scroll, 14all the officials sent Jehudi son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, to say to Baruch, ‘Bring the scroll from which you have read to the people and come.’ So Baruch son of Neriah went to them with the scroll in his hand. 15They said to him, ‘Sit down, please, and read it to us.’
So Baruch read it to them. 16When they heard all these words, they looked at each other in fear and said to Baruch, ‘We must report all these words to the king.’ 17Then they asked Baruch, ‘Tell us, how did you come to write all this? Did Jeremiah dictate it?’
18‘Yes,’ Baruch replied, ‘he dictated all these words to me, and I wrote them in ink on the scroll.’
19Then the officials said to Baruch, ‘You and Jeremiah, go and hide. Don’t let anyone know where you are.’
20After they put the scroll in the room of Elishama the secretary, they went to the king in the courtyard and reported everything to him. 21The king sent Jehudi to get the scroll, and Jehudi brought it from the room of Elishama the secretary and read it to the king and all the officials standing beside him. 22It was the ninth month and the king was sitting in the winter apartment, with a fire burning in the brazier in front of him. 23Whenever Jehudi had read three or four columns of the scroll, the king cut them off with a scribe’s knife and threw them into the brazier, until the entire scroll was burned in the fire. 24The king and all his attendants who heard all these words showed no fear, nor did they tear their clothes. 25Even though Elnathan, Delaiah and Gemariah urged the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them. 26Instead, the king commanded Jerahmeel, a son of the king, Seraiah son of Azriel and Shelemiah son of Abdeel to arrest Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet. But the Lord had hidden them.
27After the king burned the scroll containing the words that Baruch had written at Jeremiah’s dictation, the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 28‘Take another scroll and write on it all the words that were on the first scroll, which Jehoiakim king of Judah burned up. 29Also tell Jehoiakim king of Judah, “This is what the Lord says: you burned that scroll and said, ‘Why did you write on it that the king of Babylon would certainly come and destroy this land and wipe from it both man and beast?’ 30Therefore this is what the Lord says about Jehoiakim king of Judah: he will have no-one to sit on the throne of David; his body will be thrown out and exposed to the heat by day and the frost by night. 31I will punish him and his children and his attendants for their wickedness; I will bring on them and those living in Jerusalem and the people of Judah every disaster I pronounced against them, because they have not listened.” ’
32So Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to the scribe Baruch son of Neriah, and as Jeremiah dictated, Baruch wrote on it all the words of the scroll that Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire. And many similar words were added to them.
