Abram délivre Loth des ennemis de Sodome
1Il arriva au temps d’Amraphel, roi de Shinéar, d’Aryok, roi d’Ellasar, de Kedorlaomer, roi d’Elam, et de Tideal, roi de Goyim, 2que ces quatre rois firent la guerre à Béra, roi de Sodome, à Birsha, roi de Gomorrhe, à Shineab, roi d’Adma, à Shéméber, roi de Tseboïm et au roi de Béla, c’est-à-dire Tsoar. 3Ces derniers rassemblèrent leurs troupes dans la vallée de Siddim, près de la mer Morte. 4Pendant douze ans, ils avaient été assujettis à Kedorlaomer, mais la treizième année, ils se révoltèrent.
5La quatorzième année, Kedorlaomer se mit en campagne avec les rois qui lui étaient alliés et ils battirent les Rephaïm14.5 Peuple habitant primitivement ce qui deviendra le pays d’Israël. Leur nom signifie : « géants ». à Ashteroth-Qarnaïm, puis les Zouzim à Ham, et les Emim à Shavé-Qiryataïm. 6Ils défirent les Horiens dans leur montagne de Séir, et les poursuivirent jusqu’au chêne de Parân, aux confins du désert. 7En revenant sur leurs pas, ils arrivèrent à Eyn-Mishpath – c’est-à-dire Qadesh – , ravagèrent tout le pays des Amalécites et battirent les Amoréens qui habitaient Hatsatsôn-Tamar. 8C’est alors que les rois de Sodome, de Gomorrhe, d’Adma, de Tseboïm et de Béla, c’est-à-dire Tsoar, s’avancèrent et se mirent en position de combat dans la vallée de Siddim 9en face de Kedorlaomer, roi d’Elam, Tideal, roi de Goyim, Amraphel, roi de Shinéar et Aryok, roi d’Ellasar. Ils étaient quatre rois contre cinq. 10Les rois de Sodome et de Gomorrhe prirent la fuite. Or, il y avait dans la vallée de Siddim beaucoup de puits de bitume, et des fuyards y tombèrent ; les rescapés s’enfuirent dans la montagne. 11Les vainqueurs s’emparèrent de tous les biens de Sodome et de Gomorrhe, ils prirent toutes leurs réserves de vivres et s’en allèrent. 12Ils enlevèrent aussi Loth le neveu d’Abram, avec ses biens, car il demeurait à Sodome.
13Un rescapé vint annoncer la nouvelle à Abram l’Hébreu qui demeurait près des chênes de Mamré l’Amoréen, un frère d’Eshkol et d’Aner ; ils étaient tous trois des alliés d’Abram. 14Quand Abram apprit que son parent avait été emmené captif, il arma trois cent dix-huit hommes bien entraînés, nés dans sa maison, et poursuivit les quatre rois jusqu’à Dan. 15Il divisa sa troupe et attaqua les ennemis pendant la nuit avec ses serviteurs, il les battit et les poursuivit jusqu’à Hoba au nord de Damas. 16Il récupéra tout le butin, il ramena aussi Loth son parent, ainsi que ses biens, les femmes et les autres prisonniers.
Melchisédek bénit Abram
17Lorsque Abram revint après avoir battu Kedorlaomer et les rois qui étaient avec lui, le roi de Sodome vint à sa rencontre dans la vallée de Shavé qui est la vallée royale. 18Melchisédek14.18 Voir Ps 110.4 ; Hé 7.1-10. Salem est probablement l’ancien nom de Jérusalem (voir Ps 110.4 ; Hé 7.1-10)., roi de Salem, qui était prêtre du Dieu très-haut, apporta du pain et du vin. 19Il bénit Abram en ces termes :
Béni soit Abram
par le Dieu très-haut
qui a formé le ciel et la terre ;
20béni soit aussi le Dieu très-haut
qui t’a donné la victoire ╵sur tes ennemis !
Et Abram lui donna le dixième de tout le butin.
21Le roi de Sodome dit alors à Abram : Rends-moi les personnes et garde les biens pour toi.
22Abram lui répondit : Je jure à main levée vers l’Eternel, le Dieu très-haut qui a formé le ciel et la terre, 23que je ne prendrai rien de ce qui t’appartient, pas même un fil ou une courroie de soulier, pour que tu ne puisses pas dire : « J’ai enrichi Abram. » 24Je ne veux rien si ce n’est ce qu’ont mangé les jeunes gens. De plus, la part des hommes qui m’ont accompagné, Aner, Eshkol et Mamré, eux, ils la prendront.
Abram Saves Lot
1Amraphel was the king of Babylon. Arioch was the king of Ellasar. Kedorlaomer was the king of Elam. And Tidal was the king of Goyim. 2They went to war against five other kings. They were Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboyim, and the king of Bela. Bela was also called Zoar. 3These five kings all gathered their armies together in the Valley of Siddim. It was also called the valley of the Dead Sea. 4For 12 years Kedorlaomer had ruled over them. But in the 13th year they opposed him.
5So in the 14th year, Kedorlaomer and the kings who helped him went to war. They won the battle against the Rephaites in Ashteroth Karnaim. They also won the battle against the Zuzites in Ham and the Emites in Shaveh Kiriathaim. 6They did the same thing to the Horites in the hill country of Seir. They marched all the way to El Paran near the desert. 7Then they turned back and went to En Mishpat. En Mishpat was also called Kadesh. They took over the whole territory of the Amalekites. They also won the battle against the Amorites who were living in Hazezon Tamar.
8Then the kings of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboyim and Bela marched out. Bela was also called Zoar. They lined up their armies for battle in the Valley of Siddim. 9They got ready to fight against Kedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goyim, Amraphel king of Babylonia, and Arioch king of Ellasar. There were four kings against five. 10The Valley of Siddim was full of tar pits. The kings of Sodom and Gomorrah ran away from the battle. Some of their men fell into the pits, but the rest escaped to the hills. 11The four kings took all the things that belonged to Sodom and Gomorrah. They also took all their food and then left. 12They carried away Abram’s nephew Lot and the things he owned. Lot was living in Sodom at that time.
13A man escaped and came to report everything to Abram. Abram was a Hebrew. He was living near the large trees of Mamre the Amorite. Mamre was a brother of Eshkol and Aner. All of them helped Abram. 14Abram heard that Lot had been captured. So he called out his 318 trained men. All of them were sons of his servants. Abram and his men chased their enemies as far as Dan. 15During the night Abram separated his men into groups. They attacked their enemies and drove them away. They chased them north of Damascus as far as Hobah. 16Abram took back everything the kings had taken. He brought back his nephew Lot and the things Lot owned. He also brought back the women and the other people.
17After Abram won the battle over Kedorlaomer and the kings who helped him, he returned home. The king of Sodom came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh. It was also called the King’s Valley.
18Melchizedek was the king of Jerusalem. He brought out bread and wine. He was the priest of the Most High God. 19He gave a blessing to Abram. He said,
“May the Most High God bless Abram.
May the Creator of heaven and earth bless him.
20Give praise to the Most High God.
He gave your enemies into your hand.”
Then Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of everything.
21The king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people. Keep everything else for yourself.”
22But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have raised my hand to make a promise to the Lord. He is the Most High God. He is the Creator of heaven and earth. 23I’ve said I will not accept anything that belongs to you. I will not take even a thread or the strap of a sandal. You will never be able to say, ‘I made Abram rich.’ 24I’ll accept only what my men have eaten and what belongs to Aner, Eshkol and Mamre. These three men went with me. Let them have their share.”
