La complainte sur le pharaon
1Le premier jour du douzième mois de la douzième année32.1 C’est-à-dire en mars 585 av. J.-C., l’Eternel m’adressa la parole en ces termes :
2Fils d’homme,
prononce une complainte ╵sur le pharaon, roi d’Egypte,
dis-lui :
« Tu ressemblais ╵à un jeune lion ╵parmi les peuples.
Tu ressemblais, jadis, ╵au crocodile dans les flots,
tu te soulevais dans tes fleuves,
et, de tes pattes, ╵tu en troublais les eaux,
tu salissais tous leurs canaux32.2 C’est-à-dire les canaux d’irrigation et les bras du Nil qui parcouraient toute l’Egypte..
3Voici ce que déclare ╵le Seigneur, l’Eternel :
J’étendrai sur toi mon filet
lors d’un rassemblement ╵d’un grand nombre de peuples,
et ils te tireront dehors ╵avec ma nasse.
4Je t’abandonnerai par terre
et je te jetterai ╵par terre dans les champs.
Je ferai se poser sur toi ╵tous les oiseaux,
je te donnerai en pâture ╵à toutes les bêtes sauvages,
5j’exposerai ton corps ╵sur les montagnes
et je remplirai les vallées des restes ╵de ta dépouille.
6J’abreuverai ╵le pays de ton sang
jusqu’aux montagnes
et il remplira les lits des torrents.
7Lorsque tu t’éteindras, ╵je voilerai le ciel,
j’obscurcirai ses astres
et je recouvrirai ╵le soleil de nuages,
la lune cessera ╵de donner sa clarté.
8J’obscurcirai
à cause de toi tous les astres ╵qui luisent dans le ciel,
et j’envelopperai ╵ton pays de ténèbres.
C’est là ce que déclare ╵le Seigneur, l’Eternel.
9J’affligerai le cœur d’un grand nombre de peuples car je ferai subir les répercussions de ta ruine à diverses nations, à travers des pays que tu ne connais pas. 10Je plongerai beaucoup de peuples dans la consternation à ton sujet et, à cause de toi, leurs rois seront pris d’épouvante lorsque je brandirai mon épée devant eux et, au jour de ta chute, chacun d’eux, sans arrêt, tremblera pour sa vie.
11Car voici ce que dit ╵le Seigneur, l’Eternel :
L’épée du roi de Babylone t’atteindra
12et je ferai tomber ╵la multitude de ton peuple ╵sous l’épée des guerriers
du plus brutal des peuples :
ils viendront ravager ╵ce qui fait l’orgueil de l’Egypte,
et tous ses habitants ╵seront exterminés.
13Et je ferai périr ╵tout son bétail
du bord des eaux profondes.
Elles ne seront plus troublées ╵ni par le pied de l’homme,
ni par le sabot des bestiaux.
14Je rendrai leurs eaux calmes
et je ferai couler ╵leurs fleuves comme l’huile.
C’est là ce que déclare ╵le Seigneur, l’Eternel.
15Lorsque j’aurai réduit l’Egypte ╵à une terre dévastée,
quand le pays sera vidé ╵de tout ce qu’il contient,
lorsque j’aurai frappé ╵tous ceux qui y habitent,
à ce moment-là, on reconnaîtra ╵que je suis l’Eternel. »
16Voilà la complainte que l’on chantera ; ce sont les filles des autres peuples qui la chanteront ; elles la chanteront sur l’Egypte et sur toute sa nombreuse population, le Seigneur, l’Eternel, le déclare.
Le pharaon aux enfers
17La douzième année, le quinzième jour du mois32.17 Sans doute du douzième mois comme au v. 1., l’Eternel m’adressa la parole en ces termes :
18Fils d’homme, entonne un chant funèbre sur la population nombreuse de l’Egypte, fais-la descendre, elle et les peuples des puissantes nations, dans le séjour des morts, avec ceux qui descendent dans la fosse.
19Qui surpasses-tu en beauté ?
Descends et couche-toi ╵à côté des incirconcis !
20Voici qu’ils tomberont ╵au milieu des victimes ╵transpercées par l’épée.
L’épée est déjà prête.
Qu’on emporte l’Egypte ╵avec ses multitudes.
21Les plus vaillants héros,
avec ceux qui, jadis, ╵lui donnaient leur soutien,
lui diront, ce jour-là,
dans le séjour des morts :
« Les voilà descendus ╵et les voilà couchés
eux, ces incirconcis ╵transpercés par l’épée ! »
22Car là est couchée l’Assyrie ╵et toute sa population,
ses tombes sont tout autour d’elle,
tous sont tombés
blessés à mort ╵sous les coups de l’épée.
23Ses tombes, on les a mises
tout au fond de la fosse
et sa population ╵est assemblée ╵autour de son tombeau.
Tous sont tombés,
blessés à mort ╵sous les coups de l’épée,
eux qui répandaient la terreur ╵dedans le monde des vivants.
24Là est couché Elam32.24 Elam: à l’est de la Babylonie sur le versant de la chaîne bordant la Mésopotamie. ╵et toute sa population,
ses tombes sont tout autour d’elle.
Tous sont tombés
blessés à mort ╵sous les coups de l’épée.
Les voilà descendus, ╵peuple d’incirconcis,
au séjour souterrain,
eux qui répandaient la terreur ╵dedans le monde des vivants,
et ils portent sur eux ╵leur déshonneur
avec tous ceux ╵qui sont descendus dans la fosse.
25On a placé sa couche
au milieu de tous ceux ╵qui ont été tués,
et avec toute sa population ; ╵ses tombes sont tout autour d’elle.
Tous ces incirconcis ╵ont péri par l’épée,
eux qui répandaient la terreur ╵dedans le monde des vivants.
Et ils portent sur eux ╵leur déshonneur
avec tous ceux ╵qui sont descendus dans la fosse.
Ils ont leur place ╵parmi les victimes.
26Là sont Méshek, Toubal32.26 Peuples du Nord, peuplant l’Asie Mineure (voir 27.13). ╵et toute leur population,
leurs tombes sont tout autour d’eux.
Tous ces incirconcis ╵ont péri par l’épée,
eux qui répandaient la terreur ╵dedans le monde des vivants.
27Ils ne reposent pas ╵à côté des guerriers,
ceux des incirconcis ╵qui sont tombés ╵sur le champ de bataille
et qui sont descendus ╵dans le séjour des morts
revêtus de l’armure,
sous la tête desquels ╵on a mis leur épée.
Mais le poids de leurs crimes ╵repose sur leurs os,
car ces guerriers répandaient la terreur ╵dedans le monde des vivants.
28Toi aussi, pharaon, ╵te voilà abattu ╵au milieu des incirconcis.
Oui, te voilà couché ╵avec ceux qui ont péri par l’épée.
29Là sont Edom32.29 Edom: peuple issu d’Esaü installé sur « la montagne de Séir » (Gn 32.4) au sud de Moab près de la mer Morte., ses rois et tous ses princes qui, malgré leur vaillance, se trouvent avec ceux que l’épée a tués. Eux aussi sont couchés à côté des incirconcis et de tous ceux qui sont descendus dans la fosse. 30Là sont couchés aussi tous les seigneurs du septentrion, et tous les Sidoniens32.30 Les seigneurs du septentrion désignent sans doute les chefs phéniciens de Tyr et de Sidon., ils sont descendus là, au milieu des tués. Malgré la terreur qu’inspirait leur vaillance, ils sont couverts de honte. Ils sont couchés, ces incirconcis, avec ceux que l’épée a fait périr et ils portent sur eux leur déshonneur, avec tous ceux qui sont descendus dans la fosse. 31En les voyant, le pharaon pourra se consoler du sort de son peuple nombreux. Le pharaon et son armée périront par l’épée. C’est là ce que déclare le Seigneur, l’Eternel. 32Car pour ma part, je répandrai la terreur dans le monde des vivants, et on le fera coucher au milieu des incirconcis avec ceux que l’épée a fait périr, oui, lui, le pharaon et tout son nombreux peuple. C’est là ce que déclare le Seigneur, l’Eternel.
A lament over Pharaoh
1In the twelfth year, in the twelfth month on the first day, the word of the Lord came to me: 2‘Son of man, take up a lament concerning Pharaoh king of Egypt and say to him:
‘ “You are like a lion among the nations;
you are like a monster in the seas
thrashing about in your streams,
churning the water with your feet
and muddying the streams.
3‘ “This is what the Sovereign Lord says:
‘ “With a great throng of people
I will cast my net over you,
and they will haul you up in my net.
4I will throw you on the land
and hurl you on the open field.
I will let all the birds of the sky settle on you
and all the wild animals gorge themselves on you.
5I will spread your flesh on the mountains
and fill the valleys with your remains.
6I will drench the land with your flowing blood
all the way to the mountains,
and the ravines will be filled with your flesh.
7When I snuff you out, I will cover the heavens
and darken their stars;
I will cover the sun with a cloud,
and the moon will not give its light.
8All the shining lights in the heavens
I will darken over you;
I will bring darkness over your land, declares the Sovereign Lord.
9I will trouble the hearts of many peoples
when I bring about your destruction among the nations,
among32:9 Hebrew; Septuagint bring you into captivity among the nations, / to lands you have not known.
10I will cause many peoples to be appalled at you,
and their kings will shudder with horror because of you
when I brandish my sword before them.
On the day of your downfall
each of them will tremble
every moment for his life.
11‘ “For this is what the Sovereign Lord says:
‘ “The sword of the king of Babylon
will come against you.
12I will cause your hordes to fall
by the swords of mighty men –
the most ruthless of all nations.
They will shatter the pride of Egypt,
and all her hordes will be overthrown.
13I will destroy all her cattle
from beside abundant waters
no longer to be stirred by the foot of man
or muddied by the hooves of cattle.
14Then I will let her waters settle
and make her streams flow like oil,
declares the Sovereign Lord.
15When I make Egypt desolate
and strip the land of everything in it,
when I strike down all who live there,
then they will know that I am the Lord.”
16‘This is the lament they will chant for her. The daughters of the nations will chant it; for Egypt and all her hordes they will chant it, declares the Sovereign Lord.’
Egypt’s descent into the realm of the dead
17In the twelfth year, on the fifteenth day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: 18‘Son of man, wail for the hordes of Egypt and consign to the earth below both her and the daughters of mighty nations, along with those who go down to the pit. 19Say to them, “Are you more favoured than others? Go down and be laid among the uncircumcised.” 20They will fall among those killed by the sword. The sword is drawn; let her be dragged off with all her hordes. 21From within the realm of the dead the mighty leaders will say of Egypt and her allies, “They have come down and they lie with the uncircumcised, with those killed by the sword.”
22‘Assyria is there with her whole army; she is surrounded by the graves of all her slain, all who have fallen by the sword. 23Their graves are in the depths of the pit and her army lies around her grave. All who had spread terror in the land of the living are slain, fallen by the sword.
24‘Elam is there, with all her hordes around her grave. All of them are slain, fallen by the sword. All who had spread terror in the land of the living went down uncircumcised to the earth below. They bear their shame with those who go down to the pit. 25A bed is made for her among the slain, with all her hordes around her grave. All of them are uncircumcised, killed by the sword. Because their terror had spread in the land of the living, they bear their shame with those who go down to the pit; they are laid among the slain.
26‘Meshek and Tubal are there, with all their hordes around their graves. All of them are uncircumcised, killed by the sword because they spread their terror in the land of the living. 27But they do not lie with the fallen warriors of old,32:27 Septuagint; Hebrew warriors who were uncircumcised who went down to the realm of the dead with their weapons of war – their swords placed under their heads and their shields32:27 Probable reading of the original Hebrew text; Masoretic Text punishment resting on their bones – though these warriors also had terrorised the land of the living.
28‘You too, Pharaoh, will be broken and will lie among the uncircumcised, with those killed by the sword.
29‘Edom is there, her kings and all her princes; despite their power, they are laid with those killed by the sword. They lie with the uncircumcised, with those who go down to the pit.
30‘All the princes of the north and all the Sidonians are there; they went down with the slain in disgrace despite the terror caused by their power. They lie uncircumcised with those killed by the sword and bear their shame with those who go down to the pit.
31‘Pharaoh – he and all his army – will see them and he will be consoled for all his hordes that were killed by the sword, declares the Sovereign Lord. 32Although I allowed him to spread terror in the land of the living, Pharaoh and all his hordes will be laid among the uncircumcised, with those killed by the sword, declares the Sovereign Lord.’
