La vocation d’Ezéchiel
1Le cinquième jour du quatrième mois de la trentième année1.1 Probablement le quatrième mois de la trentième année de la vie d’Ezéchiel, l’âge auquel il aurait dû commencer à exercer ses fonctions sacerdotales (Nb 4.3)., je me trouvais parmi les déportés, près du canal du Kebar1.1 Le Kebar: grand canal relié à l’Euphrate, au sud de Babylone.. Le ciel s’ouvrit et Dieu m’envoya des visions.
2Le cinquième jour du mois de cette année-là, c’est-à-dire la cinquième année de la captivité du roi Yehoyakîn1.2 C’est-à-dire juillet 593 av. J.-C. Sur la captivité de Yehoyakîn, voir 2 R 24.8-17 ; 2 Ch 36.9-10., 3l’Eternel adressa la parole à Ezéchiel, fils du prêtre Bouzi, au pays des Chaldéens, près du canal du Kebar. Là, la main de l’Eternel reposa sur lui.
Ezéchiel contemple la gloire de Dieu
4Je vis soudain un vent de tempête venant du nord qui poussait devant lui un énorme nuage sillonné d’éclairs. Ce nuage était entouré d’une clarté éblouissante. En son centre, il y avait l’éclat d’un métal au milieu du feu1.4 Pour les v. 4-28, voir 10.1-22 ; cf. Ap 4.. 5En son milieu, je distinguais quelque chose qui ressemblait à quatre êtres vivants ; par leur aspect, ils ressemblaient à des hommes1.5 Selon 10.15, ces êtres vivants sont des chérubins (voir Ex 25.17 et note).. 6Chacun d’eux avait quatre faces et quatre ailes. 7Leurs jambes étaient droites ; leurs pieds étaient comme ceux d’un taureau et brillaient comme du bronze poli. 8Sous leurs ailes, et à leurs quatre côtés, apparaissaient des mains humaines, et chacun des quatre avait ses faces et ses ailes. 9Leurs ailes se touchaient l’une l’autre par leurs extrémités. Quand ils se déplaçaient, ils ne se tournaient pas, mais chacun avançait droit devant soi. 10Leurs faces ressemblaient à celle d’un homme, et ils avaient tous les quatre une face de lion à droite, une face de taureau à gauche, et une face d’aigle. 11Chacun d’eux avait deux paires d’ailes : deux de ces ailes se déployaient vers le haut et chacune touchait une aile d’un autre être vivant de son côté, les deux autres couvraient leurs corps. 12Chacun d’eux avançait droit devant soi, ils allaient là où l’Esprit1.12 En hébreu, il y a un jeu sur les deux sens possibles du terme : vent et Esprit. les poussait à aller sans qu’aucun d’eux ne se tourne pour se déplacer.
13Ces êtres vivants avaient l’aspect de braises1.13 Selon le texte hébreu traditionnel. L’ancienne version grecque a : au milieu de ces êtres vivants, il y avait des braises… incandescentes, et de torches brillantes : ils paraissaient embrasés comme des torches brillantes. Le feu courait entre ces êtres vivants ; ils avaient l’éclat du feu et des éclairs jaillissaient de ce feu. 14Ces êtres couraient, allant et venant en tous sens, comme des éclairs.
15En contemplant ces êtres vivants, j’aperçus à côté de chacun d’eux une roue qui touchait terre, vers leurs quatre faces. 16Les quatre roues étaient pareilles : elles semblaient faites en chrysolithe1.16 Pierre précieuse importée d’Espagne. et paraissaient encastrées l’une au milieu de l’autre. 17Elles pouvaient donc se déplacer dans les quatre directions sans pivoter. 18Les jantes des quatre roues étaient d’une dimension énorme et terrifiante. Elles étaient couvertes d’yeux sur toute leur circonférence. 19Quand les êtres vivants se déplaçaient, les roues se déplaçaient à côté d’eux, et quand ils s’élevaient de terre, elles s’élevaient aussi. 20Ils allaient là où l’Esprit1.20 Voir 1.12 et note. les poussait à aller. Les roues s’élevaient en même temps qu’eux, car l’Esprit qui animait les êtres vivants animait aussi les roues. 21Quand les êtres vivants s’avançaient, se tenaient arrêtés ou s’élevaient de terre, les roues s’avançaient, se tenaient arrêtées ou s’élevaient de terre en même temps qu’eux, car l’Esprit qui animait les êtres vivants animait aussi les roues.
22Au-dessus de la tête de ces êtres vivants s’étendait quelque chose qui ressemblait à une étendue céleste et qui avait l’éclat éblouissant du cristal. 23Sous cette étendue, ils tendaient leurs ailes jusqu’à toucher celles de leurs voisins, et chacun en avait deux qui lui couvraient le corps. 24Quand ils se déplaçaient, j’entendais le bruit de leurs ailes, un bruit semblable au grondement de grosses eaux ou à la voix du Tout-Puissant, c’était un bruit de grand tumulte comme celui d’un campement guerrier. Quand ils s’arrêtaient, ils abaissaient leurs ailes. 25Alors une voix retentit au-dessus de l’étendue céleste qui surplombait leur tête. 26Par-dessus cette étendue apparaissait comme une pierre de saphir qui avait la forme d’un trône, et au-dessus de ce qui ressemblait à un trône, au point le plus élevé, se tenait un être ayant l’aspect d’un homme. 27Je vis que la partie supérieure de son corps, au-dessus de ce qui ressemblait à sa taille, avait un éclat étincelant et l’aspect du feu tout autour, et la partie inférieure semblait comme baignée de feu et répandait autour d’elle une vive clarté. 28La clarté qui l’environnait avait l’aspect de l’arc-en-ciel qui resplendit dans les nuées en un jour de pluie. C’est ainsi que m’apparut ce qui ressemblait à la gloire de l’Eternel. A cette vue, je tombai la face contre terre, et j’entendis quelqu’un me parler.

4¶ And I looked, and, behold, a whirlwind came out of the north, a great cloud, and a fire infolding itself, and a brightness was about it, and out of the midst thereof as the colour of amber, out of the midst of the fire.1.4 infolding…: Heb. catching itself 5Also out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance; they had the likeness of a man. 6And every one had four faces, and every one had four wings. 7And their feet were straight feet; and the sole of their feet was like the sole of a calf’s foot: and they sparkled like the colour of burnished brass.1.7 straight…: Heb. a straight foot 8And they had the hands of a man under their wings on their four sides; and they four had their faces and their wings. 9Their wings were joined one to another; they turned not when they went; they went every one straight forward. 10As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man, and the face of a lion, on the right side: and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four also had the face of an eagle. 11Thus were their faces: and their wings were stretched upward; two wings of every one were joined one to another, and two covered their bodies.1.11 stretched…: or, divided above 12And they went every one straight forward: whither the spirit was to go, they went; and they turned not when they went. 13As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, and like the appearance of lamps: it went up and down among the living creatures; and the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning. 14And the living creatures ran and returned as the appearance of a flash of lightning.
15¶ Now as I beheld the living creatures, behold one wheel upon the earth by the living creatures, with his four faces. 16The appearance of the wheels and their work was like unto the colour of a beryl: and they four had one likeness: and their appearance and their work was as it were a wheel in the middle of a wheel. 17When they went, they went upon their four sides: and they turned not when they went. 18As for their rings, they were so high that they were dreadful; and their rings were full of eyes round about them four.1.18 and their rings: or, and their strakes 19And when the living creatures went, the wheels went by them: and when the living creatures were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up. 20Whithersoever the spirit was to go, they went, thither was their spirit to go; and the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels.1.20 of…: or, of life 21When those went, these went; and when those stood, these stood; and when those were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels.1.21 of…: or, of life 22And the likeness of the firmament upon the heads of the living creature was as the colour of the terrible crystal, stretched forth over their heads above. 23And under the firmament were their wings straight, the one toward the other: every one had two, which covered on this side, and every one had two, which covered on that side, their bodies. 24And when they went, I heard the noise of their wings, like the noise of great waters, as the voice of the Almighty, the voice of speech, as the noise of an host: when they stood, they let down their wings. 25And there was a voice from the firmament that was over their heads, when they stood, and had let down their wings.
26¶ And above the firmament that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone: and upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it. 27And I saw as the colour of amber, as the appearance of fire round about within it, from the appearance of his loins even upward, and from the appearance of his loins even downward, I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and it had brightness round about. 28As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one that spake.
