Elisée secourt une pauvre veuve
1La veuve d’un disciple des prophètes implora Elisée en ces termes : Ton serviteur mon mari est mort. Tu sais combien il craignait l’Eternel. Or, voilà que l’homme qui lui avait prêté de l’argent veut prendre mes deux enfants et en faire des esclaves.
2Elisée lui demanda : Que puis-je faire pour toi ? Dis-moi ce que tu as dans ta maison.
Elle répondit : Je n’ai plus rien d’autre chez moi qu’un flacon d’huile4.2 En Orient, l’huile est la base de l’alimentation comme des soins du corps..
3Il dit alors : Va donc emprunter chez tous tes voisins autant de récipients vides que tu pourras. 4Puis tu rentreras chez toi, tu fermeras la porte sur toi et sur tes fils, tu verseras de l’huile dans tous ces récipients et tu les mettras de côté à mesure qu’ils seront pleins.
5La femme le quitta et fit ce qu’il lui avait dit. Elle ferma la porte sur elle et sur ses fils ; ceux-ci lui présentaient les récipients, et elle les remplissait. 6Lorsqu’ils furent tous pleins, elle dit à l’un de ses fils : Passe-moi encore un récipient.
Mais il lui répondit : Il n’y en a plus.
Au même moment, l’huile s’arrêta de couler. 7Elle alla le raconter à l’homme de Dieu qui lui dit : Va vendre cette huile. Tu pourras rembourser ta dette et vivre, toi et tes fils, avec ce qui te restera.
Elisée et le fils de la Sunamite
La naissance de l’enfant
8Un jour, Elisée passait par le village de Sunem4.8 Dans la plaine de Jizréel attribuée à la tribu d’Issacar (voir Jos 19.18 ; 1 S 28.4 ; 1 R 1.3).. Une femme riche insista auprès de lui pour qu’il accepte de prendre un repas chez elle. Dès lors, chaque fois qu’il passait par ce village, il s’arrêtait chez elle pour manger. 9Elle dit à son mari : Je sais que cet homme qui passe toujours chez nous est un saint homme de Dieu. 10Nous pourrions lui construire une petite chambre sur le toit et y mettre pour lui un lit, une table, une chaise et une lampe. Il pourrait loger là quand il viendra chez nous.
11Un jour qu’Elisée repassait à Sunem, il alla donc se retirer dans la petite chambre haute et y passa la nuit. 12Puis il dit à son serviteur Guéhazi4.12 Voir 5.19-27 ; 6.15. : Appelle cette Sunamite !
Guéhazi l’appela, et elle vint se présenter devant lui. 13Elisée dit à Guéhazi : Dis-lui : « Tu t’es donné beaucoup de peine en faisant tout cela pour nous. Que pouvons-nous faire pour toi ? Faut-il parler en ta faveur au roi ou au chef de l’armée ? »
Elle répondit : Non, merci. Je vis heureuse au milieu de mon peuple.
14Elisée demanda à son serviteur : Que pourrions-nous faire pour elle ?
Guéhazi répondit : Hélas ! elle n’a pas d’enfant, et son mari est âgé.
15Elisée lui dit : Appelle-la !
Guéhazi obéit, et elle vint se présenter sur le pas de la porte.
16Elisée lui dit : L’an prochain, à la même époque, tu tiendras un fils dans tes bras !
Elle s’écria alors : Que mon seigneur, homme de Dieu, ne me donne pas de faux espoirs, moi qui suis sa servante !
17Cependant, cette femme devint enceinte et, l’année suivante à la même époque, elle donna naissance à un fils, exactement comme Elisée le lui avait prédit.
La mort de l’enfant
18L’enfant grandit. Un jour qu’il était allé rejoindre son père auprès des moissonneurs, 19il cria soudain à son père : Oh, ma tête ! Que j’ai mal à la tête4.19 Il s’agit probablement d’une insolation (voir Ps 121.6), l’époque de la moisson étant l’une des plus chaudes de l’année. !
Le père ordonna à son serviteur : Emporte-le vite chez sa mère !
20Le serviteur l’emporta et l’amena à sa mère, qui le prit sur ses genoux. Il y resta jusqu’à midi, puis il mourut. 21Elle monta dans la chambre du prophète, le coucha sur le lit de l’homme de Dieu, referma la porte sur lui et sortit. 22Puis elle appela son mari et lui dit : Donne-moi, je te prie, l’un des jeunes serviteurs et une ânesse ; je vais vite aller chez l’homme de Dieu et je reviens aussitôt.
23– Pourquoi veux-tu aller chez lui aujourd’hui ? lui demanda-t-il. Ce n’est ni la nouvelle lune ni un jour de sabbat.
Elle lui répondit : Tout va bien.
24Puis elle fit seller l’ânesse et dit à son jeune serviteur : Conduis-moi rapidement ! Ne m’arrête pas en cours de route sans que je te l’ordonne !
25Elle voyagea ainsi et parvint jusqu’au mont Carmel4.25 Voir 2.25. A une trentaine de kilomètres de Sunem. où habitait l’homme de Dieu. Quand celui-ci l’aperçut de loin, il dit à son serviteur Guéhazi : Regarde, c’est notre Sunamite. 26Cours vite à sa rencontre et demande-lui : « Tout va-t-il bien pour toi ? Ton mari est-il en bonne santé ? L’enfant va-t-il bien ? »
Elle répondit : Tout va bien.
27Elle poursuivit jusqu’à l’homme de Dieu sur la montagne, elle se jeta à ses pieds. Guéhazi s’approcha pour l’écarter. Mais Elisée lui dit : Laisse-la faire ! Elle est profondément affligée, mais l’Eternel ne me l’a pas fait savoir et il ne m’en a pas révélé la cause.
28Alors la femme s’écria : Est-ce que j’ai demandé un fils à mon seigneur ? Ne t’avais-je pas dit : « Ne me donne pas de faux espoirs » ?
Elisée ressuscite l’enfant
29Elisée ordonna à Guéhazi : Mets ta ceinture ! Prends mon bâton en main et va. Si tu rencontres quelqu’un en chemin, ne perds pas de temps à le saluer, et si quelqu’un te salue, ne t’arrête pas pour lui répondre. Quand tu arriveras dans la maison de cette femme, tu poseras mon bâton sur le visage du garçon.
30La mère de l’enfant s’écria : Aussi vrai que l’Eternel est vivant et que tu es toi-même en vie, je ne partirai pas sans toi !
Alors Elisée se leva et se mit en route avec elle. 31Guéhazi les avait devancés et il avait posé le bâton sur le visage du petit garçon, mais rien ne s’était passé : pas un son, pas une réaction. Il revint donc sur ses pas, à la rencontre d’Elisée, et lui annonça que l’enfant n’était pas revenu à lui. 32Quand Elisée arriva à la maison, le petit garçon était mort, étendu sur le lit. 33Elisée entra, ferma la porte sur eux deux et pria l’Eternel. 34Il monta sur le lit et se plaça sur l’enfant, il appliqua sa bouche sur sa bouche, ses yeux sur ses yeux, ses mains sur ses mains. Comme il restait ainsi étendu sur lui, le corps de l’enfant commença à se réchauffer. 35Le prophète se releva, marcha de long en large dans la chambre, puis s’étendit de nouveau sur l’enfant. Soudain le petit garçon éternua sept fois et rouvrit les yeux. 36Elisée appela Guéhazi et lui dit : Va chercher cette Sunamite !
Guéhazi l’appela et elle vint vers Elisée qui lui dit : Voici ton fils, reprends-le !
37Elle s’avança, se jeta à ses pieds et se prosterna jusqu’à terre, puis elle prit son fils dans ses bras et sortit de la pièce.
Elisée pourvoit à la nourriture de ses disciples
38Elisée retourna à Guilgal4.38 Le Guilgal de 2.1 (voir note) où se trouvait une école de disciples du prophète.. Or, la famine sévissait dans cette contrée. Un jour, ses disciples étaient assis devant lui. Il s’interrompit et dit à son serviteur : Mets la grande marmite sur le feu et prépare une soupe pour les disciples !
39Alors un membre du groupe sortit dans la campagne pour ramasser des légumes. Dans une vigne sauvage, il trouva des coloquintes sauvages4.39 Plante ressemblant à des concombres. Son fruit allongé, de la grosseur d’une orange, est extrêmement amer. et en remplit le pan de son vêtement. A son retour, il les coupa en morceaux et en remplit la marmite pour la soupe, mais personne ne savait ce que c’était. 40On servit la soupe aux hommes, mais dès qu’ils l’eurent goûtée, ils s’écrièrent : Cette soupe est du poison, homme de Dieu !
Et ils ne purent la manger. 41Mais Elisée ordonna : Apportez-moi de la farine !
Il en versa dans la marmite et dit : Que l’on serve ces gens et qu’ils mangent !
La soupe qui était dans la marmite ne contenait plus rien de mauvais.
42A cette époque, un homme vint de Baal-Shalisha4.42 D’après 1 S 9.4, cette localité mentionnée seulement ici se trouvait à l’ouest de la montagne d’Ephraïm.. Il apporta des vivres à l’homme de Dieu : vingt pains d’orge et de blé nouveau dans son sac, comme premiers produits de la nouvelle récolte. Elisée dit à son serviteur : Partage ces vivres entre tout le monde et qu’ils mangent.
43Celui-ci répondit : Comment pourrais-je nourrir cent personnes avec cela ?
Mais Elisée répéta : Partage ces vivres entre tous et qu’ils mangent, car l’Eternel déclare : « Chacun mangera à sa faim, et il y aura même des restes. »
44Le serviteur distribua les pains à tout le monde, ils mangèrent, et il y eut effectivement des restes, comme l’Eternel l’avait annoncé.

And she said, Thine handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil. 3Then he said, Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbours, even empty vessels; borrow not a few.4.3 borrow not…: or, scant not 4And when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, and thou shalt set aside that which is full. 5So she went from him, and shut the door upon her and upon her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured out. 6And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a vessel more. And the oil stayed. 7Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children of the rest.4.7 debt: or, creditor
8¶ And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread.4.8 it fell on a day: Heb. there was a day4.8 constrained him: Heb. laid hold on him 9And she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is an holy man of God, which passeth by us continually. 10Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a stool, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither. 11And it fell on a day, that he came thither, and he turned into the chamber, and lay there. 12And he said to Gehazi his servant, Call this Shunammite. And when he had called her, she stood before him. 13And he said unto him, Say now unto her, Behold, thou hast been careful for us with all this care; what is to be done for thee? wouldest thou be spoken for to the king, or to the captain of the host? And she answered, I dwell among mine own people. 14And he said, What then is to be done for her? And Gehazi answered, Verily she hath no child, and her husband is old. 15And he said, Call her. And when he had called her, she stood in the door. 16And he said, About this season, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son. And she said, Nay, my lord, thou man of God, do not lie unto thine handmaid.4.16 season: Heb. set time 17And the woman conceived, and bare a son at that season that Elisha had said unto her, according to the time of life.
18¶ And when the child was grown, it fell on a day, that he went out to his father to the reapers. 19And he said unto his father, My head, my head. And he said to a lad, Carry him to his mother. 20And when he had taken him, and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees till noon, and then died. 21And she went up, and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door upon him, and went out. 22And she called unto her husband, and said, Send me, I pray thee, one of the young men, and one of the asses, that I may run to the man of God, and come again. 23And he said, Wherefore wilt thou go to him to day? it is neither new moon, nor sabbath. And she said, It shall be well.4.23 well: Heb. peace 24Then she saddled an ass, and said to her servant, Drive, and go forward; slack not thy riding for me, except I bid thee.4.24 slack…: Heb. restrain not for me to ride 25So she went and came unto the man of God to mount Carmel. And she answered, It is well. 27And when she came to the man of God to the hill, she caught him by the feet: but Gehazi came near to thrust her away. And he arose, and followed her. 31And Gehazi passed on before them, and laid the staff upon the face of the child; but there was neither voice, nor hearing. Wherefore he went again to meet him, and told him, saying, The child is not awaked.4.31 hearing: Heb. attention 32And when Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was dead, and laid upon his bed. 33He went in therefore, and shut the door upon them twain, and prayed unto the LORD. 34And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and he stretched himself upon the child; and the flesh of the child waxed warm. 35Then he returned, and walked in the house to and fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.4.35 to and fro: Heb. once hither and once thither 36And he called Gehazi, and said, Call this Shunammite. So he called her. And when she was come in unto him, he said, Take up thy son. 37Then she went in, and fell at his feet, and bowed herself to the ground, and took up her son, and went out.
38¶ And Elisha came again to Gilgal: and there was a dearth in the land; and the sons of the prophets were sitting before him: and he said unto his servant, Set on the great pot, and seethe pottage for the sons of the prophets. 39And one went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, and gathered thereof wild gourds his lap full, and came and shred them into the pot of pottage: for they knew them not. 40So they poured out for the men to eat. And it came to pass, as they were eating of the pottage, that they cried out, and said, O thou man of God, there is death in the pot. And they could not eat thereof. 41But he said, Then bring meal. And he cast it into the pot; and he said, Pour out for the people, that they may eat. And there was no harm in the pot.4.41 harm: Heb. evil thing
42¶ And there came a man from Baal-shalisha, and brought the man of God bread of the firstfruits, twenty loaves of barley, and full ears of corn in the husk thereof. And he said, Give unto the people, that they may eat.4.42 the husk…: or, his scrip, or, garment 43And his servitor said, What, should I set this before an hundred men? He said again, Give the people, that they may eat: for thus saith the LORD, They shall eat, and shall leave thereof. 44So he set it before them, and they did eat, and left thereof, according to the word of the LORD.
