David renvoyé à Tsiqlag par les princes des Philistins
1Les Philistins concentrèrent toutes leurs troupes à Apheq, tandis qu’Israël était campé près de la source de Jizréel29.1 Apheq se trouve dans les environs de Sunem (28.4), à distinguer de l’Apheq mentionné dans 4.1 (voir 1 R 20.26, 30 ; 2 R 13.17).. 2Les cinq princes des Philistins défilèrent en tête de leurs unités, des « centaines » et des « milliers », et David et ses hommes formaient l’arrière-garde autour d’Akish. 3Les princes des Philistins demandèrent : Que font ici ces Hébreux ?
Akish leur répondit : Ne reconnaissez-vous pas David qui avait été au service de Saül, roi d’Israël, mais qui, depuis un an ou deux, est chez moi ? Depuis qu’il s’est rallié à nous, je n’ai jamais rien eu à lui reprocher.
4Mais les princes des Philistins se fâchèrent contre Akish et lui dirent : Renvoie cet homme dans la ville que tu lui as assignée. Il ne faut pas qu’il participe avec nous au combat, sinon il pourrait se retourner contre nous avec ses hommes en pleine bataille. N’est-ce pas au prix de la tête de nos gens qu’il pourrait regagner la faveur de son souverain ? 5N’oublions pas que c’est pour David que les femmes chantaient en dansant : « Saül a frappé ses milliers, et David ses dizaines de milliers29.5 Voir 18.7 ; 21.12.. »
6Finalement, Akish appela David et lui dit : Aussi vrai que l’Eternel est vivant, tu es un homme juste et j’aurais aimé que tu prennes part avec moi à cette expédition militaire, car je n’ai jamais rien eu à te reprocher, depuis que tu es venu chez moi jusqu’à ce jour ; mais tu n’es pas bien vu des autres princes philistins. 7Maintenant donc, repars en paix chez toi, pour ne pas les indisposer.
8David lui dit : Mais qu’ai-je donc fait pour que je ne puisse pas aller combattre les ennemis de mon seigneur le roi ? Qu’as-tu trouvé à reprocher à ton serviteur depuis le jour où je me suis mis à ton service jusqu’à maintenant ?
9Akish répondit à David : Je le sais bien, car je t’ai apprécié comme un ange de Dieu ; seulement, les princes des Philistins m’ont dit : « Il ne participera pas à la bataille avec nous » ! 10Maintenant, lève-toi de bon matin, toi et les serviteurs de ton maître, qui sont venus avec toi29.10 L’ancienne version grecque ajoute : retournez au lieu que je vous ai assigné et ne gardez pas de ressentiment, car je te tiens pour un homme juste.. Levez-vous de bon matin dès qu’il fera clair et partez.
11Le lendemain, David et ses hommes se levèrent de bonne heure pour se mettre en route et regagner la Philistie, tandis que les Philistins montèrent vers Jizréel.
1Now the Philistines gathered together all their armies to Aphek: and the Israelites pitched by a fountain which is in Jezreel. 2And the lords of the Philistines passed on by hundreds, and by thousands: but David and his men passed on in the rereward with Achish. 3Then said the princes of the Philistines, What do these Hebrews here? And Achish said unto the princes of the Philistines, Is not this David, the servant of Saul the king of Israel, which hath been with me these days, or these years, and I have found no fault in him since he fell unto me unto this day? 4And the princes of the Philistines were wroth with him; and the princes of the Philistines said unto him, Make this fellow return, that he may go again to his place which thou hast appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest in the battle he be an adversary to us: for wherewith should he reconcile himself unto his master? should it not be with the heads of these men? 5Is not this David, of whom they sang one to another in dances, saying, Saul slew his thousands, and David his ten thousands?
6¶ Then Achish called David, and said unto him, Surely, as the LORD liveth, thou hast been upright, and thy going out and thy coming in with me in the host is good in my sight: for I have not found evil in thee since the day of thy coming unto me unto this day: nevertheless the lords favour thee not.29.6 the lords…: Heb. thou art not good in the eyes of the lords 7Wherefore now return, and go in peace, that thou displease not the lords of the Philistines.29.7 displease…: Heb. do not evil in the eyes of the lords
8¶ And David said unto Achish, But what have I done? and what hast thou found in thy servant so long as I have been with thee unto this day, that I may not go fight against the enemies of my lord the king?29.8 with…: Heb. before thee 9And Achish answered and said to David, I know that thou art good in my sight, as an angel of God: notwithstanding the princes of the Philistines have said, He shall not go up with us to the battle. 10Wherefore now rise up early in the morning with thy master’s servants that are come with thee: and as soon as ye be up early in the morning, and have light, depart. 11So David and his men rose up early to depart in the morning, to return into the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.
