L’inauguration du Temple
L’Eternel vient habiter dans le Temple
(2 Ch 5.2 à 6.11)
1Alors Salomon rassembla auprès de lui à Jérusalem tous les responsables d’Israël, tous les chefs des tribus et les chefs de familles des Israélites pour faire transporter le coffre de l’alliance de l’Eternel depuis la Cité de David8.1 Voir 2 S 6.12-16 ; 1 Ch 15.25-29., qui est Sion. 2Tous les hommes d’Israël s’assemblèrent auprès du roi Salomon, au mois d’Etanim, qui est le septième mois8.2 Septembre-octobre., pendant la fête des Cabanes8.2 Voir Lv 23.33-43..
3Tous les responsables d’Israël vinrent, et les prêtres se chargèrent de porter le coffre sacré. 4Les prêtres et les lévites transportèrent le coffre de l’Eternel ainsi que la tente de la Rencontre et tous les ustensiles sacrés qu’elle contenait. 5Le roi Salomon et toute la communauté d’Israël rassemblée auprès de lui, devant le coffre, offrirent en sacrifice un très grand nombre de petit et de gros bétail qu’on ne pouvait évaluer.
6Les prêtres installèrent le coffre de l’alliance de l’Eternel à la place qui lui était destinée dans la salle du fond du Temple, c’est-à-dire dans le lieu très saint, sous les ailes des chérubins. 7Car les chérubins avaient leurs ailes déployées au-dessus de l’emplacement du coffre, de sorte qu’ils formaient un dais protecteur au-dessus du coffre et de ses barres. 8On avait donné à ces barres une longueur telle que leurs extrémités se voyaient depuis le lieu saint qui précédait le sanctuaire intérieur, mais elles ne se voyaient pas de l’extérieur. Elles sont restées là jusqu’à ce jour. 9Dans le coffre, il y avait seulement les deux tablettes de pierre que Moïse y avait déposées à Horeb8.9 Voir Ex 25.16 ; 40.20 ; Dt 10.5., lorsque l’Eternel conclut une alliance avec les Israélites à leur sortie d’Egypte.
10Au moment où les prêtres sortirent du lieu saint, la nuée lumineuse remplit le temple de l’Eternel. 11Les prêtres ne purent pas y rester pour accomplir le service, à cause de la nuée, car la gloire de l’Eternel remplissait son temple8.11 Voir Ex 40.34-35..
12Alors Salomon dit : L’Eternel a déclaré qu’il demeurerait dans un lieu obscur. 13J’ai enfin bâti pour toi une résidence, un lieu où tu habiteras éternellement !
Salomon loue l’Eternel
14Puis le roi se retourna et bénit toute l’assemblée d’Israël qui se tenait debout.
15Il dit : Béni soit l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël qui a, de sa propre bouche, parlé à mon père David et qui a agi pour accomplir la promesse qu’il lui avait faite. Il lui avait dit : 16« Depuis le jour où j’ai fait sortir mon peuple Israël d’Egypte, je n’ai jamais choisi une ville particulière parmi toutes les tribus d’Israël pour qu’on y bâtisse un temple où je sois présent, mais j’ai choisi David pour gouverner mon peuple Israël8.16 Voir 2 S 7.4-11 ; 1 Ch 17.3-10.. » 17Mon père David avait à cœur de bâtir un temple en l’honneur de l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël. 18Mais l’Eternel lui a déclaré : « Ton projet de bâtir un temple en mon honneur est une excellente chose : tu as bien fait de prendre cela à cœur. 19Toutefois, ce n’est pas toi qui bâtiras ce temple, c’est ton propre fils qui le bâtira pour moi8.19 Voir 2 S 7.1-3 ; 1 Ch 17.1-2.. » 20L’Eternel a tenu sa promesse : j’ai succédé à mon père David et j’occupe le trône d’Israël comme l’Eternel l’avait annoncé, et j’ai construit ce temple en l’honneur de l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël. 21J’y ai réservé un emplacement pour le coffre qui contient le code de l’alliance de l’Eternel, cette alliance qu’il a conclue avec nos ancêtres quand il les a fait sortir d’Egypte.
Prière d’intercession de Salomon
(2 Ch 6.12-40)
22Puis Salomon se plaça devant l’autel de l’Eternel, en faisant face à toute l’assemblée d’Israël. Il leva les mains vers le ciel 23et pria : Eternel, Dieu d’Israël ! Il n’y a pas de Dieu semblable à toi, ni là-haut dans le ciel, ni ici-bas sur la terre ! Tu es fidèle à ton alliance et tu conserves ta bonté à tes serviteurs qui se conduisent selon ta volonté de tout leur cœur. 24Ainsi tu as tenu la promesse que tu avais faite à ton serviteur David, mon père, oui, tu as agi pour que soit accompli aujourd’hui ce que tu lui avais déclaré de ta propre bouche. 25A présent, Eternel, Dieu d’Israël, veuille aussi tenir l’autre promesse que tu lui as faite lorsque tu lui as dit : « Il y aura toujours l’un de tes descendants qui siégera sous mon regard sur le trône d’Israël, à condition qu’ils veillent sur leur conduite pour vivre selon ma volonté comme tu as toi-même vécu8.25 Voir 1 R 2.4.. » 26Oui, maintenant, Dieu d’Israël, daigne réaliser cette promesse que tu as faite à ton serviteur, mon père David.
27Mais est-ce qu’en vérité Dieu habiterait sur la terre, alors que le ciel dans toute son immensité ne saurait le contenir ? Combien moins ce temple que je viens de te construire ! 28Toutefois, Eternel, mon Dieu, veuille être attentif à la prière et à la supplication de ton serviteur et écouter l’appel que je t’adresse en ce jour. 29Que tes yeux veillent nuit et jour sur ce temple, ce lieu dont tu as toi-même dit : « Là, je serai présent8.29 Voir Dt 12.11.. » Et exauce la prière que ton serviteur t’adresse en ce lieu. 30Daigne écouter ma supplication et celle de ton peuple Israël lorsqu’il viendra prier ici. Depuis le lieu où tu demeures, depuis le ciel, entends notre prière et veuille pardonner !
31Lorsque quelqu’un sera accusé d’avoir commis une faute envers son prochain et qu’on exigera de lui qu’il prête serment avec des imprécations ici devant ton autel dans ce temple, 32sois attentif depuis le ciel, interviens et juge tes serviteurs pour condamner le coupable, afin qu’il reçoive le châtiment que mérite sa conduite et pour faire reconnaître l’innocence du juste afin qu’il soit traité selon son innocence.
33Quand ton peuple Israël aura été battu par un ennemi, parce que ses membres auront péché contre toi, si ensuite ils reviennent à toi, s’ils t’adressent leurs louanges, te prient et t’expriment leurs supplications dans ce temple, 34écoute-les depuis le ciel, pardonne le péché de ton peuple Israël et ramène-les dans le pays que tu as donné à leurs ancêtres !
35Quand le ciel sera fermé et refusera de donner la pluie, parce que ton peuple aura péché contre toi, si ce peuple prie en ce lieu, s’il te loue et se détourne de ses fautes, après que tu l’as affligé, 36écoute-le depuis le ciel, pardonne le péché de tes serviteurs et de ton peuple Israël, indique-leur la bonne ligne de conduite à suivre, et fais tomber la pluie sur ton pays que tu as donné en possession à ton peuple !
37Quand la famine ou la peste sévira dans le pays, quand les céréales seront atteintes de maladie, quand surviendra une invasion de sauterelles ou de criquets, ou quand l’ennemi assiégera ton peuple dans les villes fortifiées du pays, quand quelque maladie ou quelque malheur s’abattra sur lui, 38-39si, considérant sa peine, chacun tend les mains vers ce temple, veuille exaucer du ciel, le lieu où tu demeures, les prières et les supplications que t’adressera tout homme ou tout ton peuple Israël. Pardonne-leur et traite chacun selon sa conduite, puisque tu connais le cœur de chacun. En effet, toi seul tu connais le cœur de tous les humains. 40De cette manière, ils te craindront tout le temps qu’ils vivront sur l’étendue du territoire que tu as donné à nos ancêtres.
41Et même si un étranger qui ne fait pas partie de ton peuple Israël entend parler de toi et vient d’un pays lointain 42– car les étrangers apprendront que tu es un grand Dieu qui agit en déployant sa puissance – quand un étranger viendra prier dans ce temple, 43veuille l’écouter depuis le ciel, la demeure où tu habites, et lui accorder tout ce qu’il t’aura demandé. De cette manière, tous les peuples du monde te connaîtront, ils te craindront comme le fait ton peuple Israël et ils reconnaîtront que le temple que j’ai construit t’appartient.
44Lorsque ton peuple partira pour combattre son ennemi, sur le chemin où tu l’enverras, s’il prie l’Eternel en se tournant vers la ville que tu as choisie et vers ce temple que j’ai construit en ton honneur, 45daigne écouter, depuis le ciel, leurs prières et leurs supplications et défendre leur cause !
46Il se peut qu’ils commettent un péché contre toi – car quel est l’homme qui ne commet jamais de péché ? Alors tu seras irrité contre eux, tu les livreras au pouvoir de leurs ennemis, qui les emmèneront en captivité dans un pays ennemi, proche ou lointain. 47S’ils se mettent à réfléchir dans le pays où ils auront été déportés, s’ils reviennent en arrière et t’adressent leurs supplications dans le pays de leurs vainqueurs et qu’ils disent : « Nous avons péché, nous avons mal agi, nous sommes coupables », 48s’ils reviennent à toi de tout leur cœur et de tout leur être, dans le pays des ennemis qui les auront déportés, et s’ils te prient en se tournant vers le pays que tu as donné à leurs ancêtres, vers la ville que tu as choisie et vers le temple que j’ai construit en ton honneur, 49alors, depuis le ciel, la demeure où tu habites, veuille écouter leur prière et leur supplication et défendre leur cause !
50Pardonne à ton peuple les péchés qu’il aura commis contre toi et toutes ses fautes contre toi ! Inspire à leurs vainqueurs qui les retiennent captifs de la compassion pour eux, et qu’ils aient compassion d’eux. 51En effet, Israël n’est-il pas ton peuple, celui qui t’appartient, depuis que tu l’as fait sortir d’Egypte, de cette fournaise à fondre le fer ?
52Veuille considérer favorablement la supplication de ton serviteur et celle de ton peuple Israël pour les exaucer chaque fois qu’ils te prieront. 53Car c’est toi, ô Seigneur Eternel, qui as choisi ce peuple pour toi parmi tous les autres peuples de la terre pour en faire le peuple qui t’appartient, comme tu l’as déclaré par l’intermédiaire de ton serviteur Moïse quand tu as fait sortir nos ancêtres d’Egypte.
Bénédiction de l’assemblée
54Or, lorsque Salomon eut terminé toute cette prière de supplication à l’Eternel, il se releva de devant l’autel de l’Eternel, où il était resté agenouillé, les mains levées vers le ciel. 55Il se releva et, d’une voix forte, il bénit toute l’assemblée d’Israël, en disant : 56Béni soit l’Eternel qui a accordé la paix à son peuple Israël, conformément à ses promesses. En effet, aucune promesse de bienfait qu’il nous a faite par l’intermédiaire de son serviteur Moïse n’a manqué de se réaliser8.56 Voir Dt 12.10 ; Jos 21.44-45.. 57Que l’Eternel, notre Dieu, soit avec nous, comme il a été avec nos ancêtres ! Qu’il ne nous abandonne jamais, qu’il ne nous délaisse pas, 58mais qu’il incline notre cœur vers lui, pour que nous marchions dans les voies qu’il a prescrites pour nous, en obéissant à ses commandements, ses ordonnances et ses lois qu’il a donnés à nos ancêtres. 59Puisse l’Eternel notre Dieu prendre en considération jour et nuit toutes les prières de supplication que je viens de lui présenter et défendre jour après jour la cause de son serviteur et de son peuple Israël. 60Ainsi tous les peuples de la terre reconnaîtront que c’est l’Eternel qui est Dieu et qu’il n’y en a pas d’autre. 61Quant à vous, que votre cœur soit attaché sans réserve à l’Eternel notre Dieu, pour que vous viviez d’une manière conforme à ses lois et que vous obéissiez à ses commandements, comme c’est le cas aujourd’hui.
La première fête célébrée au Temple
(2 Ch 7.4-10)
62Le roi et tout Israël offrirent des sacrifices devant l’Eternel. 63Salomon offrit à l’Eternel un sacrifice de communion pour lequel il immola 22 000 bœufs et 120 000 moutons. C’est de cette manière que le roi et tous les Israélites inaugurèrent le temple de l’Eternel. 64Ce même jour, le roi consacra l’intérieur de la cour qui s’étend devant le temple de l’Eternel pour y offrir les holocaustes, les offrandes et les graisses des sacrifices de communion, car l’autel de bronze qui se trouvait devant l’Eternel était trop petit pour recevoir tous les holocaustes, les offrandes et les graisses des sacrifices de communion.
65Salomon et tout Israël célébrèrent la fête. Une grande assemblée de gens venus depuis la région de Lebo-Hamath jusqu’au torrent d’Egypte8.65 C’est-à-dire du nord (Lebo-Hamath) au sud (le torrent d’Egypte) du royaume. se tint devant l’Eternel, notre Dieu, pendant sept jours puis encore sept autres jours, soit quatorze jours en tout8.65 Les mots puis encore sept autres jours… en tout manquent dans l’ancienne version grecque.. 66Après cela, le huitième jour de la seconde semaine, Salomon renvoya le peuple. Les gens vinrent le bénir, puis chacun rentra chez soi. Tous étaient joyeux et avaient le cœur content à cause de tous les bienfaits que l’Eternel avait accordés à son serviteur David et à Israël.
1Then Solomon assembled the elders of Israel, and all the heads of the tribes, the chief of the fathers of the children of Israel, unto king Solomon in Jerusalem, that they might bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of the city of David, which is Zion.8.1 chief: Heb. princes 2And all the men of Israel assembled themselves unto king Solomon at the feast in the month Ethanim, which is the seventh month. 3And all the elders of Israel came, and the priests took up the ark. 4And they brought up the ark of the LORD, and the tabernacle of the congregation, and all the holy vessels that were in the tabernacle, even those did the priests and the Levites bring up. 5And king Solomon, and all the congregation of Israel, that were assembled unto him, were with him before the ark, sacrificing sheep and oxen, that could not be told nor numbered for multitude. 6And the priests brought in the ark of the covenant of the LORD unto his place, into the oracle of the house, to the most holy place, even under the wings of the cherubims. 7For the cherubims spread forth their two wings over the place of the ark, and the cherubims covered the ark and the staves thereof above. 8And they drew out the staves, that the ends of the staves were seen out in the holy place before the oracle, and they were not seen without: and there they are unto this day.8.8 ends: Heb. heads8.8 holy…: or, ark 9There was nothing in the ark save the two tables of stone, which Moses put there at Horeb, when the LORD made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt.8.9 when the: or, where the 10And it came to pass, when the priests were come out of the holy place, that the cloud filled the house of the LORD, 11So that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of the LORD.
12¶ Then spake Solomon, The LORD said that he would dwell in the thick darkness. 13I have surely built thee an house to dwell in, a settled place for thee to abide in for ever. 14And the king turned his face about, and blessed all the congregation of Israel: (and all the congregation of Israel stood;) 15And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, which spake with his mouth unto David my father, and hath with his hand fulfilled it, saying, 16Since the day that I brought forth my people Israel out of Egypt, I chose no city out of all the tribes of Israel to build an house, that my name might be therein; but I chose David to be over my people Israel. 17And it was in the heart of David my father to build an house for the name of the LORD God of Israel. 18And the LORD said unto David my father, Whereas it was in thine heart to build an house unto my name, thou didst well that it was in thine heart. 19Nevertheless thou shalt not build the house; but thy son that shall come forth out of thy loins, he shall build the house unto my name. 20And the LORD hath performed his word that he spake, and I am risen up in the room of David my father, and sit on the throne of Israel, as the LORD promised, and have built an house for the name of the LORD God of Israel. 21And I have set there a place for the ark, wherein is the covenant of the LORD, which he made with our fathers, when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.
22¶ And Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in the presence of all the congregation of Israel, and spread forth his hands toward heaven: 23And he said, LORD God of Israel, there is no God like thee, in heaven above, or on earth beneath, who keepest covenant and mercy with thy servants that walk before thee with all their heart: 24Who hast kept with thy servant David my father that thou promisedst him: thou spakest also with thy mouth, and hast fulfilled it with thine hand, as it is this day. 25Therefore now, LORD God of Israel, keep with thy servant David my father that thou promisedst him, saying, There shall not fail thee a man in my sight to sit on the throne of Israel; so that thy children take heed to their way, that they walk before me as thou hast walked before me.8.25 fail…: Heb. be cut off unto thee a man from my sight8.25 so that: Heb. only if 26And now, O God of Israel, let thy word, I pray thee, be verified, which thou spakest unto thy servant David my father. 27But will God indeed dwell on the earth? behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded? 28Yet have thou respect unto the prayer of thy servant, and to his supplication, O LORD my God, to hearken unto the cry and to the prayer, which thy servant prayeth before thee to day: 29That thine eyes may be open toward this house night and day, even toward the place of which thou hast said, My name shall be there: that thou mayest hearken unto the prayer which thy servant shall make toward this place.8.29 toward this place: or, in this place 30And hearken thou to the supplication of thy servant, and of thy people Israel, when they shall pray toward this place: and hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place: and when thou hearest, forgive.8.30 toward this place: or, in this place
31¶ If any man trespass against his neighbour, and an oath be laid upon him to cause him to swear, and the oath come before thine altar in this house:8.31 and an oath…: Heb. and he require an oath of him 32Then hear thou in heaven, and do, and judge thy servants, condemning the wicked, to bring his way upon his head; and justifying the righteous, to give him according to his righteousness.
33¶ When thy people Israel be smitten down before the enemy, because they have sinned against thee, and shall turn again to thee, and confess thy name, and pray, and make supplication unto thee in this house:8.33 in: or, toward 34Then hear thou in heaven, and forgive the sin of thy people Israel, and bring them again unto the land which thou gavest unto their fathers.
35¶ When heaven is shut up, and there is no rain, because they have sinned against thee; if they pray toward this place, and confess thy name, and turn from their sin, when thou afflictest them: 36Then hear thou in heaven, and forgive the sin of thy servants, and of thy people Israel, that thou teach them the good way wherein they should walk, and give rain upon thy land, which thou hast given to thy people for an inheritance.
37¶ If there be in the land famine, if there be pestilence, blasting, mildew, locust, or if there be caterpiller; if their enemy besiege them in the land of their cities; whatsoever plague, whatsoever sickness there be;8.37 cities: or, jurisdiction 38What prayer and supplication soever be made by any man, or by all thy people Israel, which shall know every man the plague of his own heart, and spread forth his hands toward this house: 39Then hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place, and forgive, and do, and give to every man according to his ways, whose heart thou knowest; (for thou, even thou only, knowest the hearts of all the children of men;) 40That they may fear thee all the days that they live in the land which thou gavest unto our fathers. 41Moreover concerning a stranger, that is not of thy people Israel, but cometh out of a far country for thy name’s sake; 42(For they shall hear of thy great name, and of thy strong hand, and of thy stretched out arm;) when he shall come and pray toward this house; 43Hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place, and do according to all that the stranger calleth to thee for: that all people of the earth may know thy name, to fear thee, as do thy people Israel; and that they may know that this house, which I have builded, is called by thy name.8.43 this…: Heb. thy name is called upon this house
44¶ If thy people go out to battle against their enemy, whithersoever thou shalt send them, and shall pray unto the LORD toward the city which thou hast chosen, and toward the house that I have built for thy name:8.44 toward the city: Heb. the way of the city 45Then hear thou in heaven their prayer and their supplication, and maintain their cause.8.45 cause: or, right 46If they sin against thee, (for there is no man that sinneth not,) and thou be angry with them, and deliver them to the enemy, so that they carry them away captives unto the land of the enemy, far or near; 47Yet if they shall bethink themselves in the land whither they were carried captives, and repent, and make supplication unto thee in the land of them that carried them captives, saying, We have sinned, and have done perversely, we have committed wickedness;8.47 bethink…: Heb. bring back to their heart 48And so return unto thee with all their heart, and with all their soul, in the land of their enemies, which led them away captive, and pray unto thee toward their land, which thou gavest unto their fathers, the city which thou hast chosen, and the house which I have built for thy name: 49Then hear thou their prayer and their supplication in heaven thy dwelling place, and maintain their cause,8.49 cause: or, right 50And forgive thy people that have sinned against thee, and all their transgressions wherein they have transgressed against thee, and give them compassion before them who carried them captive, that they may have compassion on them: 51For they be thy people, and thine inheritance, which thou broughtest forth out of Egypt, from the midst of the furnace of iron: 52That thine eyes may be open unto the supplication of thy servant, and unto the supplication of thy people Israel, to hearken unto them in all that they call for unto thee. 53For thou didst separate them from among all the people of the earth, to be thine inheritance, as thou spakest by the hand of Moses thy servant, when thou broughtest our fathers out of Egypt, O Lord GOD.
54And it was so, that when Solomon had made an end of praying all this prayer and supplication unto the LORD, he arose from before the altar of the LORD, from kneeling on his knees with his hands spread up to heaven. 55And he stood, and blessed all the congregation of Israel with a loud voice, saying, 56Blessed be the LORD, that hath given rest unto his people Israel, according to all that he promised: there hath not failed one word of all his good promise, which he promised by the hand of Moses his servant.8.56 failed: Heb. fallen 57The LORD our God be with us, as he was with our fathers: let him not leave us, nor forsake us: 58That he may incline our hearts unto him, to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and his statutes, and his judgments, which he commanded our fathers. 59And let these my words, wherewith I have made supplication before the LORD, be nigh unto the LORD our God day and night, that he maintain the cause of his servant, and the cause of his people Israel at all times, as the matter shall require:8.59 at all…: Heb. the thing of a day in his day 60That all the people of the earth may know that the LORD is God, and that there is none else. 61Let your heart therefore be perfect with the LORD our God, to walk in his statutes, and to keep his commandments, as at this day.
62¶ And the king, and all Israel with him, offered sacrifice before the LORD. 63And Solomon offered a sacrifice of peace offerings, which he offered unto the LORD, two and twenty thousand oxen, and an hundred and twenty thousand sheep. So the king and all the children of Israel dedicated the house of the LORD. 64The same day did the king hallow the middle of the court that was before the house of the LORD: for there he offered burnt offerings, and meat offerings, and the fat of the peace offerings: because the brasen altar that was before the LORD was too little to receive the burnt offerings, and meat offerings, and the fat of the peace offerings. 65And at that time Solomon held a feast, and all Israel with him, a great congregation, from the entering in of Hamath unto the river of Egypt, before the LORD our God, seven days and seven days, even fourteen days. 66On the eighth day he sent the people away: and they blessed the king, and went unto their tents joyful and glad of heart for all the goodness that the LORD had done for David his servant, and for Israel his people.8.66 blessed: or, thanked
