Si Jefta
1Si Jefta nga taga-Gilead usa ka maisog nga sundalo. Si Gilead ang iyang amahan. Ug ang iyang inahan usa ka babayeng nagabaligya sa iyang dungog. 2May mga anak usab si Gilead sa iyang asawa, ug sa dihang nanagko na kini, gipalayas nila si Jefta. Giingnan nila kini, “Wala kay mapanunod gikan sa among amahan, tungod kay anak ka sa laing babaye.” 3Busa mibiya si Jefta kanila ug mipuyo sa Tob. Ug didto, may mga bugoy nga miduol kaniya ug nanguyog sa iyang mga lakaw.
4Milabay ang panahon, nakiggira ang mga Amonihanon batok sa mga Israelinhon. 5Tungod niini, gipakuha sa mga tigdumala sa Gilead si Jefta didto sa Tob. 6Giingnan nila siya, “Pangulohi kami sa pagpakiggira sa mga Amonihanon.” 7Apan mitubag si Jefta, “Dili ba nga nasuko man kamo kanako ug gipalayas man gani ninyo ako gikan sa balay sa akong amahan? Karon nga anaa na kamo sa kalisod nganong mangayo kamo ug tabang kanako?” 8Apan miingon sila, “Tinuod ang imong gisulti, apan gikinahanglan ka namo karon. Uban kanamo sa pagpakiggira sa mga Amonihanon, ug himuon ka namong pangulo sa Gilead.” 9Mitubag si Jefta, “Pananglit dad-on ninyo ako pagbalik aron sa pagpakiggira sa mga Amonihanon, ug unya padag-on ako sa Ginoo, ako ba gayod ang ilhon ninyong pangulo?” 10Mitubag sila, “Oo, ikaw ang himuon namong pangulo. Ang Ginoo mismo mao ang among saksi.”
11Busa miuban si Jefta kanila, ug gihimo siya sa mga tawo nga pangulo ug komander. Ug didto sa Mizpa, nanumpa si Jefta atubangan sa Ginoo sa iyang pagdawat sa katungdanan isip pangulo.
12Unya nagsugo si Jefta ug mga mensahero sa pagpangutana sa hari sa mga Amonihanon kon nganong gisulong nila ang Israel. 13Mao kini ang tubag sa hari sa mga Amonihanon ngadto sa mga mensahero nga gisugo ni Jefta: “Sa dihang miabot ang mga Israelinhon gikan sa Ehipto, giilog nila ang among kayutaan—gikan sa Lugut sa Arnon paingon sa Suba sa Jabok, ug ngadto sa Suba sa Jordan. Karon, gusto namo nga ibalik ninyo kini kanamo sa malinawon nga paagi.”
14Gipadala na usab ni Jefta ang mga mensahero ngadto sa hari sa mga Amonihanon 15aron sa pagsulti niini nga mensahe: “Wala iloga sa Israel ang yuta sa Moab o sa Ammon. 16Sa dihang mibiya sa Ehipto ang among mga katigulangan, miagi sila sa kamingawan paingon sa Pulang Dagat hangtod nga nakaabot sila sa Kadesh. 17Unya nagpadala sila ug mga mensahero ngadto sa hari sa Edom aron sa paghangyo nga tugotan sila nga moagi sa yuta sa Edom, apan wala sila tugoti. Mao usab kini ang gihimo sa hari sa Moab kanila. Busa nagpabilin sila sa Kadesh.
18“Unya, mipadayon sila sa paglakaw sa kamingawan. Milibot sila sa Edom ug Moab hangtod nga nakaabot sila sa sidlakang bahin sa Moab. Nagkampo sila sa Lugut sa Arnon, apan wala sila motabok sa suba tungod kay mao kadto ang utlanan sa Moab.
19“Unya nagpadala silag mga mensahero kang Sihon nga hari sa mga Amorihanon (nga naghari sa Heshbon) aron sa paghangyo kaniya nga tugotan silang moagi sa iyang yuta aron makaabot sila sa ilang dapit. 20Apan wala mosalig si Sihon kanila. Gitigom hinuon niya ang iyang mga sundalo didto sa Jahaz ug gisulong ang mga Israelinhon. 21Apan gipapildi sila sa Ginoo, ang Dios sa Israel. Busa gisakop sa mga Israelinhon ang tanang kayutaan sa mga Amorihanon nga nagpuyo didto— 22gikan sa Lugut sa Arnon hangtod sa Suba sa Jabok, ug gikan usab sa kamingawan hangtod sa Suba sa Jordan.
23“Ang Ginoo, ang Dios sa Israel, mao ang nagaabog sa mga Amorihanon aron ihatag ang kayutaan ngadto sa mga Israelinhon. Apan karon buot ninyo kining kuhaon? 24Angkona ninyo ang gihatag kaninyo ni Kemosh nga inyong dios. Ug angkonon usab namo ang tanang gihatag kanamo sa Ginoo nga among Dios. 25Mas maayo ka pa ba kay sa hari sa Moab nga si Balak nga anak ni Zipor? Wala gayod siya sukad makig-away sa Israel. Dili ba? 26Mga 300 na ka tuig nga nagpuyo ang mga Israelinhon sa Heshbon, Aroer, ug sa mga lungsod libot niini, ug sa mga lungsod sa daplin sa Lugut sa Arnon. Nganong karon lang kamo nakahunahuna sa pagkuha niini? 27Wala kamiy daotang gihimo kaninyo. Kamo hinuon ang naghimog daotan sa inyong pagpakiggira kanamo. Ang Ginoo mao ang mohukom kon kinsa ang husto kanato.”
28Apan wala gayod tagda sa hari sa mga Amonihanon ang mensahe nga gipadala ni Jefta.
29Unya, gigamhan si Jefta sa Espiritu sa Ginoo. Gilatas niya ang Gilead ug ang Manase aron sa pagtigom ug mga sundalo. Pagkahuman, mibalik siya sa Mizpa nga sakop sa Gilead. Ug gikan didto, gisulong niya ang mga Amonihanon. 30Nanumpa si Jefta sa Ginoo, “Kon ipapildi mo gayod kanako kining mga Amonihanon, 31ang unang mogawas sa akong balay aron sa pagtagbo kanako inig-uli ko nga madaogon, ihalad ko ingon nga halad nga sinunog diha kanimo.”
32Gisulong ni Jefta ang mga Amonihanon ug gipadaog siya sa Ginoo. 33Daghang nangamatay nga mga Amonihanon ug nasakop nila ni Jefta ang 20 ka mga lungsod gikan sa Aroer paingon sa palibot sa Minit hangtod sa Abel Keramim.
Ang Anak ni Jefta
34Mipauli si Jefta sa iyang pinuy-anan sa Mizpa, ug gitagbo siya sa iyang anak nga babaye nga nagsayaw samtang nagtukar ug tamborin. Bugtong siyang anak ni Jefta. 35Pagkakita ni Jefta kaniya, gigisi ni Jefta ang iyang bisti tungod sa kasubo, ug miingon, “Anak ko, gihatagan mo gayod ako ug dakong kasubo! Nanumpa ako sa Ginoo nga ihalad ko kaniya ang unang motagbo kanako karon, ug dili ko kini mabakwi!”
36Mitubag ang anak ni Jefta, “Tay, nanumpa ka sa Ginoo, busa buhata kanako ang gisaad mo nga imong buhaton, kay gipadaog man kamo sa Ginoo sa inyong pagpakiggira sa mga Amonihanon. 37Apan may ihangyo lang ako kanimo: hatagi ako ug duha ka bulan nga makasuroy-suroy sa kabukiran aron sa pagsubo uban sa akong mga amiga, kay mamatay man ako nga putli pa.” 38Gitugotan siya ni Jefta. Busa sulod sa duha ka bulan didto siya sa kabukiran uban sa iyang mga amiga aron sa pagsubo tungod kay mamatay siya nga putli pa. 39Human sa duha ka bulan, mibalik siya sa iyang amahan. Gituman ni Jefta ang iyang gipanumpa sa Ginoo ug namatay ang iyang anak nga usa ka putli. Sukad niadto, nabatasan na sa Israel 40nga sa matag tuig, molakaw ang mga dalaga sa Israel ug magsubo sulod sa upat ka adlaw isip paghinumdom alang sa anak ni Jefta.
1Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valour, and he was the son of an harlot: and Gilead begat Jephthah.11.1 Jephthah: Gr. 4¶ And it came to pass in process of time, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.11.4 in process…: Heb. after days 5And it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob: 6And they said unto Jephthah, Come, and be our captain, that we may fight with the children of Ammon. 7And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and expel me out of my father’s house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress? 8And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore we turn again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight against the children of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead. 9And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of Ammon, and the LORD deliver them before me, shall I be your head? 10And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, The LORD be witness between us, if we do not so according to thy words.11.10 witness…: Heb. the hearer between us 11Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and captain over them: and Jephthah uttered all his words before the LORD in Mizpeh.
12¶ And Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come against me to fight in my land? 13And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and unto Jordan: now therefore restore those lands again peaceably. 14And Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon: 15And said unto him, Thus saith Jephthah, Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon: 16But when Israel came up from Egypt, and walked through the wilderness unto the Red sea, and came to Kadesh; 17Then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land: but the king of Edom would not hearken thereto. And in like manner they sent unto the king of Moab: but he would not consent: and Israel abode in Kadesh. 18Then they went along through the wilderness, and compassed the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, but came not within the border of Moab: for Arnon was the border of Moab. 19And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land into my place. 20But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his coast: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel. 21And the LORD God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country. 22And they possessed all the coasts of the Amorites, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto Jordan. 23So now the LORD God of Israel hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess it? 24Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever the LORD our God shall drive out from before us, them will we possess. 25And now art thou any thing better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them, 26While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and her towns, and in Aroer and her towns, and in all the cities that be along by the coasts of Arnon, three hundred years? why therefore did ye not recover them within that time? 27Wherefore I have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: the LORD the Judge be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon. 28Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him.
29¶ Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon. 30And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands, 31Then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.11.31 whatsoever…: Heb. that which cometh forth, which shall come forth11.31 and…: or, or I will offer it, etc
32¶ So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and the LORD delivered them into his hands. 33And he smote them from Aroer, even till thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.11.33 the plain: or, Abel
34¶ And Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.11.34 beside…: or, he had not of his own either son or daughter: Heb. of himself 35And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back. 36And she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the LORD, do to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as the LORD hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of Ammon. 37And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my fellows.11.37 go up…: Heb. go and go down 38And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains. 39And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew no man.
