Elogio de la sabiduría
1Hay minas de donde se saca la plata
y lugares donde se refina el oro.
2El hierro se extrae de la tierra;
el cobre, de la piedra fundida.
3El minero ha puesto fin a las tinieblas:
hurga en los rincones más apartados;
busca piedras en la más densa oscuridad.
4Lejos de la gente
cava túneles en lugares donde nadie ha estado;
lejos de la gente
se balancea en el aire.
5La tierra, de la cual se extrae su sustento,
es transformada en su interior como con fuego.
6De sus rocas se obtienen zafiros,
y en el polvo se encuentra oro.
7No hay ave de rapiña que conozca ese escondrijo
ni ojo de halcón que lo haya descubierto.
8Ninguna bestia soberbia ha puesto allí su pata;
tampoco merodean allí los leones.
9La mano del minero ataca la dura piedra
y pone al descubierto la raíz de las montañas.
10Abre túneles en la roca
y sus ojos contemplan todos sus tesoros.

y trae a la luz cosas ocultas.
12Pero ¿dónde se halla la sabiduría?
¿Dónde habita la inteligencia?
13Nadie sabe lo que ella vale,
pues no se encuentra en la tierra de los vivientes.
14«Aquí no está», dice el abismo;
«Aquí tampoco», responde el mar.
15No se compra con el oro más fino
ni su precio se calcula en plata.
16No se compra con oro refinado,28:16 oro refinado; Lit. oro de Ofir.
ni con precioso ónice ni zafiros.
17Ni el oro ni el cristal se comparan con ella;
tampoco se cambia por áureas joyas.
18¡Para qué mencionar el coral y el jaspe!
¡La sabiduría vale más que los rubíes!
19El rubí de Cus no se le iguala,
ni es posible comprarla con oro puro.
20¿De dónde, pues, viene la sabiduría?
¿Dónde habita la inteligencia?
21Se esconde de los ojos de toda criatura;
¡hasta de las aves del cielo se oculta!
22El abismo destructor y la muerte afirman:
«Algo acerca de su fama llegó a nuestros oídos».
23Solo Dios sabe llegar hasta ella;
solo él sabe dónde habita.
24Porque él puede ver los confines de la tierra;
ve todo lo que hay bajo los cielos.
25Cuando él establecía la fuerza del viento
y determinaba el volumen de las aguas,
26cuando dictaba el estatuto para las lluvias
y la ruta de las tormentas,
27miró entonces a la sabiduría y ponderó su valor;
la puso a prueba y la confirmó.
28Y dijo a los mortales:
«Temer al Señor: ¡eso es sabiduría!
Apartarse del mal: ¡eso es inteligencia!».
The Place Where Wisdom Is Found Is Explained
1There are mines where silver is found.
There are places where gold is purified.
2Iron is taken out of the earth.
Copper is melted down from ore.
3Human beings light up the darkness.
They search for ore in the deepest pits.
They look for it in the blackest darkness.
4Far from where people live they cut a tunnel.
They do it in places where other people don’t go.
Far away from people they swing back and forth on ropes.
5Food grows on the surface of the earth.
But far below, the earth is changed as if by fire.
6Lapis lazuli is taken from the rocky earth.
Its dust contains nuggets of gold.
7No bird knows that hidden path.
No falcon’s eye has seen it.
8Proud animals don’t walk on it.
Lions don’t prowl there.
9Human hands attack the hardest rock.
Their strong hands uncover the base of the mountains.
10They tunnel through the rock.
Their eyes see all its treasures.
11They search the places where the rivers begin.
They bring hidden things out into the light.
12But where can wisdom be found?
Where does understanding live?
13No human being understands how much it’s worth.
It can’t be found anywhere in the world.
14The ocean says, “It’s not in me.”
The sea says, “It’s not here either.”
15It can’t be bought with the finest gold.
Its price can’t be weighed out in silver.
16It can’t be bought with gold from Ophir.
It can’t be bought with priceless onyx or lapis lazuli.
17Gold or crystal can’t compare with it.
It can’t be bought with jewels made of gold.
18Don’t bother to talk about coral and jasper.
Wisdom is worth far more than rubies.
19A topaz from Cush can’t compare with it.
It can’t be bought with the purest gold.
20So where does wisdom come from?
Where does understanding live?
21It’s hidden from the eyes of every living thing.
Even the birds in the sky can’t find it.
22Death and the Grave say,
“Only reports about it have reached our ears.”
23But God understands the way to it.
He is the only one who knows where it lives.
24He sees from one end of the earth to the other.
He views everything in the world.
25He made the mighty wind.
He measured out the waters.
26He gave orders for the rain to fall.
He made paths for the thunderstorms.
27Then he looked at wisdom and set its price.
He established it and tested it.
28He said to human beings,
“Have respect for the Lord. That will prove you are wise.
Avoid evil. That will show you have understanding.”
