Vengeance on the Midianites
1The Lord said to Moses, 2“Take vengeance on the Midianites for the Israelites. After that, you will be gathered to your people.”
3So Moses said to the people, “Arm some of your men to go to war against the Midianites so that they may carry out the Lord’s vengeance on them. 4Send into battle a thousand men from each of the tribes of Israel.” 5So twelve thousand men armed for battle, a thousand from each tribe, were supplied from the clans of Israel. 6Moses sent them into battle, a thousand from each tribe, along with Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, who took with him articles from the sanctuary and the trumpets for signaling.
7They fought against Midian, as the Lord commanded Moses, and killed every man. 8Among their victims were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba—the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword. 9The Israelites captured the Midianite women and children and took all the Midianite herds, flocks and goods as plunder. 10They burned all the towns where the Midianites had settled, as well as all their camps. 11They took all the plunder and spoils, including the people and animals, 12and brought the captives, spoils and plunder to Moses and Eleazar the priest and the Israelite assembly at their camp on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan across from Jericho.
13Moses, Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the community went to meet them outside the camp. 14Moses was angry with the officers of the army—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—who returned from the battle.
15“Have you allowed all the women to live?” he asked them. 16“They were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice and enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the Lord in the Peor incident, so that a plague struck the Lord’s people. 17Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, 18but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.
19“Anyone who has killed someone or touched someone who was killed must stay outside the camp seven days. On the third and seventh days you must purify yourselves and your captives. 20Purify every garment as well as everything made of leather, goat hair or wood.”
21Then Eleazar the priest said to the soldiers who had gone into battle, “This is what is required by the law that the Lord gave Moses: 22Gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, lead 23and anything else that can withstand fire must be put through the fire, and then it will be clean. But it must also be purified with the water of cleansing. And whatever cannot withstand fire must be put through that water. 24On the seventh day wash your clothes and you will be clean. Then you may come into the camp.”
Dividing the Spoils
25The Lord said to Moses, 26“You and Eleazar the priest and the family heads of the community are to count all the people and animals that were captured. 27Divide the spoils equally between the soldiers who took part in the battle and the rest of the community. 28From the soldiers who fought in the battle, set apart as tribute for the Lord one out of every five hundred, whether people, cattle, donkeys or sheep. 29Take this tribute from their half share and give it to Eleazar the priest as the Lord’s part. 30From the Israelites’ half, select one out of every fifty, whether people, cattle, donkeys, sheep or other animals. Give them to the Levites, who are responsible for the care of the Lord’s tabernacle.” 31So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the Lord commanded Moses.
32The plunder remaining from the spoils that the soldiers took was 675,000 sheep, 3372,000 cattle, 3461,000 donkeys 35and 32,000 women who had never slept with a man.
36The half share of those who fought in the battle was:
337,500 sheep, 37of which the tribute for the Lord was 675;
3836,000 cattle, of which the tribute for the Lord was 72;
3930,500 donkeys, of which the tribute for the Lord was 61;
4016,000 people, of whom the tribute for the Lord was 32.
41Moses gave the tribute to Eleazar the priest as the Lord’s part, as the Lord commanded Moses.
42The half belonging to the Israelites, which Moses set apart from that of the fighting men— 43the community’s half—was 337,500 sheep, 4436,000 cattle, 4530,500 donkeys 46and 16,000 people. 47From the Israelites’ half, Moses selected one out of every fifty people and animals, as the Lord commanded him, and gave them to the Levites, who were responsible for the care of the Lord’s tabernacle.
48Then the officers who were over the units of the army—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—went to Moses 49and said to him, “Your servants have counted the soldiers under our command, and not one is missing. 50So we have brought as an offering to the Lord the gold articles each of us acquired—armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings and necklaces—to make atonement for ourselves before the Lord.”
51Moses and Eleazar the priest accepted from them the gold—all the crafted articles. 52All the gold from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds that Moses and Eleazar presented as a gift to the Lord weighed 16,750 shekels.31:52 That is, about 420 pounds or about 190 kilograms 53Each soldier had taken plunder for himself. 54Moses and Eleazar the priest accepted the gold from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds and brought it into the tent of meeting as a memorial for the Israelites before the Lord.
Guerra contra Madián
1El Señor dijo a Moisés: 2«Antes de reunirte con tus antepasados, en nombre de tu pueblo, tienes que vengarte de los madianitas».
3Moisés se dirigió al pueblo y dijo: «Preparen a algunos de sus hombres para la guerra contra Madián. Vamos a descargar sobre ellos la venganza del Señor. 4Que cada una de las tribus de Israel envíe mil hombres a la guerra».
5Los escuadrones de Israel proveyeron mil hombres por cada tribu, con lo que se reunieron doce mil hombres armados para la guerra. 6Moisés envió a la guerra a los mil hombres de cada tribu. Con ellos iba Finés, hijo del sacerdote Eleazar, quien tenía a su cargo los utensilios del santuario y las trompetas que darían la señal de ataque.
7Tal como el Señor se lo había ordenado a Moisés, los israelitas entraron en batalla contra Madián y mataron a todos los varones. 8Pasaron a espada a Eví, Requen, Zur, Hur y Reba, que eran los cinco reyes de Madián, y también a Balán, hijo de Beor. 9Capturaron a las mujeres y a los niños de los madianitas, y tomaron como botín de guerra todo su ganado, rebaños y bienes. 10A todas las ciudades y campamentos donde vivían los madianitas les prendieron fuego, 11y se apoderaron de gente y de animales. Todos los despojos y el botín 12se los llevaron a Moisés y al sacerdote Eleazar, y a toda la comunidad israelita. A los prisioneros, el botín y los despojos los llevaron hasta el campamento que estaba en las llanuras de Moab, cerca del Jordán, a la altura de Jericó.
13Moisés y el sacerdote Eleazar y todos los líderes de la comunidad salieron a recibirlos fuera del campamento. 14Moisés estaba furioso con los comandantes de mil y de cien soldados que regresaban de la batalla. 15«¿Cómo es que dejaron con vida a las mujeres? —les preguntó—. 16¡Si fueron ellas las que, aconsejadas por Balán, hicieron que los israelitas traicionaran al Señor en Baal Peor! Por eso una plaga hirió de muerte al pueblo del Señor. 17Maten a todos los niños, y también a todas las mujeres que hayan tenido relaciones sexuales, 18pero quédense con todas las muchachas que jamás las hayan tenido.
Purificación de combatientes y de prisioneros
19»Todos los que hayan matado a alguien o hayan tocado un cadáver, deberán quedarse fuera del campamento durante siete días. Al tercer día y al séptimo, se purificarán ustedes y sus prisioneros. 20También deberán purificar toda la ropa y todo artículo de cuero, de pelo de cabra o de madera».
21El sacerdote Eleazar dijo a los soldados que habían ido a la guerra: «Esto es lo que manda la ley que el Señor entregó a Moisés: 22Oro, plata, bronce, hierro, estaño, plomo 23y todo lo que resista el fuego deberá ser pasado por el fuego para purificarse, pero también deberá limpiarse con las aguas de la purificación. Todo lo que no resista el fuego deberá pasar por las aguas de la purificación. 24Al séptimo día, lavarán ustedes sus vestidos y quedarán purificados. Entonces podrán reintegrarse al campamento».
Reparto del botín
25El Señor dijo a Moisés: 26«Tú y el sacerdote Eleazar y los jefes de las familias patriarcales harán un recuento de toda la gente y de todos los animales capturados. 27Dividirán el botín entre los soldados que fueron a la guerra y el resto de la comunidad. 28A los que fueron a la guerra les exigirás del botín una contribución para mí, el Señor. Tanto de la gente como de los asnos, vacas u ovejas, apartarás uno de cada quinientos. 29Los tomarás de la parte que les tocó a los soldados, y se los darás al sacerdote Eleazar como contribución para mí, el Señor. 30De la parte que les toca a los israelitas, apartarás de la gente uno de cada cincuenta, lo mismo que de los asnos, vacas, ovejas u otros animales, y se los darás a los levitas, pues ellos son los responsables del cuidado del santuario del Señor».
31Moisés y el sacerdote Eleazar hicieron tal como el Señor se lo ordenó a Moisés.
32Sin tomar en cuenta los despojos que tomaron los soldados, el botín fue de seiscientas setenta y cinco mil ovejas, 33setenta y dos mil cabezas de ganado, 34sesenta y un mil asnos 35y treinta y dos mil mujeres que jamás habían tenido relaciones sexuales.
36La mitad fue para los que fueron a la guerra:
Trescientas treinta y siete mil quinientas ovejas, 37de las cuales se entregaron seiscientas setenta y cinco como contribución al Señor.
38Treinta y seis mil vacas, de las cuales se entregaron setenta y dos como contribución al Señor.
39Treinta mil quinientos asnos, de los cuales se entregaron sesenta y uno como contribución al Señor.
40Dieciséis mil mujeres, de las cuales se entregaron treinta y dos como contribución al Señor.
41La parte que correspondía al Señor se la entregó Moisés al sacerdote Eleazar, tal como el Señor se lo había ordenado.
42Del botín que trajeron los soldados, Moisés tomó la mitad que correspondía a los israelitas, 43de modo que la mitad que le tocó a la comunidad fue trescientas treinta y siete mil quinientas ovejas, 44treinta y seis mil vacas, 45treinta mil quinientos asnos 46y dieciséis mil mujeres. 47De la parte que tocó a los israelitas, Moisés tomó una de cada cincuenta personas y uno de cada cincuenta animales, tal como el Señor se lo había ordenado, y todo se lo entregó a los levitas, que eran los responsables del cuidado del santuario del Señor.
La ofrenda de los capitanes
48Entonces los oficiales que estaban a cargo de la tropa, es decir, los comandantes de mil y de cien soldados, se acercaron a Moisés 49y dijeron: «Tus siervos han pasado revista y no falta ninguno de los soldados que estaban bajo nuestras órdenes. 50Por eso hemos traído, como ofrenda al Señor, los artículos de oro que cada uno de nosotros encontró: pulseras, cadenas, anillos, pendientes y collares. Todo esto lo traemos para pedir perdón por nuestro pecado ante el Señor».
51Moisés y el sacerdote Eleazar recibieron todos los artículos de oro. 52Todo el oro que los comandantes de mil y de cien soldados presentaron como contribución al Señor pesó dieciséis mil setecientos cincuenta siclos.31:52 Es decir, aprox. 193 kg. 53Cada soldado había tomado botín para sí mismo. 54Moisés y el sacerdote Eleazar recibieron el oro de manos de los comandantes, luego lo llevaron a la Tienda de reunión para que el Señor tuviera presente a los israelitas.
