Balaam’s First Message
1Balaam said, “Build me seven altars here, and prepare seven bulls and seven rams for me.” 2Balak did as Balaam said, and the two of them offered a bull and a ram on each altar.
3Then Balaam said to Balak, “Stay here beside your offering while I go aside. Perhaps the Lord will come to meet with me. Whatever he reveals to me I will tell you.” Then he went off to a barren height.
4God met with him, and Balaam said, “I have prepared seven altars, and on each altar I have offered a bull and a ram.”
5The Lord put a word in Balaam’s mouth and said, “Go back to Balak and give him this word.”
6So he went back to him and found him standing beside his offering, with all the Moabite officials. 7Then Balaam spoke his message:
“Balak brought me from Aram,
the king of Moab from the eastern mountains.
‘Come,’ he said, ‘curse Jacob for me;
come, denounce Israel.’
8How can I curse
those whom God has not cursed?
How can I denounce
those whom the Lord has not denounced?
9From the rocky peaks I see them,
from the heights I view them.
I see a people who live apart
and do not consider themselves one of the nations.
10Who can count the dust of Jacob
or number even a fourth of Israel?
Let me die the death of the righteous,
and may my final end be like theirs!”
11Balak said to Balaam, “What have you done to me? I brought you to curse my enemies, but you have done nothing but bless them!”
12He answered, “Must I not speak what the Lord puts in my mouth?”
Balaam’s Second Message
13Then Balak said to him, “Come with me to another place where you can see them; you will not see them all but only the outskirts of their camp. And from there, curse them for me.” 14So he took him to the field of Zophim on the top of Pisgah, and there he built seven altars and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.
15Balaam said to Balak, “Stay here beside your offering while I meet with him over there.”
16The Lord met with Balaam and put a word in his mouth and said, “Go back to Balak and give him this word.”
17So he went to him and found him standing beside his offering, with the Moabite officials. Balak asked him, “What did the Lord say?”
18Then he spoke his message:
“Arise, Balak, and listen;
hear me, son of Zippor.
19God is not human, that he should lie,
not a human being, that he should change his mind.
Does he speak and then not act?
Does he promise and not fulfill?
20I have received a command to bless;
he has blessed, and I cannot change it.
21“No misfortune is seen in Jacob,
no misery observed23:21 Or He has not looked on Jacob’s offenses / or on the wrongs found in Israel.
The Lord their God is with them;
the shout of the King is among them.
22God brought them out of Egypt;
they have the strength of a wild ox.
23There is no divination against23:23 Or in Jacob,
no evil omens against23:23 Or in Israel.
It will now be said of Jacob
and of Israel, ‘See what God has done!’
24The people rise like a lioness;
they rouse themselves like a lion
that does not rest till it devours its prey
and drinks the blood of its victims.”
25Then Balak said to Balaam, “Neither curse them at all nor bless them at all!”
26Balaam answered, “Did I not tell you I must do whatever the Lord says?”
Balaam’s Third Message
27Then Balak said to Balaam, “Come, let me take you to another place. Perhaps it will please God to let you curse them for me from there.” 28And Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor, overlooking the wasteland.
29Balaam said, “Build me seven altars here, and prepare seven bulls and seven rams for me.” 30Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.
Primer mensaje de Balán
1Balán dijo a Balac: «Edifícame siete altares en este lugar, y prepárame siete novillos y siete carneros». 2Balac hizo lo que Balán le pidió, y juntos ofrecieron un novillo y un carnero en cada altar.
3Entonces Balán dijo a Balac: «Quédate aquí, al lado de tu holocausto, mientras yo voy a ver si el Señor quiere reunirse conmigo. Luego te comunicaré lo que él me revele». Y se fue a una loma desolada.
4Dios vino a su encuentro y Balán le dijo:
—He preparado siete altares, y en cada altar he ofrecido un novillo y un carnero.
5Entonces el Señor puso su palabra en boca de Balán y le dijo:
—Vuelve adonde está Balac y repítele lo que te voy a decir.
6Balán regresó y encontró a Balac de pie, al lado de su holocausto, en compañía de todos los oficiales de Moab. 7Y Balán pronunció su mensaje:
«De Aram, de las montañas de Oriente,
me trajo Balac, el rey de Moab.
“Ven —me dijo—, maldice por mí a Jacob;
ven, deséale el mal a Israel”.
8Pero ¿cómo podré maldecir
a quien Dios no ha maldecido?
¿Cómo podré desearle el mal
a quien el Señor no se lo desea?
9Desde la cima de las peñas lo veo;
desde las colinas lo contemplo:
es un pueblo que vive apartado,
que no se cuenta entre las naciones.
10¿Quién puede calcular la descendencia de Jacob,
tan numerosa como el polvo,
o contar siquiera la cuarta parte de Israel?
¡Sea mi muerte como la del justo!
¡Sea mi fin semejante al suyo!».
11Entonces Balac reclamó a Balán:
—¿Qué me has hecho? Te traje para que maldijeras a mis enemigos, ¡y resulta que no has hecho más que bendecirlos!
12Pero Balán respondió:
—¿Acaso no debo decir lo que el Señor me pide que diga?
Segundo mensaje de Balán
13Entonces Balac dijo:
—Por favor, ven conmigo a otro lugar. Desde allí podrás ver solo una parte del pueblo, no a todos ellos, y los maldecirás por mí.
14Así que lo llevó al campo de Zofín en la cumbre del monte Pisgá. Allí edificó siete altares, y en cada uno de ellos ofreció un novillo y un carnero.
15Allí Balán dijo a Balac: «Quédate aquí, al lado de tu holocausto, mientras yo voy a reunirme con Dios».
16El Señor se reunió con Balán y puso en boca de este su palabra. Le dijo: «Vuelve adonde está Balac y repite lo que te voy a decir».
17Balán se fue adonde estaba Balac y lo encontró de pie, al lado de su holocausto, en compañía de los oficiales de Moab. Balac le preguntó:
—¿Qué dijo el Señor?
18Entonces Balán pronunció su mensaje:
«Levántate, Balac, y escucha;
óyeme, hijo de Zipor.
19Dios no es un simple mortal
para mentir y cambiar de parecer.
¿Acaso no cumple lo que promete
ni lleva a cabo lo que dice?
20Se me ha ordenado bendecir
y, si eso es lo que Dios quiere,
yo no puedo hacer otra cosa.
21»No se ha visto sufrimiento en el pueblo de Jacob
ni calamidad en Israel.
El Señor su Dios está con ellos;
y entre ellos se le aclama como Rey.
22Dios los sacó de Egipto
con la fuerza de un toro salvaje.
23Contra Jacob no hay hechicería que valga,
ni valen las adivinaciones contra Israel.
De Jacob y de Israel se dirá:
“¡Miren lo que Dios ha hecho!”.
24Un pueblo se alza como leona;
se levanta como león.
No descansará hasta haber devorado su presa
y bebido la sangre de sus víctimas».
25Balac dijo entonces a Balán:
—¡Si no los vas a maldecir, tampoco los bendigas!
26Balán respondió:
—¿Acaso no te advertí que yo repetiría todo lo que el Señor me ordenara decir?
Tercer mensaje de Balán
27Balac dijo a Balán:
—Por favor, ven conmigo, que te llevaré a otro lugar. Tal vez a Dios le parezca bien que los maldigas desde allí.
28Así que llevó a Balán hasta la cumbre del monte Peor, desde donde puede verse el desierto de Jesimón. 29Allí Balán le dijo:
—Edifícame siete altares en este lugar, y prepárame siete novillos y siete carneros.
30Balac hizo lo que Balán pidió y en cada altar ofreció un novillo y un carnero.
