1See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears,3:2 Or when it is made known we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 3All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.
4Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. 5But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. 6No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.
7Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. 8The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. 9No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. 10This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.

11For this is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. 12Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous. 13Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters,3:13 The Greek word for brothers and sisters (adelphoi) refers here to believers, both men and women, as part of God’s family; also in verse 16. if the world hates you. 14We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death. 15Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.
16This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.
19This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: 20If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 21Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God 22and receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him. 23And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. 24The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.
上帝的兒女
1你們看，父上帝何等愛我們，稱我們為祂的兒女！我們也實在是祂的兒女，世人之所以不認識我們，是因為他們不認識父上帝。 2親愛的弟兄姊妹，我們現在是上帝的兒女，將來如何還未顯明。但我們知道，當基督顯現的時候，我們會像祂，因為我們必見到祂的本相。 3凡心存這種盼望的人都會自潔，因為祂是聖潔的。
4人犯罪就是違背上帝的律法，違背上帝的律法就是犯罪。 5你們知道，耶穌降世是為了除掉罪，祂裡面毫無罪惡。 6住在祂裡面的人不會犯罪；不斷犯罪的人既沒見過祂，也不認識祂。
7孩子們，不要受人誘騙，行義的才是義人，正如耶穌是公義的。 8一直犯罪的人是屬魔鬼的，因為魔鬼從起初便犯罪，但上帝兒子的顯現是為了摧毀魔鬼的工作。 9從上帝生的人不會繼續犯罪，因為他裡面有上帝的生命3·9 「上帝的生命」希臘文是「上帝的種子」。。他不能繼續犯罪，因為他是從上帝生的。 10這樣，就可以看出誰是上帝的兒女，誰是魔鬼的兒女。凡不行義、不愛弟兄姊妹的人，都不是上帝的兒女。
彼此相愛
11我們應當彼此相愛，這是你們起初聽見的信息。 12不要步該隱的後塵。他屬於那惡者，殺害了自己的弟弟。他為什麼要殺害自己的弟弟呢？因為他行為邪惡，他弟弟卻秉行公義。
13弟兄姊妹，世人若恨你們，不要驚奇。 14我們因愛弟兄姊妹，便知道自己已經出死入生了。不愛弟兄姊妹的，仍然陷在死亡中。 15恨弟兄姊妹的就是殺人的，你們知道：殺人者裡面沒有永生。 16耶穌為我們捨命，我們由此便知道什麼是愛，我們也理當為弟兄姊妹捨命。 17如果一個豐衣足食的人看見貧窮的弟兄姊妹，卻毫無憐憫之心，怎能說他愛上帝呢？ 18所以，孩子們啊，不要單在言語和口頭上說愛人，總要按真理行出來。
19-20這樣，我們必知道自己屬於真理，即使我們心中自責，也可以在上帝面前安心，因為上帝比我們的心大，祂洞悉一切。
21親愛的弟兄姊妹，我們若能凡事問心無愧，就可以在上帝面前坦然無懼。 22這樣，我們無論向上帝祈求什麼，都必得到，因為我們遵守祂的命令，做祂喜悅的事。 23上帝的命令是：我們要信祂兒子耶穌基督的名，遵照祂的命令彼此相愛。 24遵行上帝命令的人就住在上帝裡面，上帝也住在他裡面。我們藉著上帝賜給我們的聖靈知道：祂住在我們裡面。
