Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness
1Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted4:1 The Greek for tempted can also mean tested. by the devil. 2After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
4Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’4:4 Deut. 8:3”
5Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6“If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:
“ ‘He will command his angels concerning you,
and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’4:6 Psalm 91:11,12”
7Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’4:7 Deut. 6:16”
8Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9“All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”
10Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’4:10 Deut. 6:13”
11Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.
Jesus Begins to Preach
12When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galilee. 13Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali— 14to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah:
15“Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan,
Galilee of the Gentiles—
16the people living in darkness
have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death
a light has dawned.”4:16 Isaiah 9:1,2
17From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”
Jesus Calls His First Disciples
18As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 20At once they left their nets and followed him.
21Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
Jesus Heals the Sick
23Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. 24News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed; and he healed them. 25Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis,4:25 That is, the Ten Cities Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him.
Tentación de Jesús

1Luego el Espíritu llevó a Jesús al desierto para ser tentado por el diablo. 2Después de ayunar cuarenta días y cuarenta noches, tuvo hambre. 3El tentador se acercó y le propuso:
—Si eres el Hijo de Dios, ordena a estas piedras que se conviertan en pan.
4Jesús respondió:
—Escrito está: “No solo de pan vive el hombre, sino de toda palabra que sale de la boca de Dios”.4:4 Dt 8:3.
5Luego el diablo lo llevó a la ciudad santa e hizo que se pusiera de pie sobre la parte más alta del Templo 6y le dijo:
—Si eres el Hijo de Dios, tírate abajo. Pues escrito está:
»“Ordenará que sus ángeles te protejan
y ellos te sostendrán en sus manos
para que no tropieces con piedra alguna”».4:6 Sal 91:11,12.
7—También está escrito: “No pongas a prueba al Señor tu Dios”4:7 Dt 6:16. —contestó Jesús.
8De nuevo el diablo lo llevó a una montaña muy alta. Allí le mostró todos los reinos del mundo y su esplendor. 9Y le dijo:
—Todo esto te daré si te postras y me adoras.
10—¡Vete, Satanás! —dijo Jesús—. Porque escrito está: “Adora al Señor tu Dios y sírvele solamente a él”.4:10 Dt 6:13.
11Entonces el diablo lo dejó y ángeles acudieron a servirle.
Jesús comienza a predicar
12Cuando Jesús oyó que habían encarcelado a Juan, regresó a Galilea. 13Partió de Nazaret y se fue a vivir a Capernaúm, que está junto al lago en la región de Zabulón y de Neftalí, 14para cumplir lo dicho por el profeta Isaías:
15«Tierra de Zabulón y tierra de Neftalí,
desde el Camino del Mar, al otro lado del Jordán,
Galilea de los gentiles;
16el pueblo que habitaba en la oscuridad
ha visto una gran luz;
sobre los que vivían en tierra de sombra de muerte
una luz ha resplandecido».4:16 Is 9:1,2.
17Desde entonces comenzó Jesús a predicar: «Arrepiéntanse, porque el reino de los cielos está cerca».
Jesús llama a sus primeros discípulos

18Mientras caminaba junto al lago de Galilea, Jesús vio a dos hermanos: uno era Simón, llamado Pedro, y el otro, Andrés. Estaban echando la red al lago, pues eran pescadores. 19«Vengan, síganme —dijo Jesús—, y los haré pescadores de hombres». 20Al instante dejaron las redes y lo siguieron.
21Más adelante vio a otros dos hermanos: Santiago y Juan, hijos de Zebedeo, que estaban con su padre en una barca remendando las redes. Jesús los llamó 22y dejaron enseguida la barca y a su padre para seguirlo.
Jesús sana a los enfermos
23Jesús recorría toda Galilea enseñando en las sinagogas, anunciando las buenas noticias del reino y sanando toda enfermedad y dolencia entre la gente. 24Su fama se extendió por toda Siria y le llevaban todos los que padecían de diversas enfermedades, los que sufrían de dolores graves, los endemoniados, los epilépticos y los paralíticos, y él los sanaba. 25Lo seguían grandes multitudes de Galilea, Decápolis, Jerusalén, Judea y de la región al otro lado del Jordán.
