1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Saviour and of Christ Jesus our hope,
2To Timothy my true son in the faith:
Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
Timothy charged to oppose false teachers
3As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain people not to teach false doctrines any longer 4or to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. Such things promote controversial speculations rather than advancing God’s work – which is by faith. 5The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. 6Some have departed from these and have turned to meaningless talk. 7They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm.
8We know that the law is good if one uses it properly. 9We also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10for the sexually immoral, for those practising homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers – and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine 11that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.
The Lord’s grace to Paul
12I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me trustworthy, appointing me to his service. 13Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. 14The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
15Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners – of whom I am the worst. 16But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life. 17Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
The charge to Timothy renewed
18Timothy, my son, I am giving you this command in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by recalling them you may fight the battle well, 19holding on to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith. 20Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme.

1Te saluda Pablo, apóstol de Cristo Jesús por mandato de Dios nuestro Salvador y de Cristo Jesús, quien nos da confianza en nuestra salvación.
2Esta carta va dirigida a ti, Timoteo, mi verdadero hijo en la fe.
Les pido a Dios el Padre y a Cristo Jesús nuestro Señor que te permitan gozar de su inmerecido amor, de su bondad y de su paz.
Cuidado con los falsos maestros
3Al salir para Macedonia, te encargué que te quedaras en Éfeso. Allí hay unos que dicen ser maestros dando falsas enseñanzas, y te pedí que les ordenaras que dejen de hacerlo. 4Diles que dejen de prestar atención a leyendas y a largas listas de antepasados. Esas cosas provocan discusiones sin sentido. En nada ayudan a la gente a confiar en el plan de Dios. 5Debes hacer esto para que todos amen con un corazón sincero. Que su amor sea el resultado de una conciencia tranquila y de una fe honesta. 6Algunos han dejado de ser así y se han enredado en discusiones inútiles. 7Pretenden ser maestros de la Ley, pero en realidad no saben de qué hablan. Ni ellos mismos entienden lo que con tanta seguridad afirman.
8Ahora bien, sabemos que la Ley es buena si se aplica como es debido. 9Tengamos en cuenta que la Ley no se ha dado para los justos, sino para los desobedientes y rebeldes. Es para los pecadores y los que no creen en Dios. Se aplica a los que no respetan a Dios ni nuestras creencias. La Ley es para los que matan a sus propios padres. Es para los asesinos, 10los que tienen relaciones sexuales prohibidas y los homosexuales. También para los que venden esclavos, los mentirosos y los que juran en falso. Es decir, la Ley es para todos los que están en contra de la correcta enseñanza. 11Y esa enseñanza la hemos recibido a través del glorioso mensaje de la buena noticia que nuestro Dios bendito me ha confiado.
Pablo da gracias al Señor
12Doy gracias al que me fortalece, Cristo Jesús nuestro Señor, pues me consideró digno de confianza al ponerme a su servicio. 13Anteriormente, yo ofendía a Dios, perseguía a los creyentes y los insultaba. Pero Dios fue bueno conmigo, porque en ese momento yo era incrédulo y actuaba por ignorancia. 14Pero el amor de nuestro Señor fue grande. No merezco ese amor, pero él me dio la fe y el amor que hay en Cristo Jesús.
15Este es el mensaje en el que todos deben confiar y aceptar: Cristo Jesús vino al mundo a salvar a los pecadores, de los cuales yo soy el primero. 16Pero precisamente por eso Dios fue bueno conmigo. Él quería que yo, el peor de los pecadores, pudiera experimentar la infinita bondad de Cristo Jesús. De este modo, sirvo de ejemplo para que otros crean en él y reciban la vida eterna. 17Por tanto, al Rey eterno, inmortal, invisible, al único Dios, sea honor y gloria por los siglos de los siglos. Amén.
18Timoteo, tú eres como un hijo para mí. Todo esto que te pido hacer tiene que ver con las profecías que se dijeron acerca de ti. Toma en cuenta esas palabras y pelea la buena batalla, 19no dejes de confiar en Jesús, y actúa siempre bien. Pues hay algunos que no hacen caso a su conciencia, y han dejado de creer en Jesús. 20Mira por ejemplo a Himeneo y Alejandro. Ellos ofendieron a Dios, así que los he entregado a Satanás, para que aprendan la lección.
