Judas Hangs Himself
1Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans how to have Jesus executed. 2So they bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate the governor.
3When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders. 4“I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.”
“What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.”
5So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.
6The chief priests picked up the coins and said, “It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.” 7So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. 8That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day. 9Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel, 10and they used them to buy the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.”27:10 See Zech. 11:12,13; Jer. 19:1-13; 32:6-9.
Jesus Before Pilate
11Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
“You have said so,” Jesus replied.
12When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer. 13Then Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?” 14But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor.
15Now it was the governor’s custom at the festival to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd. 16At that time they had a well-known prisoner whose name was Jesus27:16 Many manuscripts do not have Jesus; also in verse 17. Barabbas. 17So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?” 18For he knew it was out of self-interest that they had handed Jesus over to him.
19While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat, his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him.”
20But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.
21“Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor.
“Barabbas,” they answered.
22“What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?” Pilate asked.
They all answered, “Crucify him!”
23“Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.
But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”
24When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “It is your responsibility!”
25All the people answered, “His blood is on us and on our children!”
26Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.
The Soldiers Mock Jesus
27Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. 28They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said. 30They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. 31After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.
The Crucifixion of Jesus
32As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross. 33They came to a place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). 34There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. 35When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots. 36And sitting down, they kept watch over him there. 37Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews.
38Two rebels were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. 39Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads 40and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!” 41In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42“He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ” 44In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
The Death of Jesus
45From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. 46About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,27:46 Some manuscripts Eloi, Eloi lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).27:46 Psalm 22:1
47When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.”
48Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”
50And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.
51At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split 52and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and27:53 Or tombs, and after Jesus’ resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people.
54When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”
55Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs. 56Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph,27:56 Greek Joses, a variant of Joseph and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.
The Burial of Jesus
57As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. 58Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. 59Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away. 61Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.
The Guard at the Tomb
62The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate. 63“Sir,” they said, “we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’ 64So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first.”
65“Take a guard,” Pilate answered. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.” 66So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard.
Judas se ahorca
1Muy de mañana, todos los jefes de los sacerdotes y los líderes religiosos del pueblo tomaron la decisión de condenar a muerte a Jesús. 2Lo ataron, se lo llevaron y se lo entregaron a Pilato, el gobernador.
3Cuando Judas, el que lo había traicionado, vio que habían condenado a Jesús, sintió remordimiento y devolvió las treinta monedas de plata a los jefes de los sacerdotes y a los líderes religiosos.
4—He pecado —dijo—, porque he entregado a la muerte27:4 muerte. Lit. sangre inocente. a un inocente.
—¿Y eso a nosotros qué nos importa? —respondieron—. ¡Allá tú!
5Entonces Judas arrojó el dinero en el santuario y salió de allí. Luego fue y se ahorcó.
6Los jefes de los sacerdotes recogieron las monedas y dijeron: «La ley no permite echar esto al tesoro, porque es dinero pagado para derramar sangre». 7Así que resolvieron comprar con ese dinero un terreno conocido como Campo del Alfarero, para sepultar allí a los extranjeros. 8Por eso ha sido llamado Campo de Sangre hasta el día de hoy. 9Así se cumplió lo dicho por el profeta Jeremías: «Tomaron las treinta monedas de plata, el precio que el pueblo de Israel había fijado, 10y con ellas compraron el campo del alfarero, como me ordenó el Señor».27:10 Véanse Zac 11:12,13; Jer 19:1-13; 32:6-9.
Jesús ante Pilato
27:11-26 – Mr 15:12-15; Lc 23:2-3,18-25; Jn 18:29–19:16
11Mientras tanto, Jesús compareció ante el gobernador; este le preguntó:
—¿Eres tú el rey de los judíos?
—Tú mismo lo dices —respondió Jesús.
12Al ser acusado por los jefes de los sacerdotes y por los líderes religiosos, Jesús no contestó nada.
13—¿No oyes lo que declaran contra ti? —dijo Pilato.
14Pero Jesús no contestó ni a una sola acusación, por lo que el gobernador se llenó de asombro.
15Ahora bien, durante la fiesta el gobernador acostumbraba a soltar un preso que la gente escogiera. 16Tenían un preso famoso llamado Jesús Barrabás. 17Así que, cuando se reunió la multitud, Pilato preguntó:
—¿A quién quieren que suelte: a Jesús Barrabás o a Jesús, al que llaman Cristo?
18Pilato sabía que habían entregado a Jesús por envidia.
19Mientras Pilato estaba sentado en el tribunal, su esposa le envió el siguiente recado: «No te metas con ese justo, pues, por causa de él, hoy he sufrido mucho en un sueño».
20Pero los jefes de los sacerdotes y los líderes religiosos persuadieron a la multitud para que pidiera a Pilato soltar a Barrabás y ejecutar a Jesús.
21—¿A cuál de los dos quieren que suelte? —preguntó el gobernador.
—A Barrabás —dijeron ellos.
22—¿Y qué voy a hacer con Jesús, al que llaman Cristo? —preguntó Pilato.
—¡Crucifícalo! —respondieron todos.
23Pero él dijo:
—¿Por qué? ¿Qué crimen ha cometido?
Pero ellos gritaban aún más fuerte:
—¡Crucifícalo!
24Cuando Pilato vio que no conseguía nada, sino que más bien se estaba formando un tumulto, pidió agua y se lavó las manos delante de la gente.
—Soy inocente de la muerte27:24 muerte. Lit. sangre. de este hombre —dijo—. ¡Allá ustedes!
25—¡Que la culpa de su muerte27:25 la culpa de su muerte. Lit. que su sangre caiga sobre nosotros. caiga sobre nosotros y sobre nuestros hijos! —contestó todo el pueblo.
26Entonces soltó a Barrabás; pero a Jesús lo mandó azotar y lo entregó para que lo crucificaran.
Los soldados se burlan de Jesús
27:27-31 – Mr 15:16-20
27Los soldados del gobernador llevaron a Jesús al palacio27:27 palacio. Lit. pretorio. y reunieron a toda la tropa alrededor de él. 28Le quitaron la ropa y le pusieron un manto color escarlata. 29Luego trenzaron una corona de espinas y se la colocaron en la cabeza; en la mano derecha le pusieron una vara. Arrodillándose delante de él, se burlaban diciendo:
—¡Viva el rey de los judíos!
30También lo escupían y con la vara golpeaban su cabeza. 31Después de burlarse de él, le quitaron el manto, le pusieron su propia ropa y se lo llevaron para crucificarlo.
La crucifixión
27:33-44 – Mr 15:22-32; Lc 23:33-43; Jn 19:17-24
32Al salir, encontraron a un hombre de Cirene que se llamaba Simón y lo obligaron a llevar la cruz. 33Llegaron a un lugar llamado Gólgota, que significa «Lugar de la Calavera». 34Allí dieron a Jesús vino mezclado con hiel; pero después de probarlo, se negó a beberlo. 35Lo crucificaron y repartieron su ropa, echando suertes.27:35 suertes. Var. suertes, para que se cumpliera lo dicho por medio del profeta: «Se repartieron entre ellos mi manto y sobre mi ropa echaron suertes» (Sal 22:18; véase Jn 19:24). 36Y se sentaron a vigilarlo. 37Encima de su cabeza pusieron por escrito la causa de su condena:
este es jesús, el rey de los judíos.
38Con él crucificaron a dos bandidos,27:38 bandidos. Alt. insurgentes; también en v. 44. uno a su derecha y otro a su izquierda. 39Los que pasaban meneaban la cabeza y blasfemaban contra él:
40—Tú que destruyes el Templo y en tres días lo reconstruyes, ¡sálvate a ti mismo! Si eres el Hijo de Dios, ¡baja de la cruz!
41De la misma manera, se burlaban de él los jefes de los sacerdotes, junto con los maestros de la Ley y los líderes religiosos.
42—Salvó a otros —decían—, ¡pero no puede salvarse a sí mismo! ¡Y es el rey de Israel! Que baje ahora de la cruz y así creeremos en él. 43Él confía en Dios; pues que lo libre Dios ahora, si de veras lo quiere. ¿Acaso no dijo: “Yo soy el Hijo de Dios”?
44Así también lo insultaban los bandidos que estaban crucificados con él.
Muerte de Jesús
27:45-56 – Mr 15:31-41; Lc 23:44-49
45Desde el mediodía y hasta las tres de la tarde27:45 Desde … tarde. Lit. Desde la hora sexta hasta la hora novena. toda la tierra quedó en oscuridad. 46Como a las tres de la tarde,27:46 Como … tarde. Lit. Como a la hora novena. Jesús gritó con fuerza:
—Elí, Elí,27:46 Elí, Elí. Var. Eloi, Eloi. ¿lema sabactani? —que significa “Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿por qué me has abandonado?”.27:46 Sal 22:1.
47Cuando lo oyeron, algunos de los que estaban allí dijeron:
—Está llamando a Elías.
48Al instante uno de ellos corrió en busca de una esponja. La empapó en vinagre, la puso en una vara y se la ofreció a Jesús para que bebiera. 49Los demás decían:
—Déjalo, a ver si viene Elías a salvarlo.
50Entonces Jesús volvió a gritar con fuerza y entregó su espíritu.
51En ese momento, la cortina del santuario del Templo se rasgó en dos, de arriba a abajo. La tierra tembló y se partieron las rocas. 52Se abrieron los sepulcros y muchos creyentes que habían muerto resucitaron. 53Salieron de los sepulcros y, después de la resurrección de Jesús, entraron en la ciudad santa y se aparecieron a muchos.
54Cuando el centurión y los que con él estaban custodiando a Jesús vieron el terremoto y todo lo que había sucedido, quedaron aterrados y exclamaron:
—¡Verdaderamente este era el Hijo de Dios!
55Estaban allí, mirando desde lejos, muchas mujeres que habían seguido a Jesús desde Galilea para servirle. 56Entre ellas se encontraban María Magdalena, María la madre de Santiago y de José, y también la madre de los hijos de Zebedeo.
Sepultura de Jesús
27:57-61 – Mr 15:42-47; Lc 23:50-56; Jn 19:38-42
57Al atardecer, llegó un hombre rico de Arimatea, llamado José, que también se había convertido en discípulo de Jesús. 58Se presentó ante Pilato para pedirle el cuerpo de Jesús y Pilato ordenó que se lo dieran. 59José tomó el cuerpo, lo envolvió en una sábana limpia 60y lo puso en un sepulcro nuevo de su propiedad, que había cavado en la roca. Luego hizo rodar una piedra grande a la entrada del sepulcro y se fue. 61Allí estaban, sentadas frente al sepulcro, María Magdalena y la otra María.
La guardia ante el sepulcro
62Al día siguiente, después del día de la preparación, los jefes de los sacerdotes y los fariseos se presentaron ante Pilato.
63—Señor —dijeron—, nosotros recordamos que mientras ese engañador aún vivía, dijo: “A los tres días resucitaré”. 64Por eso, ordene usted que se selle el sepulcro hasta el tercer día, no sea que vengan sus discípulos, se roben el cuerpo y digan al pueblo que ha resucitado. Ese último engaño sería peor que el primero.
65—Llévense una guardia de soldados —ordenó Pilato—, y vayan a asegurar el sepulcro lo mejor que puedan.
66Así que ellos fueron, cerraron el sepulcro con una piedra, lo sellaron y dejaron puesta la guardia.
