Jesus and John the Baptist
1After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.11:1 Greek in their towns
2When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples 3to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”
4Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: 5The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy11:5 The Greek word traditionally translated leprosy was used for various diseases affecting the skin. are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. 6Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”
7As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 8If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces. 9Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10This is the one about whom it is written:
“ ‘I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way before you.’11:10 Mal. 3:1
11Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence,11:12 Or been forcefully advancing and violent people have been raiding it. 13For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. 14And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come. 15Whoever has ears, let them hear.
16“To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:
17“ ‘We played the pipe for you,
and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
and you did not mourn.’
18For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”
Woe on Unrepentant Towns
20Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. 21“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. 23And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.11:23 That is, the realm of the dead For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”
The Father Revealed in the Son
25At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. 26Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.
27“All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
28“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Jesús y Juan el Bautista
11:2-19 – Lc 7:18-35
1Cuando Jesús terminó de dar instrucciones a sus doce discípulos, se fue de allí a enseñar y a predicar en otros pueblos.
2Juan estaba en la cárcel y, al enterarse de lo que Cristo estaba haciendo, envió a sus discípulos a que le preguntaran:
3—¿Eres tú el que ha de venir o debemos esperar a otro?
4Jesús respondió:
—Vayan y cuéntenle a Juan lo que están oyendo y viendo: 5Los ciegos ven, los cojos andan, los que tienen alguna enfermedad en su piel son sanados, los sordos oyen, los muertos resucitan y a los pobres se les anuncian las buenas noticias. 6Dichoso el que no tropieza por causa mía.
7Mientras se iban los discípulos de Juan, Jesús comenzó a hablarle a la multitud acerca de Juan: «¿Qué salieron a ver al desierto? ¿Una caña sacudida por el viento? 8Si no, ¿qué salieron a ver? ¿A un hombre vestido con ropa fina? Claro que no, pues los que usan ropa de lujo están en los palacios de los reyes. 9Entonces, ¿qué salieron a ver? ¿A un profeta? Sí, les digo, y más que profeta. 10Este es de quien está escrito:
»“Yo estoy por enviar a mi mensajero delante de ti,
el cual preparará tu camino”.11:10 Mal 3:1.
11Les aseguro que entre los mortales no se ha levantado nadie más grande que Juan el Bautista; sin embargo, el más pequeño en el reino de los cielos es más grande que él. 12Desde los días de Juan el Bautista hasta ahora, el reino de los cielos ha venido avanzando contra viento y marea, y los que se esfuerzan logran aferrarse a él.11:12 ha venido … aferrarse a él. Alt. sufre violencia y los violentos quieren arrebatarlo. 13Porque todos los Profetas y la Ley profetizaron hasta Juan. 14Y si quieren aceptar mi palabra, Juan es el Elías que había de venir. 15El que tenga oídos, que oiga.
16»¿Con qué puedo comparar a esta generación? Se parece a los niños sentados en la plaza que gritan a los demás:
17»“Tocamos la flauta
y ustedes no bailaron;
cantamos por los muertos
y ustedes no lloraron”.
18»Porque vino Juan que no comía ni bebía y ellos dicen: “Tiene un demonio”. 19Vino el Hijo del hombre, que come y bebe, y dicen: “Este es un glotón y un borracho, amigo de recaudadores de impuestos y de pecadores”. Pero la sabiduría queda demostrada por sus hechos».
Reproches contra ciudades no arrepentidas
11:21-23 – Lc 10:13-15
20Entonces comenzó Jesús a denunciar a las ciudades en que había hecho la mayor parte de sus milagros, porque no se habían arrepentido. 21«¡Ay de ti, Corazín! ¡Ay de ti, Betsaida! Si se hubieran hecho en Tiro y en Sidón los milagros que se hicieron en medio de ustedes, ya hace tiempo que se habrían arrepentido con muchos lamentos.11:21 con muchos lamentos. Lit. en saco y ceniza. 22Pero les digo que en el día del juicio será más tolerable el castigo para Tiro y Sidón que para ustedes. 23Y tú, Capernaúm, ¿acaso serás levantada hasta el cielo? No, sino que descenderás hasta los dominios de la muerte.11:23 los dominios de la muerte. Lit. el Hades. Si los milagros que se hicieron en ti se hubieran hecho en Sodoma, esta habría permanecido hasta el día de hoy. 24Pero digo que en el día del juicio será más tolerable el castigo para Sodoma que para ti».
Descanso para los cansados
11:25-27 – Lc 10:21-22
25En aquel tiempo Jesús dijo: «Te alabo, Padre, Señor del cielo y de la tierra, porque habiendo escondido estas cosas de los sabios e instruidos, se las has revelado a los niños. 26Sí, Padre, porque esa fue tu buena voluntad.
27»Mi Padre me ha entregado todas las cosas. Nadie conoce al Hijo, sino el Padre; nadie conoce al Padre, sino el Hijo y aquel a quien el Hijo quiera revelarlo.
28»Vengan a mí todos ustedes que están cansados y agobiados; yo les daré descanso. 29Carguen con mi yugo y aprendan de mí, pues yo soy apacible y humilde de corazón, y encontrarán descanso para sus almas. 30Porque mi yugo es suave y mi carga es liviana».
