“In my distress I called to the Lord,
and he answered me.
From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help,
and you listened to my cry.
3You hurled me into the depths,
into the very heart of the seas,
and the currents swirled about me;
all your waves and breakers
swept over me.
4I said, ‘I have been banished
from your sight;
yet I will look again
toward your holy temple.’
5The engulfing waters threatened me,2:5 Or waters were at my throat
the deep surrounded me;
seaweed was wrapped around my head.
6To the roots of the mountains I sank down;
the earth beneath barred me in forever.
But you, Lord my God,
brought my life up from the pit.
7“When my life was ebbing away,
I remembered you, Lord,
and my prayer rose to you,
to your holy temple.
8“Those who cling to worthless idols
turn away from God’s love for them.
9But I, with shouts of grateful praise,
will sacrifice to you.
What I have vowed I will make good.
I will say, ‘Salvation comes from the Lord.’ ”
10And the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
Rugăciunea lui Iona
1Iona s‑a rugat Domnului, Dumnezeul său, din pântecul peștelui 2și a zis:
„În strâmtorarea mea L‑am chemat pe Domnul
și El mi‑a răspuns.
Din pântecul Locuinței Morților2 Ebr.: Șeol am strigat după ajutor
și Tu mi‑ai auzit glasul.
3Mă aruncasei în adânc,
în inima mărilor,
și curentul de apă mă învăluise.
Toate talazurile și valurile Tale
treceau peste mine.
4Ziceam: «Sunt alungat
dinaintea ochilor Tăi.
Totuși, mă voi uita din nou
la Templul Tău cel sfânt!»
5Apele mă împresuraseră până la gât,
adâncul mă învăluise,
iar algele se înfășuraseră în jurul capului meu.
6Coborâsem până în străfundurile munților,
și zăvoarele pământului mă încuiaseră pe vecie!
Dar Tu, Doamne, Dumnezeul meu,
mi‑ai scos viața din groapă!
7Când mi se scurgea sufletul din mine,
mi‑am adus aminte de Domnul
și rugăciunea mea a ajuns până la Tine,
în Templul Tău cel sfânt.
8Cei ce onorează idolii deșerți,
și‑au părăsit bunătatea.8 Sau: și‑au părăsit credincioșia.
9Dar eu Îți voi aduce jertfe
cu un strigăt de mulțumire.
Voi împlini ceea ce am jurat!
Mântuirea este a Domnului!“9 Sau: Mântuirea vine de la Domnul.
10Domnul i‑a vorbit peștelui, iar peștele l‑a vărsat pe Iona pe uscat.
