The Day of the Lord
1Dear friends, this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of them as reminders to stimulate you to wholesome thinking. 2I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and the command given by our Lord and Savior through your apostles.
3Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. 4They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” 5But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water. 6By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. 7By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.
8But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.3:10 Some manuscripts be burned up
11Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming.3:12 Or as you wait eagerly for the day of God to come That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. 13But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.
14So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. 15Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. 16He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.
17Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position. 18But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.
Cristo tornerà!
1Cari fratelli, questa è già la seconda lettera che vi scrivo. In tutte e due ho cercato di tener desta la vostra mente pura, riportando alla vostra memoria fatti che già conoscete. 2Ripensate alle parole già dette dai santi profeti e da noi apostoli, da noi che vi abbiamo portato il comandamento del nostro Signore e Salvatore!
3-4Per prima cosa, voglio ricordarvi che negli ultimi tempi si faranno avanti degli individui cinici e beffardi, uomini che vivono secondo i loro desideri malvagi e diranno: «Dovʼè dunque questo Gesù che, secondo voi, aveva promesso di ritornare? Non verrà mai, perché, a memoria dʼuomo, tutte le cose sono rimaste esattamente comʼerano fin dai primi giorni della creazione!»
5-6Costoro, di proposito, dimenticano questo fatto e cioè che, molto tempo fa, per mezzo della sua parola, Dio creò i cieli e la terra. Il Signore separò la terra dallʼacqua da cui rimase circondata. Ma, causa lʼincredulità degli uomini, il mondo da allora finì sommerso. 7Anche i cieli e la terra di adesso sono conservati per mezzo della parola di Dio, ma sono riservati al fuoco del giorno del giudizio, giorno in cui saranno distrutti gli uomini malvagi.
8Non dimenticate, miei cari fratelli, che per il Signore un giorno è come mille anni, e mille anni sono come un solo giorno. 9Non è vero, come pensano certuni, che il Signore tardi a ritornare, come ha promesso. Piuttosto, egli è paziente con voi e aspetta, perché non vuole che nessuno si perda, perciò concede a tutti i peccatori il tempo di pentirsi. 10Il giorno del Signore, però, è in arrivo, inaspettato come un ladro. Allora i cieli, stridendo, spariranno; gli astri del cielo si dissolveranno nel fuoco; e la terra, con tutto ciò che contiene, sarà bruciata. 11Dato che tutte le cose che ci circondano devono scomparire, pensate un poʼ in che modo santo e pio dovreste vivere! 12Dovete aspettare con impazienza quel giorno e fare in modo che venga presto. Quel giorno, i cieli si consumeranno nel fuoco e gli astri del cielo si fonderanno nel calore! 13Ma, secondo la promessa di Dio, noi aspettiamo nuovi cieli e nuova terra, dove non ci sarà che giustizia.
14Perciò, carissimi fratelli, mentre siamo in attesa di questi fatti e del ritorno di Cristo, fate di tutto per vivere in pace e senza peccare, affinché, al suo ritorno, egli sia contento di voi.
15-16E tenete sempre presente il motivo per cui Dio sta aspettando: per darci il tempo di comunicare il suo messaggio di salvezza a tutti gli altri. Anche il nostro caro fratello Paolo ve ne ha parlato in molte sue lettere, servendosi di tutta la saggezza che Dio gli ha dato. In esse ci sono certi punti difficili da capire, che gli ignoranti e glʼinstabili interpretano in modo sbagliato, proprio come fanno con altre parti delle Scritture. Ma, così facendo, si preparano la strada per la perdizione con le proprie mani.
17Vi avviso in tempo cari fratelli, state attenti a non lasciarvi sviare dagli errori di questi uomini malvagi, perdendo così la fermezza della vostra fede. 18Crescete, invece, nella grazia e nella conoscenza di Gesù Cristo, nostro Signore e Salvatore. A lui sia tutta la gloria e lʼonore, ora e sempre. Amen. Pietro.
