The Gibeonite Deception
1Now when all the kings west of the Jordan heard about these things—the kings in the hill country, in the western foothills, and along the entire coast of the Mediterranean Sea as far as Lebanon (the kings of the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites)— 2they came together to wage war against Joshua and Israel.
3However, when the people of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai, 4they resorted to a ruse: They went as a delegation whose donkeys were loaded9:4 Most Hebrew manuscripts; some Hebrew manuscripts, Vulgate and Syriac (see also Septuagint) They prepared provisions and loaded their donkeys with worn-out sacks and old wineskins, cracked and mended. 5They put worn and patched sandals on their feet and wore old clothes. All the bread of their food supply was dry and moldy. 6Then they went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and the Israelites, “We have come from a distant country; make a treaty with us.”
7The Israelites said to the Hivites, “But perhaps you live near us, so how can we make a treaty with you?”
8“We are your servants,” they said to Joshua.
But Joshua asked, “Who are you and where do you come from?”
9They answered: “Your servants have come from a very distant country because of the fame of the Lord your God. For we have heard reports of him: all that he did in Egypt, 10and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan—Sihon king of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth. 11And our elders and all those living in our country said to us, ‘Take provisions for your journey; go and meet them and say to them, “We are your servants; make a treaty with us.” ’ 12This bread of ours was warm when we packed it at home on the day we left to come to you. But now see how dry and moldy it is. 13And these wineskins that we filled were new, but see how cracked they are. And our clothes and sandals are worn out by the very long journey.”
14The Israelites sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the Lord. 15Then Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the leaders of the assembly ratified it by oath.
16Three days after they made the treaty with the Gibeonites, the Israelites heard that they were neighbors, living near them. 17So the Israelites set out and on the third day came to their cities: Gibeon, Kephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath Jearim. 18But the Israelites did not attack them, because the leaders of the assembly had sworn an oath to them by the Lord, the God of Israel.
The whole assembly grumbled against the leaders, 19but all the leaders answered, “We have given them our oath by the Lord, the God of Israel, and we cannot touch them now. 20This is what we will do to them: We will let them live, so that God’s wrath will not fall on us for breaking the oath we swore to them.” 21They continued, “Let them live, but let them be woodcutters and water carriers in the service of the whole assembly.” So the leaders’ promise to them was kept.
22Then Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said, “Why did you deceive us by saying, ‘We live a long way from you,’ while actually you live near us? 23You are now under a curse: You will never be released from service as woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God.”
24They answered Joshua, “Your servants were clearly told how the Lord your God had commanded his servant Moses to give you the whole land and to wipe out all its inhabitants from before you. So we feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we did this. 25We are now in your hands. Do to us whatever seems good and right to you.”
26So Joshua saved them from the Israelites, and they did not kill them. 27That day he made the Gibeonites woodcutters and water carriers for the assembly, to provide for the needs of the altar of the Lord at the place the Lord would choose. And that is what they are to this day.

1Había reyes que vivían en el lado occidental del Jordán, en la montaña, en las llanuras y a lo largo de la costa del Mediterráneo, hasta el Líbano: hititas, amorreos, cananeos, ferezeos, heveos y jebuseos. Cuando estos monarcas se enteraron de lo sucedido, 2se aliaron bajo un solo mando para hacer frente a Josué y a los israelitas.
3Los gabaonitas, al darse cuenta de cómo Josué había tratado a las ciudades de Jericó y de Hai, 4maquinaron un plan. Enviaron mensajeros, cuyos asnos llevaban costales viejos y odres para el vino, rotos y remendados. 5Iban vestidos con ropa vieja y tenían sandalias gastadas y remendadas. El pan que llevaban para comer estaba duro y hecho migas. 6Fueron al campamento de Guilgal donde estaba Josué y dijeron a él y a los israelitas:
—Venimos de un país muy lejano. Queremos hacer un tratado con ustedes.
7Los israelitas replicaron:
—Tal vez ustedes son de por acá y en ese caso, no podemos hacer ningún tratado con ustedes.
8Ellos dijeron a Josué:
—Nosotros estamos dispuestos a servirles.
Y Josué preguntó:
—¿Quiénes son ustedes y de dónde vienen?
9Ellos respondieron:
—Nosotros somos sus siervos y hemos venido de un país muy distante, hasta donde ha llegado la fama del Señor su Dios. Nos hemos enterado de todo lo que él hizo en Egipto 10y de lo que hizo a los dos reyes amorreos al este del Jordán: Sijón, rey de Hesbón, y Og, rey de Basán, el que residía en Astarot. 11Por eso los habitantes de nuestro país, junto con nuestros jefes, nos dijeron: “Tomen provisiones para el largo viaje, vayan a su encuentro y díganles: ‘Deseamos ser siervos de ustedes; hagamos un tratado’ ”. 12Cuando salimos para acá, nuestro pan estaba fresco y caliente, pero ahora, ¡mírenlo! Está duro y hecho migas. 13Estos odres estaban nuevos y repletos de vino, y ahora, tal como pueden ver, están todos rotos. Y nuestra ropa y sandalias están gastadas por el largo viaje.
14Los hombres de Israel participaron de las provisiones de los gabaonitas, pero no consultaron al Señor. 15Entonces Josué hizo con ellos un tratado de ayuda mutua y se comprometió a perdonarles la vida. Y los jefes israelitas ratificaron el tratado.
16Tres días después de haber hecho el tratado con los gabaonitas, los israelitas se enteraron de que eran sus vecinos y vivían en las cercanías. 17Por eso se pusieron en marcha y al tercer día llegaron a sus ciudades: Gabaón, Cafira, Berot y Quiriat Yearín. 18Pero los israelitas no los atacaron porque los jefes de la comunidad les habían jurado en nombre del Señor, Dios de Israel, perdonarles la vida. Y aunque toda la comunidad se quejó contra sus jefes, 19estos contestaron:
—Hemos hecho un juramento en nombre del Señor, Dios de Israel, y no podemos hacerles ningún daño. 20Esto es lo que haremos con ellos: les perdonaremos la vida, para que no caiga sobre nosotros el castigo divino por quebrantar el juramento que hicimos.
21Luego añadieron:
—Se les permitirá vivir, pero a cambio de ser los leñadores y aguateros de la comunidad.
De ese modo, los jefes de la comunidad cumplieron su promesa.
22Entonces Josué llamó a los gabaonitas y les reclamó:
—¿Por qué nos engañaron con el cuento de que eran de tierras lejanas, cuando en verdad son nuestros vecinos? 23A partir de ahora, esta será su maldición: serán por siempre sirvientes del templo de mi Dios, responsables de cortar la leña y de acarrear el agua.
24Los gabaonitas contestaron:
—Nosotros, servidores suyos, fuimos bien informados de que el Señor su Dios ordenó a su siervo Moisés que les diera toda esta tierra y que destruyera a todos sus habitantes. Temimos tanto por nuestra vida que decidimos hacer lo que ya saben. 25Estamos a merced de ustedes. Hagan con nosotros lo que les parezca justo y bueno.
26Así salvó Josué a los gabaonitas de morir a manos del pueblo de Israel. 27Ese mismo día Josué los hizo leñadores y aguateros de la asamblea israelita, especialmente del altar del Señor que está en el lugar que él mismo eligió. Y así han permanecido hasta el día de hoy.
