Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand
1Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), 2and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick. 3Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples. 4The Jewish Passover Festival was near.
5When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” 6He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.
7Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages6:7 Greek take two hundred denarii to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”
8Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, 9“Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”
10Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). 11Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.
12When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.
14After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.” 15Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.
Jesus Walks on the Water
16When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, 17where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. 18A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. 19When they had rowed about three or four miles,6:19 Or about 5 or 6 kilometers they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were frightened. 20But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.” 21Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.
22The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone. 23Then some boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.
Jesus the Bread of Life
25When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”
26Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”
28Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”
29Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”
30So they asked him, “What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? 31Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’6:31 Exodus 16:4; Neh. 9:15; Psalm 78:24,25”
32Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
34“Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”
35Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 36But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. 39And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”
41At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”
43“Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. 44“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. 45It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’6:45 Isaiah 54:13 Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. 46No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. 47Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life. 48I am the bread of life. 49Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. 50But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. 51I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”
52Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
53Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. 55For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. 57Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” 59He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
Many Disciples Desert Jesus
60On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”
61Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you? 62Then what if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! 63The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit6:63 Or are Spirit; or are spirit and life. 64Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. 65He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”
66From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.
67“You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.
68Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”
70Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!” 71(He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)
Jesús alimenta a cinco mil personas

1Algún tiempo después, Jesús se fue a la otra orilla del lago de Galilea o de Tiberíades. 2Y mucha gente lo seguía porque veían las señales que hacía en los enfermos. 3Entonces subió Jesús a una colina y se sentó con sus discípulos. 4Faltaba muy poco tiempo para la fiesta judía de la Pascua.
5Cuando Jesús alzó la vista y vio una gran multitud que venía hacia él, dijo a Felipe:
—¿Dónde vamos a comprar pan para que coma esta gente?
6Esto lo dijo solo para ponerlo a prueba, porque él ya sabía lo que iba a hacer.
7—Ni con el salario de más de seis meses de trabajo6:7 el salario … trabajo. Lit. doscientos denarios. podríamos comprar suficiente pan para darle un pedazo a cada uno —respondió Felipe.
8Otro de sus discípulos, Andrés, que era hermano de Simón Pedro, le dijo:
9—Aquí hay un muchacho que tiene cinco panes de cebada y dos pescados, pero ¿qué es esto para tanta gente?
10—Hagan que se sienten todos —ordenó Jesús.
En ese lugar había mucha hierba, así que se sentaron. Los varones adultos eran como cinco mil. 11Jesús tomó entonces los panes, dio gracias y distribuyó a los que estaban sentados todo lo que quisieron. Lo mismo hizo con los pescados.
12Una vez que quedaron satisfechos, dijo a sus discípulos:
—Recojan los pedazos que sobraron, para que no se desperdicie nada.
13Así que recogieron los pedazos que habían sobrado de los cinco panes de cebada y llenaron doce canastas.
14Al ver la señal milagrosa que Jesús había realizado, la gente comenzó a decir: «En verdad este es el profeta que había de venir al mundo». 15Pero Jesús, dándose cuenta de que querían llevárselo a la fuerza y declararlo rey, se retiró de nuevo a la montaña él solo.
Jesús camina sobre el agua

16Cuando ya anochecía, sus discípulos bajaron al lago, 17subieron a una barca y comenzaron a cruzar el lago en dirección a Capernaúm. Para entonces ya había oscurecido y Jesús todavía no se les había unido. 18Por causa del fuerte viento que soplaba, el lago estaba agitado. 19Habrían remado unos cinco o seis kilómetros6:19 cinco o seis kilómetros. Lit. veinticinco o treinta estadios. cuando vieron que Jesús se acercaba a la barca, caminando sobre el agua, y se asustaron. 20Pero él les dijo: «Soy yo. No tengan miedo». 21Así que se dispusieron a recibirlo a bordo y enseguida la barca llegó a la playa, lugar al que se dirigían.
22Al día siguiente, la multitud que estaba aún en el otro lado del lago se dio cuenta de que los discípulos habían embarcado solos. Lo supieron porque allí había estado una sola barca y Jesús no había entrado en ella con sus discípulos. 23Sin embargo, algunas barcas de Tiberíades se aproximaron al lugar donde la gente había comido el pan después de haber dado gracias el Señor. 24En cuanto la multitud se dio cuenta de que ni Jesús ni sus discípulos estaban allí, subieron a las barcas y se fueron a Capernaúm a buscar a Jesús.
Jesús, el pan de vida
25Cuando lo encontraron al otro lado del lago, le preguntaron:
—Rabí, ¿cuándo llegaste acá?
26Jesús respondió con firmeza:
—Les aseguro que ustedes me buscan no porque han visto señales, sino porque comieron pan hasta llenarse. 27Trabajen, pero no por la comida que es perecedera, sino por la que permanece para vida eterna, la cual les dará el Hijo del hombre. Dios el Padre ha puesto sobre él su sello de aprobación.
28—¿Qué tenemos que hacer para realizar las obras que Dios exige? —le preguntaron.
29—Esto es lo que Dios quiere que hagan: que crean en aquel a quien él envió —respondió Jesús.
30—¿Y qué señal milagrosa harás para que la veamos y te creamos? ¿Qué puedes hacer? —insistieron ellos—. 31Nuestros antepasados comieron el maná en el desierto, como está escrito: “Pan del cielo les dio a comer”.6:31 Éx 16:4; Neh 9:15; Sal 78:24,25.
32—Les aseguro que no fue Moisés el que les dio a ustedes el pan del cielo —afirmó Jesús—. El que da el verdadero pan del cielo es mi Padre. 33El pan de Dios es el que baja del cielo y da vida al mundo.
34—Señor —le pidieron—, danos siempre ese pan.
35—Yo soy el pan de vida —declaró Jesús—. El que a mí viene nunca pasará hambre y el que en mí cree nunca más volverá a tener sed. 36Pero como ya les dije, a pesar de que ustedes me han visto, no creen. 37Todos los que el Padre me da vendrán a mí; y el que a mí viene no lo rechazo. 38Porque he bajado del cielo no para hacer mi voluntad, sino la del que me envió. 39Y esta es la voluntad del que me envió: que yo no pierda nada de lo que él me ha dado, sino que lo resucite en el día final. 40Porque la voluntad de mi Padre es que todo el que ve al Hijo y crea en él tenga vida eterna, y yo lo resucitaré en el día final.
41Entonces los judíos comenzaron a murmurar contra él, porque dijo: «Yo soy el pan que bajó del cielo». 42Y se decían: «¿Acaso no es este Jesús, el hijo de José? ¿No conocemos a su padre y a su madre? ¿Cómo es que sale diciendo: “Yo bajé del cielo”?».
43—Dejen de murmurar —respondió Jesús—. 44Nadie puede venir a mí, si no lo trae el Padre que me envió, y yo lo resucitaré en el día final. 45En los Profetas está escrito: “A todos los instruirá Dios”.6:45 Is 54:13. En efecto, todo el que escucha al Padre y aprende de él viene a mí. 46Al Padre nadie lo ha visto, excepto el que viene de Dios; solo él ha visto al Padre. 47Les aseguro que el que cree tiene vida eterna. 48Yo soy el pan de vida. 49Los antepasados de ustedes comieron el maná en el desierto; sin embargo, murieron. 50Pero este es el pan que baja del cielo; el que come de él no muere. 51Yo soy el pan vivo que bajó del cielo. Si alguno come de este pan, vivirá para siempre. Este pan es mi carne y lo daré para que el mundo viva.
52Los judíos comenzaron a disputar acaloradamente entre sí: «¿Cómo puede este darnos a comer su carne?».
53—Les aseguro —afirmó Jesús— que, si no comen la carne del Hijo del hombre ni beben su sangre, no tienen realmente vida. 54El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre tiene vida eterna, y yo lo resucitaré en el día final. 55Porque mi carne es verdadera comida y mi sangre es verdadera bebida. 56El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre permanece en mí y yo en él. 57Así como me envió el Padre viviente, y yo vivo por el Padre, también el que come de mí vivirá por mí. 58Este es el pan que bajó del cielo. Los antepasados de ustedes comieron maná y murieron, pero el que come de este pan vivirá para siempre.
59Todo esto lo dijo Jesús mientras enseñaba en la sinagoga de Capernaúm.
Muchos discípulos abandonan a Jesús
60Al escucharlo, muchos de sus discípulos exclamaron: «Esta enseñanza es muy difícil; ¿quién puede aceptarla?».
61Jesús, muy consciente de que sus discípulos murmuraban por lo que había dicho, les reprochó:
—¿Esto les causa tropiezo? 62¿Qué tal si vieran al Hijo del hombre subir adonde antes estaba? 63El Espíritu da vida; la carne no vale para nada. Las palabras que les he hablado son espíritu y son vida. 64Sin embargo, hay algunos de ustedes que no creen.
Es que Jesús conocía desde el principio quiénes eran los que no creían y quién era el que iba a traicionarlo. Así que añadió:
65—Por esto les dije que nadie puede venir a mí, a menos que se lo haya concedido el Padre.
66Desde entonces muchos de sus discípulos le volvieron la espalda y ya no andaban con él. 67Así que Jesús preguntó a los doce:
—¿También ustedes quieren marcharse?
68—Señor —contestó Simón Pedro—, ¿a quién iremos? Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna. 69Y nosotros hemos creído, y sabemos que tú eres el Santo de Dios.6:69 el Santo de Dios. Var. el Cristo, el hijo del Dios viviente.
70—¿No los he escogido yo a ustedes doce? —respondió Jesús—. No obstante, uno de ustedes es un diablo.
71Se refería a Judas, hijo de Simón Iscariote, uno de los doce, quien lo iba a traicionar.
