The Helper of Israel
1“Be silent before me, you islands!
Let the nations renew their strength!
Let them come forward and speak;
let us meet together at the place of judgment.
2“Who has stirred up one from the east,
calling him in righteousness to his service41:2 Or east, / whom victory meets at every step?
He hands nations over to him
and subdues kings before him.
He turns them to dust with his sword,
to windblown chaff with his bow.
3He pursues them and moves on unscathed,
by a path his feet have not traveled before.
4Who has done this and carried it through,
calling forth the generations from the beginning?
I, the Lord—with the first of them
and with the last—I am he.”
5The islands have seen it and fear;
the ends of the earth tremble.
They approach and come forward;
6they help each other
and say to their companions, “Be strong!”
7The metalworker encourages the goldsmith,
and the one who smooths with the hammer
spurs on the one who strikes the anvil.
One says of the welding, “It is good.”
The other nails down the idol so it will not topple.
8“But you, Israel, my servant,
Jacob, whom I have chosen,
you descendants of Abraham my friend,
9I took you from the ends of the earth,
from its farthest corners I called you.
I said, ‘You are my servant’;
I have chosen you and have not rejected you.
10So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
11“All who rage against you
will surely be ashamed and disgraced;
those who oppose you
will be as nothing and perish.
12Though you search for your enemies,
you will not find them.
Those who wage war against you
will be as nothing at all.
13For I am the Lord your God
who takes hold of your right hand
and says to you, Do not fear;
I will help you.
14Do not be afraid, you worm Jacob,
little Israel, do not fear,
for I myself will help you,” declares the Lord,
your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.
15“See, I will make you into a threshing sledge,
new and sharp, with many teeth.
You will thresh the mountains and crush them,
and reduce the hills to chaff.
16You will winnow them, the wind will pick them up,
and a gale will blow them away.
But you will rejoice in the Lord
and glory in the Holy One of Israel.
17“The poor and needy search for water,
but there is none;
their tongues are parched with thirst.
But I the Lord will answer them;
I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.
18I will make rivers flow on barren heights,
and springs within the valleys.
I will turn the desert into pools of water,
and the parched ground into springs.
19I will put in the desert
the cedar and the acacia, the myrtle and the olive.
I will set junipers in the wasteland,
the fir and the cypress together,
20so that people may see and know,
may consider and understand,
that the hand of the Lord has done this,
that the Holy One of Israel has created it.
21“Present your case,” says the Lord.
“Set forth your arguments,” says Jacob’s King.
22“Tell us, you idols,
what is going to happen.
Tell us what the former things were,
so that we may consider them
and know their final outcome.
Or declare to us the things to come,
23tell us what the future holds,
so we may know that you are gods.
Do something, whether good or bad,
so that we will be dismayed and filled with fear.
24But you are less than nothing
and your works are utterly worthless;
whoever chooses you is detestable.
25“I have stirred up one from the north, and he comes—
one from the rising sun who calls on my name.
He treads on rulers as if they were mortar,
as if he were a potter treading the clay.
26Who told of this from the beginning, so we could know,
or beforehand, so we could say, ‘He was right’?
No one told of this,
no one foretold it,
no one heard any words from you.
27I was the first to tell Zion, ‘Look, here they are!’
I gave to Jerusalem a messenger of good news.
28I look but there is no one—
no one among the gods to give counsel,
no one to give answer when I ask them.
29See, they are all false!
Their deeds amount to nothing;
their images are but wind and confusion.
El amparo de Israel
1«¡Callen en mi presencia, costas lejanas!
¡Naciones, renueven sus fuerzas!
Acérquense y hablen;
reunámonos para juicio.
2»¿Quién despertó al que viene del oriente
y lo llamó en justicia a su servicio?
Pone a las naciones en sus manos;
ante él los reyes se rinden.
Con su espada los vuelve polvo,
con su arco los dispersa como paja.
3Con paso firme los persigue
por una senda que nunca antes pisó.
4¿Quién realizó esto? ¿Quién lo hizo posible?
¿Quién llamó a las generaciones desde el principio?
Yo, el Señor, estoy con los primeros
y estaré con los últimos».
5Lo han visto las costas lejanas y temen;
tiemblan los confines de la tierra.
¡Ya se acercan, ya vienen!
6Cada uno ayuda a su compañero
y dice a su hermano: ¡Sé fuerte!
7El artesano anima al joyero
y el que aplana con el martillo
dice al que golpea el yunque:
«¡Es buena la soldadura!»;
luego asegura el ídolo con clavos
para que no se tambalee.
8«Pero tú, Israel, mi siervo,
tú, Jacob, a quien he escogido,
descendiente de Abraham, mi amigo:
9Te tomé de los confines de la tierra,
te llamé de los rincones más remotos
y te dije: “Tú eres mi siervo”.
Yo te escogí; no te rechacé.
10Así que no temas, porque yo estoy contigo;
no te angusties, porque yo soy tu Dios.
Te fortaleceré y te ayudaré;
te sostendré con la diestra de mi justicia.
11»Todos los que se enfurecen contra ti
sin duda serán avergonzados y humillados;
los que se te oponen serán como nada,
como si no existieran.
12Aunque busques a tus enemigos,
no los encontrarás.
Los que te hacen la guerra serán como nada,
como si no existieran.
13Porque yo soy el Señor tu Dios,
que sostiene tu mano derecha;
yo soy quien te dice:
“No temas, yo te ayudaré”.
14No temas, gusano Jacob,
pequeño Israel,
porque yo mismo te ayudaré», afirma el Señor,
¡el Santo de Israel, tu Redentor!
15«Te convertiré en una trilladora
nueva y afilada, de doble filo.
Trillarás las montañas y las harás polvo;
convertirás en paja las colinas.
16Las lanzarás al aire y se las llevará el viento;
un vendaval las dispersará.
Pero tú te alegrarás en el Señor,
te gloriarás en el Santo de Israel.
17»Los pobres y los necesitados buscan agua,
pero no la encuentran;
la sed les ha resecado la lengua.
Pero yo, el Señor, les responderé;
yo, el Dios de Israel, no los abandonaré.
18Haré brotar ríos en las cumbres áridas
y manantiales entre los valles.
Transformaré el desierto en estanques de agua
y el sequedal en manantiales.
19Plantaré en el desierto
cedros, acacias, mirtos y olivos;
en áridas tierras plantaré cipreses,
junto con pinos y abetos,
20para que la gente vea y sepa,
considere y entienda,
que la mano del Señor ha hecho esto,
que el Santo de Israel lo ha creado».
21«Expongan su caso»,
dice el Señor.
«Presenten sus pruebas»,
demanda el Rey de Jacob.
22«Preséntense41:22 Preséntense (LXX, Qumrán, Targum y Vulgata); Traigan (TM). y anuncien
lo que ha de suceder
y cómo fueron las cosas del pasado,
para que las consideremos
y conozcamos su desenlace.
¡Cuéntennos lo que está por venir!
23Digan qué nos depara el futuro;
así sabremos que ustedes son dioses.
Hagan algo, bueno o malo,
para verlo y llenarnos de terror.
24¡La verdad es que ustedes no son nada
y aun menos que nada son sus obras!
¡Abominable es quien los escoge!
25»Del norte hice venir a uno y acudió a mi llamado;
desde el oriente invoca mi nombre.
Como alfarero que amasa arcilla con los pies,
aplasta gobernantes como si fueran barro.
26¿Quién lo anunció desde el principio
para que lo supiéramos?
¿Quién lo anunció de antemano,
para que dijéramos: “Tenía razón”?
Nadie lo anunció ni lo proclamó;
nadie los oyó proclamar mensaje alguno.
27Yo fui el primero en decirle a Sión:
“¡Mira, ya están aquí!”.
Yo fui quien envió a Jerusalén un mensajero de buenas noticias.
28Miro entre ellos y no hay nadie;
no hay entre ellos quien aconseje,
no hay quien me responda cuando pregunto.
29¡Todos ellos son falsos!
Sus obras no son nada;
sus ídolos no son más que viento y confusión.
