Woe to the Leaders of Ephraim and Judah
1Woe to that wreath, the pride of Ephraim’s drunkards,
to the fading flower, his glorious beauty,
set on the head of a fertile valley—
to that city, the pride of those laid low by wine!
2See, the Lord has one who is powerful and strong.
Like a hailstorm and a destructive wind,
like a driving rain and a flooding downpour,
he will throw it forcefully to the ground.
3That wreath, the pride of Ephraim’s drunkards,
will be trampled underfoot.
4That fading flower, his glorious beauty,
set on the head of a fertile valley,
will be like figs ripe before harvest—
as soon as people see them and take them in hand,
they swallow them.
5In that day the Lord Almighty
will be a glorious crown,
a beautiful wreath
for the remnant of his people.
6He will be a spirit of justice
to the one who sits in judgment,
a source of strength
to those who turn back the battle at the gate.
7And these also stagger from wine
and reel from beer:
Priests and prophets stagger from beer
and are befuddled with wine;
they reel from beer,
they stagger when seeing visions,
they stumble when rendering decisions.
8All the tables are covered with vomit
and there is not a spot without filth.
9“Who is it he is trying to teach?
To whom is he explaining his message?
To children weaned from their milk,
to those just taken from the breast?
10For it is:
Do this, do that,
a rule for this, a rule for that28:10 Hebrew / sav lasav sav lasav / kav lakav kav lakav (probably meaningless sounds mimicking the prophet’s words); also in verse 13;
a little here, a little there.”
11Very well then, with foreign lips and strange tongues
God will speak to this people,
12to whom he said,
“This is the resting place, let the weary rest”;
and, “This is the place of repose”—
but they would not listen.
13So then, the word of the Lord to them will become:
Do this, do that,
a rule for this, a rule for that;
a little here, a little there—
so that as they go they will fall backward;
they will be injured and snared and captured.
14Therefore hear the word of the Lord, you scoffers
who rule this people in Jerusalem.
15You boast, “We have entered into a covenant with death,
with the realm of the dead we have made an agreement.
When an overwhelming scourge sweeps by,
it cannot touch us,
for we have made a lie our refuge
and falsehood28:15 Or false gods our hiding place.”
16So this is what the Sovereign Lord says:
“See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone,
a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation;
the one who relies on it
will never be stricken with panic.
17I will make justice the measuring line
and righteousness the plumb line;
hail will sweep away your refuge, the lie,
and water will overflow your hiding place.
18Your covenant with death will be annulled;
your agreement with the realm of the dead will not stand.
When the overwhelming scourge sweeps by,
you will be beaten down by it.
19As often as it comes it will carry you away;
morning after morning, by day and by night,
it will sweep through.”
The understanding of this message
will bring sheer terror.
20The bed is too short to stretch out on,
the blanket too narrow to wrap around you.
21The Lord will rise up as he did at Mount Perazim,
he will rouse himself as in the Valley of Gibeon—
to do his work, his strange work,
and perform his task, his alien task.
22Now stop your mocking,
or your chains will become heavier;
the Lord, the Lord Almighty, has told me
of the destruction decreed against the whole land.
23Listen and hear my voice;
pay attention and hear what I say.
24When a farmer plows for planting, does he plow continually?
Does he keep on breaking up and working the soil?
25When he has leveled the surface,
does he not sow caraway and scatter cumin?
Does he not plant wheat in its place,28:25 The meaning of the Hebrew for this word is uncertain.

and spelt in its field?
26His God instructs him
and teaches him the right way.
27Caraway is not threshed with a sledge,
nor is the wheel of a cart rolled over cumin;
caraway is beaten out with a rod,
and cumin with a stick.
28Grain must be ground to make bread;
so one does not go on threshing it forever.
The wheels of a threshing cart may be rolled over it,
but one does not use horses to grind grain.
29All this also comes from the Lord Almighty,
whose plan is wonderful,
whose wisdom is magnificent.
Ay de Efraín
1¡Ay de la altiva corona de los borrachos de Efraín,
de la flor marchita de su gloriosa hermosura,
que está sobre la cumbre de un valle fértil!
¡Ay de los abatidos por el vino!
2Miren, el Señor cuenta con alguien
que es fuerte y poderoso:
Este echará todo por tierra con violencia,
como tormenta de granizo,
como tempestad destructora,
como tormenta de aguas torrenciales,
como torrente desbordado.
3La altiva corona de los borrachos de Efraín
será pisoteada.
4Esa flor marchita de su gloriosa hermosura,
sobre la cumbre de un valle fértil,
será como higo maduro antes de la cosecha:
apenas alguien lo ve y lo tiene en la mano,
se lo traga.
5En aquel día el Señor de los Ejércitos
será una hermosa corona,
una diadema gloriosa
para el remanente de su pueblo.
6Él infundirá espíritu de justicia
al que se sienta en el tribunal,
y fortaleza a los que rechazan
los asaltos a la puerta.
7También sacerdotes y profetas
se tambalean por causa del vino,
trastabillan por causa del licor;
quedan aturdidos con el vino,
tropiezan a causa del licor.
Cuando tienen visiones, titubean;
cuando toman decisiones, vacilan.
8¡Sí, regadas de vómito están todas las mesas,
y no queda limpio ni un solo lugar!
9«¿A quién cree el Señor que enseña? —se preguntan—,
¿a quién está explicando su mensaje?
¿Cree que somos niños recién destetados,
que acaban de dejar el pecho?
10¿Por qué nos repite todo,
línea por línea,
palabra por palabra,

11Pues bien, Dios hablará a este pueblo
con labios extranjeros y lenguas extrañas,
12pueblo al que dijo:
«Este es el lugar de descanso;
que descanse el fatigado»;
y también:
«Este es el lugar de reposo».
¡Pero no quisieron escuchar!
13Por eso el Señor les explicará con detalles,
línea por línea,
palabra por palabra,
un poquito aquí, un poquito allá.
Les hablará para que caigan de espaldas,
queden heridos, enredados y atrapados.
14Por tanto, gobernantes insolentes de este pueblo de Jerusalén,
escuchen la palabra del Señor:
15Ustedes dicen: «Hemos hecho un convenio con la muerte;
hemos hecho una alianza con el sepulcro.28:15 sepulcro. Lit. Seol.
Cuando venga una calamidad abrumadora,
no nos podrá alcanzar,
porque hemos hecho de la mentira nuestro refugio
y del engaño nuestro escondite».
16Por eso dice el Señor y Dios:
«Miren, yo pongo en Sión una piedra probada,
piedra angular y preciosa para un cimiento firme;
el que crea no se tambaleará.
17Pondré como nivel la justicia
y la rectitud como plomada.
El granizo arrasará con el refugio de la mentira
y las aguas inundarán el escondite.
18Se anulará el convenio que hicieron con la muerte;
quedará sin efecto su alianza con el sepulcro.28:18 sepulcro. Lit. Seol.
Cuando venga la calamidad abrumadora,
a ustedes los aplastará.
19Cada vez que pase, los arrebatará;
pasará mañana tras mañana, de día y de noche».
La comprensión de este mensaje
causará terror absoluto.
20La cama es demasiado estrecha para estirarse en ella;
la manta es demasiado corta para envolverse en ella.
21Sí, el Señor se levantará como en el monte Perasín,
se moverá como en el valle de Gabaón;
para llevar a cabo su extraña obra,
para realizar su insólita tarea.
22Ahora bien, dejen de burlarse,
no sea que se aprieten más sus cadenas;
porque me ha hecho saber el Señor, el Señor de los Ejércitos,
acerca de la destrucción decretada contra todo el país.
23Escuchen, oigan mi voz;
presten atención, oigan mi palabra:
24Cuando un agricultor ara para sembrar,
¿lo hace sin descanso?
¿Se pasa todo el día abriendo surcos y removiendo el terreno?
25Después de que ha emparejado la superficie,
¿no siembra eneldo y esparce comino?
¿No siembra trigo en hileras,28:25 hileras. Palabra de difícil traducción.
cebada en el lugar debido
y centeno en las orillas?
26Es Dios quien lo instruye
y le enseña cómo hacerlo.
27Porque no se trilla el eneldo con rastrillo
ni sobre el comino se pasa una rueda de carreta,
sino que el eneldo se golpea con una vara
y el comino con un palo.
28El grano se tritura, pero no demasiado
ni tampoco se trilla sin descanso.
Se le pasan las ruedas de la carreta,
pero los caballos no lo trituran.
29También esto viene del Señor de los Ejércitos,
admirable por su consejo
y magnífico por su sabiduría.
