The Exile Symbolized
1The word of the Lord came to me: 2“Son of man, you are living among a rebellious people. They have eyes to see but do not see and ears to hear but do not hear, for they are a rebellious people.
3“Therefore, son of man, pack your belongings for exile and in the daytime, as they watch, set out and go from where you are to another place. Perhaps they will understand, though they are a rebellious people. 4During the daytime, while they watch, bring out your belongings packed for exile. Then in the evening, while they are watching, go out like those who go into exile. 5While they watch, dig through the wall and take your belongings out through it. 6Put them on your shoulder as they are watching and carry them out at dusk. Cover your face so that you cannot see the land, for I have made you a sign to the Israelites.”
7So I did as I was commanded. During the day I brought out my things packed for exile. Then in the evening I dug through the wall with my hands. I took my belongings out at dusk, carrying them on my shoulders while they watched.
8In the morning the word of the Lord came to me: 9“Son of man, did not the Israelites, that rebellious people, ask you, ‘What are you doing?’
10“Say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: This prophecy concerns the prince in Jerusalem and all the Israelites who are there.’ 11Say to them, ‘I am a sign to you.’
“As I have done, so it will be done to them. They will go into exile as captives.
12“The prince among them will put his things on his shoulder at dusk and leave, and a hole will be dug in the wall for him to go through. He will cover his face so that he cannot see the land. 13I will spread my net for him, and he will be caught in my snare; I will bring him to Babylonia, the land of the Chaldeans, but he will not see it, and there he will die. 14I will scatter to the winds all those around him—his staff and all his troops—and I will pursue them with drawn sword.
15“They will know that I am the Lord, when I disperse them among the nations and scatter them through the countries. 16But I will spare a few of them from the sword, famine and plague, so that in the nations where they go they may acknowledge all their detestable practices. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”
17The word of the Lord came to me: 18“Son of man, tremble as you eat your food, and shudder in fear as you drink your water. 19Say to the people of the land: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says about those living in Jerusalem and in the land of Israel: They will eat their food in anxiety and drink their water in despair, for their land will be stripped of everything in it because of the violence of all who live there. 20The inhabited towns will be laid waste and the land will be desolate. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’ ”
There Will Be No Delay
21The word of the Lord came to me: 22“Son of man, what is this proverb you have in the land of Israel: ‘The days go by and every vision comes to nothing’? 23Say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am going to put an end to this proverb, and they will no longer quote it in Israel.’ Say to them, ‘The days are near when every vision will be fulfilled. 24For there will be no more false visions or flattering divinations among the people of Israel. 25But I the Lord will speak what I will, and it shall be fulfilled without delay. For in your days, you rebellious people, I will fulfill whatever I say, declares the Sovereign Lord.’ ”
26The word of the Lord came to me: 27“Son of man, the Israelites are saying, ‘The vision he sees is for many years from now, and he prophesies about the distant future.’
28“Therefore say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: None of my words will be delayed any longer; whatever I say will be fulfilled, declares the Sovereign Lord.’ ”

1La palabra del Señor vino a mí y me dijo: 2«Hijo de hombre, vives en medio de un pueblo rebelde. Tienen ojos para ver, pero no ven; tienen oídos para oír, pero no oyen. ¡Son un pueblo rebelde!
3»Por tanto, hijo de hombre, prepara tu equipaje para el exilio y a plena luz del día, a la vista de todos, saldrás como quien va exiliado a otro lugar. Tal vez así entiendan, aunque son un pueblo rebelde. 4Saca tu equipaje a plena luz del día, a la vista de todos, y al caer la tarde ponte en marcha, a la vista de todos, como quien va al exilio. 5También en presencia de todos, haz un hueco en la pared y sal por ahí con tu equipaje. 6Al llegar la noche, mientras todos te estén viendo, ponte en marcha con el equipaje al hombro. Cúbrete la cara para que no puedas ver la tierra, porque de ti he hecho un presagio para el pueblo de Israel».
7Hice lo que se me había mandado; a plena luz del día saqué mi equipaje, como quien va al exilio. Al caer la tarde cavé en el muro con mis propias manos y, al llegar la noche, en presencia de todos, salí con mi equipaje al hombro.
8Por la mañana el Señor me dirigió la palabra: 9«Hijo de hombre, con toda seguridad el pueblo rebelde de Israel te preguntará: “¿Qué estás haciendo?”. 10Pero tú explícales: “Así dice el Señor y Dios: ‘Este mensaje se refiere al pueblo de Israel que vive en Jerusalén y también a su príncipe’ ”. 11Diles: “Yo soy un presagio para ustedes.
»”Lo que hice yo, les va a pasar a ustedes, pues serán llevados cautivos al exilio”.
12»Su príncipe se echará el equipaje al hombro y saldrá de noche por la abertura que abrirán en el muro. Se cubrirá la cara para no ver la tierra. 13Le tenderé mis redes y caerá en mi trampa. Así lo llevaré a Babilonia, la tierra de los babilonios,12:13 Lit. caldeos. pero no podrá verla y allá morirá. 14Dispersaré a los cuatro vientos a todos los que lo rodean, tanto a sus ayudantes como a todas sus tropas, y los perseguiré espada en mano. 15Entonces sabrán que yo soy el Señor.
»Cuando los haya dispersado y esparcido por las naciones, 16dejaré que unos pocos de ellos se escapen de la espada, del hambre y de la plaga, para que en las naciones por donde vayan den cuenta de sus prácticas abominables. Entonces sabrán que yo soy el Señor».
17La palabra del Señor vino a mí y me dijo: 18«Hijo de hombre, tiembla al comer tu pan, y llénate de espanto y miedo al beber tu agua. 19Adviértele al pueblo que está en la tierra que así dice el Señor y Dios acerca de los que habitan en Jerusalén y en la tierra de Israel: “Con angustia comerán su pan y con terror beberán su agua. Por la violencia de sus habitantes la tierra será despojada de todo lo que hay en ella. 20Las ciudades habitadas serán arrasadas y su país quedará en ruinas. Entonces sabrán ustedes que yo soy el Señor”».
21La palabra del Señor vino a mí y me dijo: 22«Hijo de hombre, ¿qué quiere decir este refrán que se repite en la tierra de Israel: “Se cumple el tiempo, pero no la visión”? 23Por lo tanto, adviérteles que así dice el Señor y Dios: “Pondré fin a ese refrán y ya no volverán a repetirlo en Israel”. También diles: “Ya vienen los días en que se cumplirán las visiones. 24Pues ya no habrá visiones engañosas ni predicciones que susciten falsas expectativas en el pueblo de Israel. 25Porque yo, el Señor, hablaré y lo que diga se cumplirá sin retraso. Pueblo rebelde, mientras ustedes aún tengan vida, yo cumpliré mi palabra”», afirma el Señor y Dios.
26La palabra del Señor vino a mí y me dijo: 27«Hijo de hombre, el pueblo de Israel anda diciendo que tus visiones son para un futuro distante y que tus profecías son a largo plazo.
28»Por lo tanto, adviérteles que así dice el Señor y Dios: “Mis palabras se cumplirán sin retraso: yo cumpliré con lo que digo”», afirma el Señor y Dios.
