4¶ For Gaza shall be forsaken, and Ashkelon a desolation: they shall drive out Ashdod at the noon day, and Ekron shall be rooted up. 5Woe unto the inhabitants of the sea coast, the nation of the Cherethites! the word of the LORD is against you; O Canaan, the land of the Philistines, I will even destroy thee, that there shall be no inhabitant. 6And the sea coast shall be dwellings and cottages for shepherds, and folds for flocks. 7And the coast shall be for the remnant of the house of Judah; they shall feed thereupon: in the houses of Ashkelon shall they lie down in the evening: for the LORD their God shall visit them, and turn away their captivity.2.7 for the LORD: or, when, etc
8¶ I have heard the reproach of Moab, and the revilings of the children of Ammon, whereby they have reproached my people, and magnified themselves against their border. 9Therefore as I live, saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, Surely Moab shall be as Sodom, and the children of Ammon as Gomorrah, even the breeding of nettles, and saltpits, and a perpetual desolation: the residue of my people shall spoil them, and the remnant of my people shall possess them. 10This shall they have for their pride, because they have reproached and magnified themselves against the people of the LORD of hosts. 11The LORD will be terrible unto them: for he will famish all the gods of the earth; and men shall worship him, every one from his place, even all the isles of the heathen.2.11 famish: Heb. make lean
12¶ Ye Ethiopians also, ye shall be slain by my sword. 13And he will stretch out his hand against the north, and destroy Assyria; and will make Nineveh a desolation, and dry like a wilderness. 14And flocks shall lie down in the midst of her, all the beasts of the nations: both the cormorant and the bittern shall lodge in the upper lintels of it; their voice shall sing in the windows; desolation shall be in the thresholds: for he shall uncover the cedar work.2.14 cormorant: or, pelican2.14 upper…: or, knops, or, chapiters2.14 for…: or, when he hath uncovered 15This is the rejoicing city that dwelt carelessly, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none beside me: how is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passeth by her shall hiss, and wag his hand.
1ای قومی كه حيا نداريد، به خود آييد، 2پيش از آنكه داوری آغاز گردد و فرصت شما چون كاه بر باد رود، قبل از آنكه خشم خداوند فرو ريزد و روز هولناک غضب او فرا رسد. 3ای تمام متواضعانی كه احكام او را بجا می‌آوريد، به سوی خداوند بازگشت نماييد؛ به راستی عمل كنيد و در حضور خداوند فروتن شويد تا شايد شما را از غضب خود در آن روز هلاكت مصون بدارد.
نابودی قومهای مجاور اسرائيل
4شهرهای غزه، اشقلون، اشدود و عقرون، ريشه‌كن و ويران خواهند شد. 5وای بر شما ای فلسطينی‌هايی كه در ساحل دريا و در سرزمين كنعان زندگی می‌كنيد، زيرا شما هم داوری خواهيد شد. خداوند شما را به هلاكت خواهد رساند و حتی يک نفر از شما هم باقی نخواهد ماند. 6زمينهای ساحلی شما مكانی برای شبانان و آغل گوسفندان خواهد شد. 7بازماندگان قبيلهٔ يهودا، سرزمين شما را اشغال كرده گله‌های خود را در آنجا خواهند چرانيد و خود در خانه‌های اشقلون خواهند خوابيد؛ زيرا خداوند با مهربانی از قوم خود ياد نموده خوشبختی آنها را باز خواهد گردانيد.
8طعنه‌های مردم موآب و عمون را شنيده‌ام كه قوم مرا مسخره نموده، تهديد به اشغال سرزمينشان می‌كنند. 9بنابراين، خداوند قادر متعال، خدای اسرائيل می‌فرمايد: «به حيات خود قسم، موآب و عمون مثل سدوم و عموره از بين خواهند رفت و به محلی از خارها، گودالهای نمک و ويرانی ابدی تبديل خواهند شد و بازماندگان قوم من آنها را غارت نموده، سرزمينهاشان را تصرف خواهند كرد.» 10آنها مزد غرور خود را دريافت خواهند كرد، زيرا به قوم خداوند قادر متعال اهانت نموده، ايشان را مسخره كردند. 11خداوند بلاهای هولناكی بر سرشان خواهد آورد. او تمامی خدايان جهان را به تباهی خواهد كشانيد و آنگاه همهٔ اقوام در سرزمينهای خود او را عبادت خواهند نمود.
12ای حبشی‌ها، شما هم به شمشير او كشته خواهيد شد.
13خداوند قدرت خود را بر ضد آشور به کار خواهد برد و پايتخت بزرگ آن، نينوا را ويران نموده، به بيابانی خشک مبدل خواهد كرد. 14آن شهر، چراگاه گوسفندان خواهد شد و انواع حيوانات وحشی در آن جای خواهند گرفت. خفاشها و جغدها در ميان ويرانه‌هايش لانه می‌كنند و صدايشان از پنجره‌های خانه‌های متروک شنيده می‌شود. در آستانهٔ خانه‌ها زباله جمع می‌شود و روكش زيبای ستونهای شهر كه از چوب سرو بود، از بين می‌رود. 15اين شهر مستحكم كه چنان در امنيت بود كه با خود می‌گفت: «در تمام دنيا شهری مانند من وجود ندارد!» ويران شده، لانهٔ حيوانات خواهد گرديد! هر كه از آنجا بگذرد سر خود را از بهت و حيرت تكان خواهد داد.
