The Sun Stands Still
1Now Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had taken Ai and totally destroyed10:1 The Hebrew term refers to the irrevocable giving over of things or persons to the Lord, often by totally destroying them; also in verses 28, 35, 37, 39 and 40. it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and that the people of Gibeon had made a treaty of peace with Israel and had become their allies. 2He and his people were very much alarmed at this, because Gibeon was an important city, like one of the royal cities; it was larger than Ai, and all its men were good fighters. 3So Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem appealed to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king of Jarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish and Debir king of Eglon. 4“Come up and help me attack Gibeon,” he said, “because it has made peace with Joshua and the Israelites.”
5Then the five kings of the Amorites—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon—joined forces. They moved up with all their troops and took up positions against Gibeon and attacked it.
6The Gibeonites then sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal: “Do not abandon your servants. Come up to us quickly and save us! Help us, because all the Amorite kings from the hill country have joined forces against us.”
7So Joshua marched up from Gilgal with his entire army, including all the best fighting men. 8The Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them; I have given them into your hand. Not one of them will be able to withstand you.”
9After an all-night march from Gilgal, Joshua took them by surprise. 10The Lord threw them into confusion before Israel, so Joshua and the Israelites defeated them completely at Gibeon. Israel pursued them along the road going up to Beth Horon and cut them down all the way to Azekah and Makkedah. 11As they fled before Israel on the road down from Beth Horon to Azekah, the Lord hurled large hailstones down on them, and more of them died from the hail than were killed by the swords of the Israelites.
12On the day the Lord gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel:
“Sun, stand still over Gibeon,
and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.”
13So the sun stood still,
and the moon stopped,
till the nation avenged itself on10:13 Or nation triumphed over its enemies,
as it is written in the Book of Jashar.
The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. 14There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the Lord listened to a human being. Surely the Lord was fighting for Israel!
15Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.
Five Amorite Kings Killed
16Now the five kings had fled and hidden in the cave at Makkedah. 17When Joshua was told that the five kings had been found hiding in the cave at Makkedah, 18he said, “Roll large rocks up to the mouth of the cave, and post some men there to guard it. 19But don’t stop; pursue your enemies! Attack them from the rear and don’t let them reach their cities, for the Lord your God has given them into your hand.”
20So Joshua and the Israelites defeated them completely, but a few survivors managed to reach their fortified cities. 21The whole army then returned safely to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah, and no one uttered a word against the Israelites.
22Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me.” 23So they brought the five kings out of the cave—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon. 24When they had brought these kings to Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the army commanders who had come with him, “Come here and put your feet on the necks of these kings.” So they came forward and placed their feet on their necks.
25Joshua said to them, “Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Be strong and courageous. This is what the Lord will do to all the enemies you are going to fight.” 26Then Joshua put the kings to death and exposed their bodies on five poles, and they were left hanging on the poles until evening.
27At sunset Joshua gave the order and they took them down from the poles and threw them into the cave where they had been hiding. At the mouth of the cave they placed large rocks, which are there to this day.
Southern Cities Conquered
28That day Joshua took Makkedah. He put the city and its king to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it. He left no survivors. And he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.
29Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Makkedah to Libnah and attacked it. 30The Lord also gave that city and its king into Israel’s hand. The city and everyone in it Joshua put to the sword. He left no survivors there. And he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.
31Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Libnah to Lachish; he took up positions against it and attacked it. 32The Lord gave Lachish into Israel’s hands, and Joshua took it on the second day. The city and everyone in it he put to the sword, just as he had done to Libnah. 33Meanwhile, Horam king of Gezer had come up to help Lachish, but Joshua defeated him and his army—until no survivors were left.
34Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Lachish to Eglon; they took up positions against it and attacked it. 35They captured it that same day and put it to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it, just as they had done to Lachish.
36Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron and attacked it. 37They took the city and put it to the sword, together with its king, its villages and everyone in it. They left no survivors. Just as at Eglon, they totally destroyed it and everyone in it.
38Then Joshua and all Israel with him turned around and attacked Debir. 39They took the city, its king and its villages, and put them to the sword. Everyone in it they totally destroyed. They left no survivors. They did to Debir and its king as they had done to Libnah and its king and to Hebron.
40So Joshua subdued the whole region, including the hill country, the Negev, the western foothills and the mountain slopes, together with all their kings. He left no survivors. He totally destroyed all who breathed, just as the Lord, the God of Israel, had commanded. 41Joshua subdued them from Kadesh Barnea to Gaza and from the whole region of Goshen to Gibeon. 42All these kings and their lands Joshua conquered in one campaign, because the Lord, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.
43Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.
Ataque de los reyes amorreos
1Adonisédec, rey de Jerusalén, se enteró de que Josué había tomado la ciudad de Hai y la había destruido completamente, pues Josué hizo con Hai y su rey lo mismo que había hecho con Jericó y su rey. Adonisédec también supo que los habitantes de Gabaón habían hecho un tratado de ayuda mutua con los israelitas y se habían quedado a vivir con ellos. 2Esto, por supuesto, alarmó grandemente a Adonisédec y a su gente, porque Gabaón era más importante y grande que la ciudad de Hai; era tan grande como las capitales reales, y tenía un ejército poderoso.
3Por eso Adonisédec envió un mensaje a los siguientes reyes: Hohán de Hebrón, Pirán de Jarmut, Jafía de Laquis, y Debir de Eglón. El mensaje decía: 4«Únanse a mí y conquistemos a Gabaón, porque ha hecho un pacto de ayuda mutua con Josué y los israelitas».
5Entonces los cinco reyes amorreos de Jerusalén, Hebrón, Jarmut, Laquis y Eglón se unieron y marcharon con sus ejércitos para acampar frente a Gabaón y atacarla.
Derrota de los reyes amorreos
6Los gabaonitas, por su parte, enviaron el siguiente mensaje a Josué, que estaba en Guilgal: «No abandone usted a estos siervos suyos. ¡Venga de inmediato y sálvenos! Necesitamos su ayuda, porque todos los reyes amorreos de la región montañosa se han aliado contra nosotros».
7Josué salió de Guilgal con todo su ejército, acompañados de sus mejores guerreros. 8Y el Señor dijo a Josué: «No les tengas miedo, pues yo te los entrego; ninguno de ellos podrá resistirte».
9Después de marchar toda la noche desde Guilgal, Josué los atacó por sorpresa. 10A su vez, el Señor llenó de pánico a los amorreos ante la presencia del ejército israelita, y este les infligió una tremenda derrota en Gabaón. A los que huyeron los persiguieron por el camino que sube a Bet Jorón, y acabaron con ellos por la vía que va a Azeca y Maquedá. 11Mientras los amorreos huían de Israel, por la bajada entre Bet Jorón y Azeca, el Señor mandó del cielo una tremenda granizada que mató a más gente de la que el ejército israelita había matado a filo de espada.
12Ese día en que el Señor entregó a los amorreos en manos de los israelitas, Josué habló al Señor y luego dijo en presencia de todo el pueblo:
«Sol, detente en Gabaón;
luna, párate sobre el valle de Ayalón».
13El sol se detuvo
y la luna se paró,
hasta que Israel se vengó de sus adversarios.
Esto está escrito en el libro de Jaser.
Y, en efecto, el sol se detuvo en medio del cielo y no se movió de allí por casi un día entero. 14Nunca antes ni después ha habido un día como aquel; fue el día en que el Señor escuchó los ruegos de un ser humano. ¡No cabe duda de que el Señor estaba peleando por Israel!
15Al terminar todo, Josué regresó a Guilgal con todo el ejército israelita.
Muerte de los reyes amorreos
16Los cinco reyes habían huido y se habían refugiado en una cueva en Maquedá. 17Tan pronto como Josué supo que habían hallado a los cinco reyes en la cueva, 18dio la siguiente orden: «Coloquen rocas a la entrada de la cueva y pongan unos guardias para que la vigilen. 19¡Que nadie se detenga! Persigan a los enemigos y atáquenlos por la retaguardia. No les permitan llegar a sus ciudades. ¡El Señor, Dios de ustedes, ya se los ha entregado!».
20Josué y el ejército israelita exterminaron a sus enemigos; muy pocos de estos pudieron refugiarse en las ciudades amuralladas. 21Finalmente, todos los israelitas retornaron sanos y salvos a Maquedá, donde estaba Josué. ¡Nadie en la comarca se atrevía a decir nada contra Israel!
22Entonces Josué mandó que destaparan la entrada de la cueva y que trajeran los cinco reyes amorreos. 23De inmediato sacaron a los cinco reyes de la cueva: los reyes de Jerusalén, Hebrón, Jarmut, Laquis y Eglón. 24Cuando se los trajeron, Josué convocó a todo el ejército israelita y ordenó a todos los comandantes que lo habían acompañado: «Acérquense y písenles el cuello a estos reyes». Los comandantes obedecieron al instante.
25Entonces Josué dijo: «No teman ni se desanimen; al contrario, sean fuertes y valientes. Esto es exactamente lo que el Señor hará con todos los que ustedes enfrenten en batalla».
26Dicho esto, Josué mató a los reyes, los colgó en cinco árboles y allí los dejó hasta el atardecer.
27Cuando ya el sol estaba por ponerse, Josué mandó que los descolgaran de los árboles y los arrojaran en la misma cueva donde antes se habían escondido. Entonces taparon la cueva con unas enormes rocas, las cuales permanecen allí hasta el día de hoy.
Conquista de las ciudades del sur
28Ese mismo día Josué tomó Maquedá y mató a filo de espada a su rey y a todos sus habitantes; ¡nadie quedó con vida! Y al rey de Maquedá le sucedió lo mismo que al rey de Jericó.
29De Maquedá, Josué y todo Israel se dirigieron a Libná y la atacaron. 30El Señor entregó en manos de Israel al rey y a sus habitantes. Josué mató a filo de espada a todos sus habitantes; nadie quedó con vida. Y al rey de Libná le sucedió lo mismo que al rey de Jericó.
31De Libná, Josué y todo Israel se dirigieron a Laquis. El ejército la sitió y la atacó. 32El Señor la entregó en manos de Israel y al segundo día la conquistaron. Todos en Laquis murieron a filo de espada, tal como había sucedido con Libná. 33Además, Horán, rey de Guézer, que había salido a defender a Laquis, fue totalmente derrotado junto con su ejército; nadie sobrevivió a la espada de Josué.
34De Laquis, Josué y todo Israel se dirigieron a Eglón. Sitiaron la ciudad y la atacaron. 35En un solo día la conquistaron y destruyeron a todos a filo de espada, tal como lo habían hecho con Laquis.
36De Eglón, Josué y todo Israel se dirigieron a Hebrón, y la atacaron. 37El ejército israelita tomó la ciudad y la eliminó a filo de espada, de modo que nadie, ni el rey ni ninguno de los habitantes de la ciudad y de sus aldeas, escapó con vida. Y tal como sucedió en Eglón, Hebrón fue destruida completamente.
38De Hebrón, Josué y todo Israel se dirigieron a Debir y la atacaron. 39Se apoderaron de la ciudad, de su rey y de todas sus aldeas, y mataron a filo de espada y consagraron al exterminio a todos sus habitantes. Nadie quedó con vida; todo fue arrasado. A Debir le sucedió lo mismo que había sucedido a Libná, a Hebrón y a sus respectivos reyes.
40Así Josué conquistó toda aquella región: la cordillera, el Néguev, las llanuras y las laderas. Derrotó a todos sus reyes, sin dejar ningún sobreviviente. Todo cuanto tenía aliento de vida fue destruido completamente. Esto lo hizo como el Señor, Dios de Israel, lo había ordenado. 41Josué conquistó a todos, desde Cades Barnea hasta Gaza y desde la región de Gosén hasta Gabaón. 42A todos esos reyes y sus territorios Josué los conquistó en una sola expedición, porque el Señor, Dios de Israel, combatía por su pueblo.
43Después Josué regresó al campamento de Guilgal junto con todo el ejército israelita.
