List of the Family Heads Returning With Ezra
1These are the family heads and those registered with them who came up with me from Babylon during the reign of King Artaxerxes:
2of the descendants of Phinehas, Gershom;
of the descendants of Ithamar, Daniel;
of the descendants of David, Hattush 3of the descendants of Shekaniah;
of the descendants of Parosh, Zechariah, and with him were registered 150 men;
4of the descendants of Pahath-Moab, Eliehoenai son of Zerahiah, and with him 200 men;
5of the descendants of Zattu,8:5 Some Septuagint manuscripts (also 1 Esdras 8:32); Hebrew does not have Zattu. Shekaniah son of Jahaziel, and with him 300 men;
6of the descendants of Adin, Ebed son of Jonathan, and with him 50 men;
7of the descendants of Elam, Jeshaiah son of Athaliah, and with him 70 men;
8of the descendants of Shephatiah, Zebadiah son of Michael, and with him 80 men;
9of the descendants of Joab, Obadiah son of Jehiel, and with him 218 men;
10of the descendants of Bani,8:10 Some Septuagint manuscripts (also 1 Esdras 8:36); Hebrew does not have Bani. Shelomith son of Josiphiah, and with him 160 men;
11of the descendants of Bebai, Zechariah son of Bebai, and with him 28 men;
12of the descendants of Azgad, Johanan son of Hakkatan, and with him 110 men;
13of the descendants of Adonikam, the last ones, whose names were Eliphelet, Jeuel and Shemaiah, and with them 60 men;
14of the descendants of Bigvai, Uthai and Zakkur, and with them 70 men.
The Return to Jerusalem
15I assembled them at the canal that flows toward Ahava, and we camped there three days. When I checked among the people and the priests, I found no Levites there. 16So I summoned Eliezer, Ariel, Shemaiah, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zechariah and Meshullam, who were leaders, and Joiarib and Elnathan, who were men of learning, 17and I ordered them to go to Iddo, the leader in Kasiphia. I told them what to say to Iddo and his fellow Levites, the temple servants in Kasiphia, so that they might bring attendants to us for the house of our God. 18Because the gracious hand of our God was on us, they brought us Sherebiah, a capable man, from the descendants of Mahli son of Levi, the son of Israel, and Sherebiah’s sons and brothers, 18 in all; 19and Hashabiah, together with Jeshaiah from the descendants of Merari, and his brothers and nephews, 20 in all. 20They also brought 220 of the temple servants—a body that David and the officials had established to assist the Levites. All were registered by name.
21There, by the Ahava Canal, I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask him for a safe journey for us and our children, with all our possessions. 22I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to protect us from enemies on the road, because we had told the king, “The gracious hand of our God is on everyone who looks to him, but his great anger is against all who forsake him.” 23So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer.
24Then I set apart twelve of the leading priests, namely, Sherebiah, Hashabiah and ten of their brothers, 25and I weighed out to them the offering of silver and gold and the articles that the king, his advisers, his officials and all Israel present there had donated for the house of our God. 26I weighed out to them 650 talents8:26 That is, about 24 tons or about 22 metric tons of silver, silver articles weighing 100 talents,8:26 That is, about 3 3/4 tons or about 3.4 metric tons 100 talents8:26 That is, about 3 3/4 tons or about 3.4 metric tons of gold, 2720 bowls of gold valued at 1,000 darics,8:27 That is, about 19 pounds or about 8.4 kilograms and two fine articles of polished bronze, as precious as gold.
28I said to them, “You as well as these articles are consecrated to the Lord. The silver and gold are a freewill offering to the Lord, the God of your ancestors. 29Guard them carefully until you weigh them out in the chambers of the house of the Lord in Jerusalem before the leading priests and the Levites and the family heads of Israel.” 30Then the priests and Levites received the silver and gold and sacred articles that had been weighed out to be taken to the house of our God in Jerusalem.
31On the twelfth day of the first month we set out from the Ahava Canal to go to Jerusalem. The hand of our God was on us, and he protected us from enemies and bandits along the way. 32So we arrived in Jerusalem, where we rested three days.
33On the fourth day, in the house of our God, we weighed out the silver and gold and the sacred articles into the hands of Meremoth son of Uriah, the priest. Eleazar son of Phinehas was with him, and so were the Levites Jozabad son of Jeshua and Noadiah son of Binnui. 34Everything was accounted for by number and weight, and the entire weight was recorded at that time.
35Then the exiles who had returned from captivity sacrificed burnt offerings to the God of Israel: twelve bulls for all Israel, ninety-six rams, seventy-seven male lambs and, as a sin offering,8:35 Or purification offering twelve male goats. All this was a burnt offering to the Lord. 36They also delivered the king’s orders to the royal satraps and to the governors of Trans-Euphrates, who then gave assistance to the people and to the house of God.

El regreso a Jerusalén
15A estos jefes de familia los reuní junto al arroyo que corre hacia el río Ahava y acampamos allí por tres días. Cuando pasé revista a todo el pueblo y a los sacerdotes, no encontré a ningún descendiente de Leví. 16Entonces mandé llamar a Eliezer, Ariel, Semaías, Elnatán, Jarib, Elnatán, Natán, Zacarías y Mesulán, que eran jefes del pueblo; también a Joyarib y Elnatán, que eran maestros, 17y los envié a Idó, que era el jefe de Casifiá. Les encargué que pidieran a Idó y a sus compañeros, quienes estaban al frente de Casifiá, que nos proveyeran servidores para el Templo de nuestro Dios. 18Y, como la mano de Dios estaba sobre nosotros, nos enviaron a un israelita muy capacitado llamado Serebías, hijo de Majlí, descendiente de Leví. Con él vinieron sus hijos y sus hermanos, dieciocho personas en total. 19También nos enviaron a Jasabías y a Isaías, descendientes de Merari, junto con sus hijos y hermanos, veinte personas en total. 20Además, del grupo que David y sus oficiales habían asignado para que ayudaran a los levitas, nos enviaron doscientos veinte servidores, los cuales fueron registrados por su nombre.
21Luego, estando cerca del río Ahava, proclamé un ayuno para que nos humilláramos ante nuestro Dios y le pidiéramos que nos acompañara durante el camino, a nosotros, a nuestros hijos y nuestras posesiones. 22En realidad, sentí vergüenza de pedirle al rey que nos enviara un pelotón de caballería para que nos protegiera de los enemigos, ya que le habíamos dicho al rey que la mano de Dios protege a todos los que confían en él, pero que Dios descarga su poder y su ira contra quienes lo abandonan. 23Así que ayunamos y oramos a nuestro Dios pidiéndole su protección y él nos escuchó.
24Después aparté a doce líderes de los sacerdotes: Serebías, Jasabías y diez de sus parientes. 25En presencia de ellos pesé el oro, los utensilios sagrados y las ofrendas que el rey, sus consejeros, sus oficiales más importantes y todos los israelitas allí presentes habían entregado para el Templo de nuestro Dios. 26Lo que pesé fue lo siguiente: seiscientos cincuenta talentos8:26 Es decir, aprox. 22 t. de plata, utensilios de plata que pesaban cien talentos,8:26 Es decir, aprox. 3.4 t. cien talentos 8:26 Es decir, aprox. 3.4 t. de oro, 27veinte tazas de oro que pesaban mil dáricos,8:27 Es decir, aprox. 8.4 kg. y dos recipientes de bronce pulido de la mejor calidad, tan preciosos como el oro.
28Luego les dije: «Ustedes y los utensilios han sido consagrados al Señor. La plata y el oro son una ofrenda voluntaria para el Señor, Dios de nuestros antepasados. 29Vigílenlos y guárdenlos hasta que los pesen en los aposentos del Templo del Señor en Jerusalén, en presencia de los líderes de los sacerdotes, de los levitas y de los jefes de las familias del pueblo de Israel». 30Así que los sacerdotes y levitas recibieron la plata, el oro y los utensilios que fueron pesados para llevarlos al Templo de nuestro Dios en Jerusalén.
31El día doce del mes primero partimos del río Ahava para ir a Jerusalén. Durante todo el trayecto la mano de Dios estaba sobre nosotros y nos libró de enemigos y asaltantes. 32Al llegar a Jerusalén nos quedamos descansando tres días.
33Al cuarto día pesamos la plata, el oro y los utensilios en el Templo de nuestro Dios, y entregamos todo al sacerdote Meremot, hijo de Urías. Eleazar, hijo de Finés, estaba allí con él, lo mismo que los levitas Jozabad, hijo de Jesúa, y Noadías, hijo de Binuy. 34Ese día pesamos y contamos todo y registramos el peso total.
35Luego, en honor del Señor, Dios de Israel, los que habían regresado del cautiverio ofrecieron, en holocausto y como ofrenda por el perdón del pecado de todo el pueblo, doce novillos, noventa y seis carneros, setenta y siete corderos y doce chivos. 36Y se les entregaron los decretos del rey a los sátrapas del reino y a los gobernadores de la provincia al oeste del río Éufrates, los cuales prestaron todo su apoyo al pueblo y al Templo de Dios.
