4¶ And I looked, and, behold, a whirlwind came out of the north, a great cloud, and a fire infolding itself, and a brightness was about it, and out of the midst thereof as the colour of amber, out of the midst of the fire.1.4 infolding…: Heb. catching itself 5Also out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living creatures. 15¶ Now as I beheld the living creatures, behold one wheel upon the earth by the living creatures, with his four faces. 16The appearance of the wheels and their work was like unto the colour of a beryl: and they four had one likeness: and their appearance and their work was as it were a wheel in the middle of a wheel. 17When they went, they went upon their four sides: and they turned not when they went. 18As for their rings, they were so high that they were dreadful; and their rings were full of eyes round about them four.1.18 and their rings: or, and their strakes 19And when the living creatures went, the wheels went by them: and when the living creatures were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up. 20Whithersoever the spirit was to go, they went, thither was their spirit to go; and the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels.1.20 of…: or, of life 21When those went, these went; and when those stood, these stood; and when those were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels.1.21 of…: or, of life 22And the likeness of the firmament upon the heads of the living creature was as the colour of the terrible crystal, stretched forth over their heads above. 23And under the firmament were their wings straight, the one toward the other: every one had two, which covered on this side, and every one had two, which covered on that side, their bodies. 24And when they went, I heard the noise of their wings, like the noise of great waters, as the voice of the Almighty, the voice of speech, as the noise of an host: when they stood, they let down their wings. 25And there was a voice from the firmament that was over their heads, when they stood, and had let down their wings.
26¶ And above the firmament that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone: and upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it. 27And I saw as the colour of amber, as the appearance of fire round about within it, from the appearance of his loins even upward, and from the appearance of his loins even downward, I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and it had brightness round about. 28As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one that spake.

Synen med de fyra varelserna och Herrens härlighet

Det senare verkar dock troligt; Hesekiel var präst, och prästerna började sin tjänstgöring vid trettioårsåldern. 4Jag såg en stormvind komma från norr, ett enormt moln med flammande eld, omgivet av ett ljussken. I dess innersta, mitt i elden, glänste det som av glödande metall1:4 Det hebreiska ordets, som här översätts med glödande metall, betydelse är osäker. Andra tolkningar: vitt guld, ädelsten.. 5Där inne syntes något som liknade fyra varelser. De såg ut som människor, 6men var och en av dem hade fyra ansikten och fyra vingar. 7Deras ben var raka, men fötterna liknade en kalvs klövar och glänste som polerad koppar. 8Under vingarna hade de människohänder på alla fyra sidorna1:8 Eller …åt fyra håll.. Alla fyra hade ansikten och vingar.
9Deras vingar vidrörde varandra, och de rörde sig rakt fram utan att vända sig om. 10Deras ansikten liknade en människas ansikte, och alla fyra hade ett lejonansikte på högra sidan, alla fyra hade ett tjuransikte på vänstra sidan, och alla fyra hade ett örnansikte. 11Sådana var deras ansikten. Deras vingar var utbredda upptill. Var och en hade två vingar som de vidrörde varandra med, och två som täckte deras kropp. 12Var och en av dem gick rakt fram. De gick dit anden1:12 Kan också syfta på Guds Ande, men i ljuset av v. 20, där varelsernas ande klart står omtalad är det troligare att det även här är frågan om deras ande. I Hesekiels bok står Anden/ande(n) ofta omtalad, och i många fall är det svårt att se om ordet syftar på Guds Ande eller någon annans; samma hebreiska ord används också om vind. gick, och de gick utan att vända sig. 13Varelsernas gestalter liknade glödande koleld och brinnande facklor.1:13 Eller: Mellan varelserna var något som liknade…. Grundtexten är svårtolkad. Elden rörde sig fram och tillbaka mellan varelserna, och blixtar sköt fram ur den. 14De rörde sig fram och tillbaka, snabbt som blixten.
15Jag såg på de fyra varelserna och lade märke till ett hjul på marken bredvid var och en av dem. 16Hjulen såg ut och var konstruerade så att de gnistrade som krysolit. Alla fyra var likadana och tycktes vara gjorda så att varje hjul var inneslutet i ett annat hjul. 17De kunde gå i alla fyra riktningarna utan att vända sig. 18Hjulringarna var höga och fruktansvärda, alla fyra försedda med ögon runtom.
19När varelserna rörde sig, rörde sig hjulen tillsammans med dem. När varelserna lyfte över jorden, lyfte också hjulen. 20De gick dit anden gick, och hjulen lyfte tillsammans med dem, för deras ande var i hjulen. 21När varelserna rörde sig, rörde sig även hjulen, när varelserna stannade, stannade även hjulen, och när varelserna lyfte över jorden, lyfte hjulen tillsammans med dem, eftersom varelsernas ande var i hjulen.
22Över varelsernas huvuden var något som liknade ett himlavalv, fruktansvärt glänsande som iskristaller, utbrett över deras huvuden. 23Under valvet var deras vingar utsträckta mot varandra, och med två vingar täckte de var och en sin kropp. 24Jag hörde bruset från deras vingar, när de rörde sig, som dånet av stora vatten, som den Väldiges röst, som larmet från en armé. När de stannade sänkte de vingarna. 25En röst hördes från himlavalvet över dem när de stannade med sänkta vingar.
26Däruppe ovanför valvet över dem stod något som liknade en tron gjord av safirsten, och på det som liknade en tron satt någon som såg ut som en människa. 27Jag såg att det som tycktes vara hans höfter och uppåt var som glödande metall, som omgivet av eld. Neråt från det som tycktes vara hans höfter såg jag något som liknade eld, omgivet av ett ljussken. 28Ljusskenet som syntes runt omkring honom var som en båge i skyn en regnig dag.
Så såg det ut, det som liknade Herrens härlighet. När jag såg den, föll jag ner med ansiktet mot marken. Då hörde jag rösten av någon som talade.
