すべてのものには時がある
1何事にも定まった時があります。
2生まれる時、死ぬ時、植える時、収穫の時、
3殺す時、病気が治る時、壊す時、やり直す時、
4泣く時、笑う時、悲しむ時、踊る時、
5石をばらまく時、石をかき集める時、
抱きしめる時、抱きしめない時、
6何かを見つける時、物を失う時、
大切にしまっておく時、遠くに投げ捨てる時、
7引き裂く時、修理する時、黙っている時、口を開く時、
8愛する時、憎む時、戦う時、和解する時。
9一生懸命働いたところで、何の益になるでしょう。 10私はこのことを、神が人間に与えたさまざまの仕事と関連して考えてみました。 11あらゆることには、ふさわしい時というものがあります。また神は、人間の心に永遠を思う思いを与えました。しかし、人は神の働きの全体を見ることができないのです。 12私の結論はこうです。第一に、できるだけ幸福に過ごし、人生を楽しむ以上にすばらしいことはないということです。 13第二に、人は食べたり飲んだりして自分の労苦の実を楽しみ、味わうべきだということです。それは神からの贈り物だからです。
14続いて、次のことも知りました。神のすることは一点の非の打ちどころもなく、何一つ付け加えたり、取り除いたりすることはできません。神はこのことを通して、人が全能の神を恐れるようにと願っているのです。
15今あるものは、ずっと昔にもあったことです。これから起こることも、以前に起こったことです。神は、はるか昔にあって今は跡形もなくなっているものを再び生じさせているのです。
16私はそれだけでなく、世界中で正義がすたれて犯罪が増し、法廷さえ金次第になっていることを知りました。 17私は心の中で言いました。「やがて、神が人間のしたことを、良いことも悪いことも全部さばく時がくる。」
18私はまた、神が罪深い今の世界をそのままにしておくのは、人間を試すためであり、人間が獣と変わらないことを悟らせるためであることに気づきました。 19人間も動物も、同じ空気を吸い、同じように死んでいきます。人間が獣より優れている点などないのです。なんとむなしいことでしょう。 20どちらも同じ所へ行くのです。土から出て土に帰るのです。 21こんなことを言うのも、人の霊は天に上り、動物の霊は地中深く降りて行くことを、誰ひとり証明できないからです。 22だからこそ、自分の仕事に生きがいを見いだす以上に幸福なことはないと判断したのです。これが人間が地上にいる理由です。未来に起こることを楽しむことはできないのですから、今のうちに人生を十分に楽しむことです。
