Solomon Builds the Temple
1In the four hundred and eightieth6:1 Hebrew; Septuagint four hundred and fortieth year after the Israelites came out of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv, the second month, he began to build the temple of the Lord.
2The temple that King Solomon built for the Lord was sixty cubits long, twenty wide and thirty high.6:2 That is, about 90 feet long, 30 feet wide and 45 feet high or about 27 meters long, 9 meters wide and 14 meters high 3The portico at the front of the main hall of the temple extended the width of the temple, that is twenty cubits,6:3 That is, about 30 feet or about 9 meters; also in verses 16 and 20 and projected ten cubits6:3 That is, about 15 feet or about 4.5 meters; also in verses 23-26 from the front of the temple. 4He made narrow windows high up in the temple walls. 5Against the walls of the main hall and inner sanctuary he built a structure around the building, in which there were side rooms. 6The lowest floor was five cubits6:6 That is, about 7 1/2 feet or about 2.3 meters; also in verses 10 and 24 wide, the middle floor six cubits6:6 That is, about 9 feet or about 2.7 meters and the third floor seven.6:6 That is, about 11 feet or about 3.2 meters He made offset ledges around the outside of the temple so that nothing would be inserted into the temple walls.
7In building the temple, only blocks dressed at the quarry were used, and no hammer, chisel or any other iron tool was heard at the temple site while it was being built.
8The entrance to the lowest6:8 Septuagint; Hebrew middle floor was on the south side of the temple; a stairway led up to the middle level and from there to the third. 9So he built the temple and completed it, roofing it with beams and cedar planks. 10And he built the side rooms all along the temple. The height of each was five cubits, and they were attached to the temple by beams of cedar.
11The word of the Lord came to Solomon: 12“As for this temple you are building, if you follow my decrees, observe my laws and keep all my commands and obey them, I will fulfill through you the promise I gave to David your father. 13And I will live among the Israelites and will not abandon my people Israel.”
14So Solomon built the temple and completed it. 15He lined its interior walls with cedar boards, paneling them from the floor of the temple to the ceiling, and covered the floor of the temple with planks of juniper. 16He partitioned off twenty cubits at the rear of the temple with cedar boards from floor to ceiling to form within the temple an inner sanctuary, the Most Holy Place. 17The main hall in front of this room was forty cubits6:17 That is, about 60 feet or about 18 meters long. 18The inside of the temple was cedar, carved with gourds and open flowers. Everything was cedar; no stone was to be seen.
19He prepared the inner sanctuary within the temple to set the ark of the covenant of the Lord there. 20The inner sanctuary was twenty cubits long, twenty wide and twenty high. He overlaid the inside with pure gold, and he also overlaid the altar of cedar. 21Solomon covered the inside of the temple with pure gold, and he extended gold chains across the front of the inner sanctuary, which was overlaid with gold. 22So he overlaid the whole interior with gold. He also overlaid with gold the altar that belonged to the inner sanctuary.
23For the inner sanctuary he made a pair of cherubim out of olive wood, each ten cubits high. 24One wing of the first cherub was five cubits long, and the other wing five cubits—ten cubits from wing tip to wing tip. 25The second cherub also measured ten cubits, for the two cherubim were identical in size and shape. 26The height of each cherub was ten cubits. 27He placed the cherubim inside the innermost room of the temple, with their wings spread out. The wing of one cherub touched one wall, while the wing of the other touched the other wall, and their wings touched each other in the middle of the room. 28He overlaid the cherubim with gold.
29On the walls all around the temple, in both the inner and outer rooms, he carved cherubim, palm trees and open flowers. 30He also covered the floors of both the inner and outer rooms of the temple with gold.
31For the entrance to the inner sanctuary he made doors out of olive wood that were one fifth of the width of the sanctuary. 32And on the two olive-wood doors he carved cherubim, palm trees and open flowers, and overlaid the cherubim and palm trees with hammered gold. 33In the same way, for the entrance to the main hall he made doorframes out of olive wood that were one fourth of the width of the hall. 34He also made two doors out of juniper wood, each having two leaves that turned in sockets. 35He carved cherubim, palm trees and open flowers on them and overlaid them with gold hammered evenly over the carvings.
36And he built the inner courtyard of three courses of dressed stone and one course of trimmed cedar beams.
37The foundation of the temple of the Lord was laid in the fourth year, in the month of Ziv. 38In the eleventh year in the month of Bul, the eighth month, the temple was finished in all its details according to its specifications. He had spent seven years building it.
Salomón construye el templo

1Salomón comenzó a construir el templo del Señor en el cuarto año de su reinado en Israel, en el mes de zif, que es el mes segundo. Habían transcurrido cuatrocientos ochenta años desde que los israelitas salieron de Egipto.
2El templo que el rey Salomón construyó para el Señor medía sesenta codos de largo por veinte de ancho y treinta de alto.6:2 Es decir, aprox. 27 m de largo, 9 m de ancho y 14 m de alto. 3El vestíbulo de la nave central del templo medía también veinte codos6:3 Es decir, aprox. 9 m. de ancho y por el frente del templo sobresalía diez codos.6:3 Es decir, aprox. 4.5 m; también en vv. 23-26. 4Salomón también mandó colocar en el templo ventanales con celosías. 5Alrededor del edificio, y contra las paredes de la nave central y del santuario interior, construyó un anexo con cámaras laterales. 6El piso inferior del anexo medía cinco codos6:6 Es decir, aprox. 2.3 m; también en vv. 10 y 24. de ancho; el piso intermedio, seis codos,6:6 Es decir, aprox. 2.7 m. y el piso más alto, siete codos.6:6 Es decir, aprox. 3.2 m. Salomón había mandado hacer salientes en el exterior del templo para que las vigas no se empotraran en la pared misma.
7En la construcción del templo solo se emplearon piedras de cantera ya labradas, así que durante las obras no se oyó el ruido de martillos ni de piquetas, ni de ninguna otra herramienta.
8La entrada al piso inferior6:8 inferior (LXX y Targum); intermedio (TM). se hallaba en el lado sur del templo; una escalera de caracol conducía al nivel intermedio y a la planta alta. 9Salomón terminó de construir el templo techándolo con vigas y tablones de cedro. 10A lo largo del templo construyó el anexo, el cual tenía una altura de cinco codos y quedaba unido a la pared del templo por medio de vigas de cedro.
11La palabra del Señor vino a Salomón y le dio este mensaje: 12«Ya que estás construyendo este templo, quiero decirte que, si andas según mis estatutos, y obedeces mis leyes y todos mis mandamientos, yo cumpliré por medio de ti la promesa que hice a tu padre David. 13Entonces viviré entre los israelitas y no abandonaré a mi pueblo Israel».
14Cuando Salomón terminó de construir la estructura del templo, 15revistió las paredes interiores con tablas de cedro, artesonándolas desde el piso hasta el techo; el piso lo recubrió con tablones de ciprés. 16En el santuario interior, al fondo del templo, acondicionó el Lugar Santísimo, recubriendo el espacio de veinte codos con tablas de cedro desde el piso hasta el techo. 17Frente al Lugar Santísimo estaba la nave central, la cual medía cuarenta codos.6:17 Es decir, aprox. 18 m. 18El interior del templo lo recubrió de cedro tallado con figuras de calabazas y flores abiertas. No se veía una sola piedra, pues todo era de cedro.
19Salomón dispuso el santuario interno del templo para que se colocara allí el arca del pacto del Señor. 20El interior de este santuario, que medía veinte codos de largo por veinte de ancho por veinte de alto, lo recubrió de oro puro, y también recubrió de cedro el altar. 21Además, Salomón recubrió de oro puro el interior del templo, y tendió cadenas de oro a lo largo del frente del santuario interno, el cual estaba recubierto de oro. 22En efecto, recubrió de oro todo el santuario interior y así mismo el altar que estaba delante de este.
23Salomón mandó esculpir para el santuario interior dos querubines de madera de olivo, cada uno de los cuales medía diez codos de altura. 24De una punta a otra, las alas extendidas del primer querubín medían diez codos, es decir, cada una de sus alas medía cinco codos. 25Las del segundo querubín también medían diez codos, pues los dos eran idénticos en tamaño y forma. 26Cada querubín medía diez codos de altura. 27Salomón puso los querubines con sus alas extendidas en medio del recinto interior del templo. Con una de sus alas, cada querubín tocaba una pared, mientras que sus otras alas se tocaban en medio del santuario. 28Luego Salomón recubrió de oro los querubines.
29Sobre las paredes que rodeaban el templo, lo mismo por dentro que por fuera, talló figuras de querubines, palmeras y flores abiertas. 30Además, recubrió de oro los pisos de los cuartos interiores y exteriores del templo.
31Para la entrada del santuario interior, Salomón hizo puertas de madera de olivo, con jambas y postes pentagonales. 32Sobre las dos puertas de madera de olivo talló figuras de querubines, palmeras y flores abiertas, y todas ellas las recubrió de oro. 33Así mismo, para la entrada de la nave central hizo postes cuadrangulares de madera de olivo. 34También hizo dos puertas de madera de ciprés, cada una con dos hojas giratorias. 35Sobre ellas talló figuras de querubines, palmeras y flores abiertas, y las recubrió de oro bien ajustado al relieve.
36Las paredes del atrio interior las construyó con tres hileras de piedra labrada por cada hilera de vigas de cedro.
37Los cimientos del templo del Señor se habían echado en el mes de zif del cuarto año del reinado de Salomón, 38y en el mes de bul del año undécimo, es decir, en el mes octavo de ese año, se terminó de construir el templo siguiendo al pie de la letra todos los detalles del diseño. Siete años le llevó a Salomón la construcción del templo.
