David Defeats the Ammonites
1In the course of time, the king of the Ammonites died, and his son Hanun succeeded him as king. 2David thought, “I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, just as his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent a delegation to express his sympathy to Hanun concerning his father.
When David’s men came to the land of the Ammonites, 3the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think David is honoring your father by sending envoys to you to express sympathy? Hasn’t David sent them to you only to explore the city and spy it out and overthrow it?” 4So Hanun seized David’s envoys, shaved off half of each man’s beard, cut off their garments at the buttocks, and sent them away.
5When David was told about this, he sent messengers to meet the men, for they were greatly humiliated. The king said, “Stay at Jericho till your beards have grown, and then come back.”
6When the Ammonites realized that they had become obnoxious to David, they hired twenty thousand Aramean foot soldiers from Beth Rehob and Zobah, as well as the king of Maakah with a thousand men, and also twelve thousand men from Tob.
7On hearing this, David sent Joab out with the entire army of fighting men. 8The Ammonites came out and drew up in battle formation at the entrance of their city gate, while the Arameans of Zobah and Rehob and the men of Tob and Maakah were by themselves in the open country.
9Joab saw that there were battle lines in front of him and behind him; so he selected some of the best troops in Israel and deployed them against the Arameans. 10He put the rest of the men under the command of Abishai his brother and deployed them against the Ammonites. 11Joab said, “If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you are to come to my rescue; but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come to rescue you. 12Be strong, and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. The Lord will do what is good in his sight.”
13Then Joab and the troops with him advanced to fight the Arameans, and they fled before him. 14When the Ammonites realized that the Arameans were fleeing, they fled before Abishai and went inside the city. So Joab returned from fighting the Ammonites and came to Jerusalem.
15After the Arameans saw that they had been routed by Israel, they regrouped. 16Hadadezer had Arameans brought from beyond the Euphrates River; they went to Helam, with Shobak the commander of Hadadezer’s army leading them.
17When David was told of this, he gathered all Israel, crossed the Jordan and went to Helam. The Arameans formed their battle lines to meet David and fought against him. 18But they fled before Israel, and David killed seven hundred of their charioteers and forty thousand of their foot soldiers.10:18 Some Septuagint manuscripts (see also 1 Chron. 19:18); Hebrew horsemen He also struck down Shobak the commander of their army, and he died there. 19When all the kings who were vassals of Hadadezer saw that they had been routed by Israel, they made peace with the Israelites and became subject to them.
So the Arameans were afraid to help the Ammonites anymore.
David derrota a los amonitas

Y así los despidió.
5Los hombres de David se sentían muy avergonzados. Cuando David se enteró de lo que había pasado, mandó que los recibieran y les dieran este mensaje de su parte: «Quédense en Jericó y no regresen hasta que les crezca la barba».
6Al darse cuenta los amonitas de que habían ofendido a David, hicieron trámites para contratar mercenarios: de entre los arameos de Bet Rejob y de Sobá, veinte mil soldados de infantería; del rey de Macá, mil hombres; y de Tob, doce mil hombres.
7Cuando David lo supo, despachó a Joab con todos los soldados del ejército. 8Los amonitas avanzaron hasta la entrada de su ciudad y se alistaron para la batalla, mientras que los arameos de Sobá y Rejob se quedaron aparte, en campo abierto, junto con los hombres de Tob y de Macá.
9Joab se vio amenazado por el frente y por la retaguardia, así que escogió a las mejores tropas israelitas para pelear contra los arameos. 10El resto de las tropas las puso al mando de su hermano Abisay, para que enfrentaran a los amonitas. 11A Abisay le ordenó: «Si los arameos pueden más que yo, tú vendrás a rescatarme; y si los amonitas pueden más que tú, yo iré a tu rescate. 12¡Ánimo! Luchemos con valor por nuestro pueblo y por las ciudades de nuestro Dios. ¡Y que el Señor haga lo que bien le parezca!».
13Enseguida Joab y sus tropas avanzaron contra los arameos y estos huyeron de él. 14Al ver que los arameos se daban a la fuga, también los amonitas huyeron de Abisay y se refugiaron en la ciudad. Entonces Joab suspendió el ataque contra los amonitas y regresó a Jerusalén.
15Los arameos, al verse derrotados por Israel, volvieron a reunirse. 16Además, Hadad Ezer mandó movilizar a los arameos que estaban al otro lado del río Éufrates, los cuales fueron a Jelán bajo el mando de Sobac, comandante del ejército de Hadad Ezer.
17Cuando David se enteró de esto, reunió a todo Israel, cruzó el Jordán y marchó hacia Jelán. Los arameos se enfrentaron con David y lo atacaron, 18pero tuvieron que huir ante los israelitas. También hirió a Sobac, comandante del ejército arameo, quien murió allí mismo. 19Al ver que los arameos habían sido derrotados por los israelitas, todos los reyes vasallos de Hadad Ezer hicieron la paz con los israelitas y se sometieron a ellos.
Y nunca más se atrevieron los arameos a ir en auxilio de los amonitas.
