Eliphaz
1Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:
2“Can a man be of benefit to God?
Can even a wise person benefit him?
3What pleasure would it give the Almighty if you were righteous?
What would he gain if your ways were blameless?
4“Is it for your piety that he rebukes you
and brings charges against you?
5Is not your wickedness great?
Are not your sins endless?
6You demanded security from your relatives for no reason;
you stripped people of their clothing, leaving them naked.
7You gave no water to the weary
and you withheld food from the hungry,
8though you were a powerful man, owning land—
an honored man, living on it.
9And you sent widows away empty-handed
and broke the strength of the fatherless.
10That is why snares are all around you,
why sudden peril terrifies you,
11why it is so dark you cannot see,
and why a flood of water covers you.
12“Is not God in the heights of heaven?
And see how lofty are the highest stars!
13Yet you say, ‘What does God know?
Does he judge through such darkness?
14Thick clouds veil him, so he does not see us
as he goes about in the vaulted heavens.’
15Will you keep to the old path
that the wicked have trod?
16They were carried off before their time,
their foundations washed away by a flood.
17They said to God, ‘Leave us alone!
What can the Almighty do to us?’
18Yet it was he who filled their houses with good things,
so I stand aloof from the plans of the wicked.
19The righteous see their ruin and rejoice;
the innocent mock them, saying,
20‘Surely our foes are destroyed,
and fire devours their wealth.’
21“Submit to God and be at peace with him;
in this way prosperity will come to you.
22Accept instruction from his mouth
and lay up his words in your heart.
23If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored:
If you remove wickedness far from your tent
24and assign your nuggets to the dust,
your gold of Ophir to the rocks in the ravines,
25then the Almighty will be your gold,
the choicest silver for you.
26Surely then you will find delight in the Almighty
and will lift up your face to God.
27You will pray to him, and he will hear you,
and you will fulfill your vows.
28What you decide on will be done,
and light will shine on your ways.
29When people are brought low and you say, ‘Lift them up!’
then he will save the downcast.
30He will deliver even one who is not innocent,
who will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands.”
Tercer discurso de Elifaz
1A esto respondió Elifaz de Temán:
2«¿Puede alguien, por muy sabio que sea,
serle a Dios de algún provecho?
3¿Sacará alguna ventaja el Todopoderoso
con que seas un hombre justo?
¿Tendrá algún beneficio
si tu conducta es intachable?
4»¿Acaso te reprende por temerlo
y por eso te lleva a juicio?
5¿No es acaso demasiada tu maldad?
¿Y no son incontables tus pecados?
6Sin motivo demandabas fianza de tus hermanos,
y en prenda los despojabas de sus mantos;
desnudos los dejabas.
7Al sediento no le dabas agua;
al hambriento le negabas la comida.
8Como hombre de poder te adueñaste de la tierra;
como hombre prominente, en ella te asentaste.
9No dabas nada a las viudas
y rompías los brazos22:9 rompías los brazos. Alt. les anulaste la fuerza. a los huérfanos.
10Por eso ahora te ves rodeado de trampas
y te asaltan temores repentinos;
11la oscuridad te impide ver
y te ahogan las aguas torrenciales.
12»¿No está Dios en las alturas de los cielos?
¡Mira las estrellas, cuán altas y remotas!
13Sin embargo, cuestionas: “¿Y Dios qué sabe?
¿Puede acaso juzgar a través de las tinieblas?
14Él recorre los cielos de un extremo al otro
y densas nubes lo envuelven,
¡así que no puede vernos!”.
15¿Vas a seguir por los trillados caminos
que han recorrido los malvados?
16Perdieron la vida antes de tiempo;
un diluvio arrasó sus cimientos.
17Increparon a Dios: “¡Déjanos tranquilos!
¿Qué puedes tú hacernos,22:17 hacernos (LXX y Siríaca); hacerle (TM). Todopoderoso?”.
18¡Y fue Dios quien llenó sus casas de bienes!
¡Yo no me dejaré llevar por sus malos consejos!
19Los justos se alegran al ver la ruina de los malvados;
los inocentes dicen en son de burla:
20“Nuestros enemigos han sido destruidos;
el fuego ha consumido sus riquezas”.
21»Sométete a Dios; ponte en paz con él
y volverá a ti la prosperidad.
22Acepta la enseñanza que mana de su boca;
grábate sus palabras en tu corazón.
23Si te vuelves al Todopoderoso
y alejas de tu casa la maldad,
serás del todo restaurado;
24si tu oro refinado22:24 oro refinado. Lit. oro de Ofir. lo arrojas por el suelo,
entre rocas y cañadas,
25tendrás por oro al Todopoderoso,
y será él para ti como plata refinada.
26En el Todopoderoso te deleitarás;
ante Dios levantarás tu rostro.
27Cuando ores, él te escuchará
y tú le cumplirás tus promesas.
28Tendrás éxito en tus decisiones
y en tus caminos brillará la luz.
29Cuando sean humillados y les digas “Levántense”,
Dios salvará a los humildes.
30Él librará aun al que no es inocente;
si tienes manos limpias, quedarás a salvo».
