The Birth of Isaac
1Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised. 2Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him. 3Abraham gave the name Isaac21:3 Isaac means he laughs. to the son Sarah bore him. 4When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God commanded him. 5Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.
6Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.” 7And she added, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”
Hagar and Ishmael Sent Away
8The child grew and was weaned, and on the day Isaac was weaned Abraham held a great feast. 9But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was mocking, 10and she said to Abraham, “Get rid of that slave woman and her son, for that woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac.”
11The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son. 12But God said to him, “Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring21:12 Or seed will be reckoned. 13I will make the son of the slave into a nation also, because he is your offspring.”
14Early the next morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar. He set them on her shoulders and then sent her off with the boy. She went on her way and wandered in the Desert of Beersheba.
15When the water in the skin was gone, she put the boy under one of the bushes. 16Then she went off and sat down about a bowshot away, for she thought, “I cannot watch the boy die.” And as she sat there, she21:16 Hebrew; Septuagint the child began to sob.
17God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there. 18Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.”
19Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.
20God was with the boy as he grew up. He lived in the desert and became an archer. 21While he was living in the Desert of Paran, his mother got a wife for him from Egypt.
The Treaty at Beersheba
22At that time Abimelek and Phicol the commander of his forces said to Abraham, “God is with you in everything you do. 23Now swear to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or my descendants. Show to me and the country where you now reside as a foreigner the same kindness I have shown to you.”
24Abraham said, “I swear it.”
25Then Abraham complained to Abimelek about a well of water that Abimelek’s servants had seized. 26But Abimelek said, “I don’t know who has done this. You did not tell me, and I heard about it only today.”
27So Abraham brought sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelek, and the two men made a treaty. 28Abraham set apart seven ewe lambs from the flock, 29and Abimelek asked Abraham, “What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs you have set apart by themselves?”
30He replied, “Accept these seven lambs from my hand as a witness that I dug this well.”
31So that place was called Beersheba,21:31 Beersheba can mean well of seven and well of the oath. because the two men swore an oath there.
32After the treaty had been made at Beersheba, Abimelek and Phicol the commander of his forces returned to the land of the Philistines. 33Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called on the name of the Lord, the Eternal God. 34And Abraham stayed in the land of the Philistines for a long time.
Nacimiento de Isaac
1Tal como el Señor lo había dicho, actuó a favor de Sara y cumplió con la promesa que había hecho. 2Sara quedó embarazada y dio un hijo a Abraham en su vejez. Esto sucedió en el tiempo anunciado por Dios. 3Al hijo que Sara le dio, Abraham le puso por nombre Isaac.21:3 En hebreo, Isaac significa él se ríe. 4Cuando su hijo Isaac cumplió ocho días de nacido, Abraham lo circuncidó, tal como Dios se lo había ordenado. 5Abraham tenía ya cien años cuando nació su hijo Isaac.
6Sara dijo entonces: «Dios me ha hecho reír, y todos los que se enteren de que he tenido un hijo se reirán conmigo. 7¿Quién hubiera dicho a Abraham que Sara amamantaría hijos? Sin embargo, le he dado un hijo en su vejez».
Expulsión de Agar e Ismael
8El niño Isaac creció y fue destetado. Ese mismo día, Abraham hizo un gran banquete. 9Pero Sara se dio cuenta de que el hijo que Agar, la egipcia, había dado a Abraham, se burlaba de su hijo Isaac.21:9 de su hijo Isaac (LXX); TM no incluye estas palabras. 10Por eso dijo a Abraham:
—¡Echa de aquí a esa esclava y a su hijo! El hijo de esa esclava jamás tendrá parte en la herencia con mi hijo Isaac.
11Esto angustió mucho a Abraham porque se trataba de su propio hijo. 12Pero Dios dijo a Abraham: «No te angusties por el muchacho ni por tu esclava. Hazle caso a Sara, pues tu descendencia se establecerá por medio de Isaac. 13Pero también del hijo de la esclava haré una gran nación, porque es descendiente tuyo».
14Al día siguiente, Abraham se levantó de madrugada, tomó un pan y un recipiente de cuero para agua y se los dio a Agar, poniéndoselos sobre el hombro. Luego le entregó al muchacho y la despidió. Agar partió y anduvo errante por el desierto de Berseba.
15Cuando se acabó el agua del recipiente, puso al muchacho debajo de un arbusto 16y fue a sentarse sola a distancia de un tiro de flecha,21:16 a distancia … de flecha. Es decir, a unos 100 m de distancia. pues pensaba: «No quiero ver morir al muchacho». En cuanto ella se sentó, comenzó a llorar desconsoladamente.
17Cuando Dios oyó al muchacho sollozar, el ángel de Dios llamó a Agar desde el cielo y le dijo: «¿Qué te pasa, Agar? No temas, pues Dios ha escuchado los sollozos del muchacho ahí donde está. 18Levántate y tómalo de la mano, que yo haré de él una gran nación».
19En ese momento, Dios abrió los ojos de Agar y ella vio un pozo de agua. Enseguida fue a llenar el recipiente de cuero y dio de beber al muchacho.
20Dios acompañó al muchacho y este fue creciendo. Vivió en el desierto y se convirtió en un tirador de arco; 21habitó en el desierto de Parán y su madre lo casó con una egipcia.
Pacto entre Abraham y Abimélec
22En aquel tiempo Abimélec, que estaba acompañado por Ficol, comandante de su ejército, dijo a Abraham:
—Dios está contigo en todo lo que haces. 23Júrame ahora, por Dios mismo, que no me tratarás a mí con falsedad, tampoco a mis hijos ni a mis descendientes. Júrame que a mí y al país que te ha recibido como extranjero nos tratarás con la misma lealtad con que yo te he tratado.
24—¡Lo juro! —respondió Abraham.
25Luego Abraham se quejó ante Abimélec por causa de un pozo de agua del cual los siervos de Abimélec se habían apropiado. 26Pero Abimélec dijo:
—No sé quién pudo haberlo hecho. Me acabo de enterar, pues tú no me lo habías dicho.
27Entonces Abraham llevó ovejas y vacas, se las dio a Abimélec y los dos hicieron un pacto. 28Pero Abraham apartó siete ovejitas del rebaño, 29por lo que Abimélec preguntó:
—¿Qué pasa? ¿Por qué has apartado estas siete ovejitas?
30—Acepta estas siete ovejitas —contestó Abraham—. Ellas servirán de prueba de que yo cavé este pozo.
31Por eso a aquel lugar le dieron el nombre de Berseba,21:31 En hebreo, Berseba significa pozo de los siete, y pozo del juramento. porque allí los dos hicieron un juramento.
32Después de haber hecho el pacto en Berseba, Abimélec y Ficol, el comandante de su ejército, volvieron a la tierra de los filisteos. 33Abraham plantó un árbol de tamarisco en Berseba y en ese lugar invocó el nombre del Señor, el Dios Eterno. 34Y se quedó en la tierra de los filisteos durante mucho tiempo.
