Zebah and Zalmunna
1Now the Ephraimites asked Gideon, “Why have you treated us like this? Why didn’t you call us when you went to fight Midian?” And they challenged him vigorously.
2But he answered them, “What have I accomplished compared to you? Aren’t the gleanings of Ephraim’s grapes better than the full grape harvest of Abiezer? 3God gave Oreb and Zeeb, the Midianite leaders, into your hands. What was I able to do compared to you?” At this, their resentment against him subsided.
4Gideon and his three hundred men, exhausted yet keeping up the pursuit, came to the Jordan and crossed it. 5He said to the men of Sukkoth, “Give my troops some bread; they are worn out, and I am still pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.”
6But the officials of Sukkoth said, “Do you already have the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna in your possession? Why should we give bread to your troops?”
7Then Gideon replied, “Just for that, when the Lord has given Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, I will tear your flesh with desert thorns and briers.”
8From there he went up to Peniel8:8 Hebrew Penuel, a variant of Peniel; also in verses 9 and 17 and made the same request of them, but they answered as the men of Sukkoth had. 9So he said to the men of Peniel, “When I return in triumph, I will tear down this tower.”
10Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with a force of about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of the armies of the eastern peoples; a hundred and twenty thousand swordsmen had fallen. 11Gideon went up by the route of the nomads east of Nobah and Jogbehah and attacked the unsuspecting army. 12Zebah and Zalmunna, the two kings of Midian, fled, but he pursued them and captured them, routing their entire army.
13Gideon son of Joash then returned from the battle by the Pass of Heres. 14He caught a young man of Sukkoth and questioned him, and the young man wrote down for him the names of the seventy-seven officials of Sukkoth, the elders of the town. 15Then Gideon came and said to the men of Sukkoth, “Here are Zebah and Zalmunna, about whom you taunted me by saying, ‘Do you already have the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna in your possession? Why should we give bread to your exhausted men?’ ” 16He took the elders of the town and taught the men of Sukkoth a lesson by punishing them with desert thorns and briers. 17He also pulled down the tower of Peniel and killed the men of the town.
18Then he asked Zebah and Zalmunna, “What kind of men did you kill at Tabor?”
“Men like you,” they answered, “each one with the bearing of a prince.”
19Gideon replied, “Those were my brothers, the sons of my own mother. As surely as the Lord lives, if you had spared their lives, I would not kill you.” 20Turning to Jether, his oldest son, he said, “Kill them!” But Jether did not draw his sword, because he was only a boy and was afraid.
21Zebah and Zalmunna said, “Come, do it yourself. ‘As is the man, so is his strength.’ ” So Gideon stepped forward and killed them, and took the ornaments off their camels’ necks.
Gideon’s Ephod
22The Israelites said to Gideon, “Rule over us—you, your son and your grandson—because you have saved us from the hand of Midian.”
23But Gideon told them, “I will not rule over you, nor will my son rule over you. The Lord will rule over you.” 24And he said, “I do have one request, that each of you give me an earring from your share of the plunder.” (It was the custom of the Ishmaelites to wear gold earrings.)
25They answered, “We’ll be glad to give them.” So they spread out a garment, and each of them threw a ring from his plunder onto it. 26The weight of the gold rings he asked for came to seventeen hundred shekels,8:26 That is, about 43 pounds or about 20 kilograms not counting the ornaments, the pendants and the purple garments worn by the kings of Midian or the chains that were on their camels’ necks. 27Gideon made the gold into an ephod, which he placed in Ophrah, his town. All Israel prostituted themselves by worshiping it there, and it became a snare to Gideon and his family.
Gideon’s Death
28Thus Midian was subdued before the Israelites and did not raise its head again. During Gideon’s lifetime, the land had peace forty years.
29Jerub-Baal son of Joash went back home to live. 30He had seventy sons of his own, for he had many wives. 31His concubine, who lived in Shechem, also bore him a son, whom he named Abimelek. 32Gideon son of Joash died at a good old age and was buried in the tomb of his father Joash in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
33No sooner had Gideon died than the Israelites again prostituted themselves to the Baals. They set up Baal-Berith as their god 34and did not remember the Lord their God, who had rescued them from the hands of all their enemies on every side. 35They also failed to show any loyalty to the family of Jerub-Baal (that is, Gideon) in spite of all the good things he had done for them.
Zeba y Zalmuna

—¿Por qué nos has tratado así? ¿Por qué no nos llamaste cuando fuiste a luchar contra los madianitas?
Y se lo reprocharon severamente.
2—¿Qué hice yo, comparado con lo que hicieron ustedes? —respondió él—. ¿No vale más lo que sobra de las uvas de Efraín que toda la vendimia de Abiezer? 3Dios entregó en manos de ustedes a Oreb y a Zeb, los líderes madianitas. Comparado con lo que hicieron ustedes, ¡lo que yo hice no fue nada!
Al oír la respuesta de Gedeón, se calmó el resentimiento de ellos contra él.
4Gedeón y sus trescientos hombres agotados, pero persistiendo en la persecución, llegaron al Jordán y lo cruzaron. 5Allí Gedeón dijo a la gente de Sucot:
—Denles pan a mis soldados, están agotados y todavía estoy persiguiendo a Zeba y a Zalmuna, los reyes de Madián.
6Pero los oficiales de Sucot respondieron:
—¿Acaso tienes ya en tu poder las manos de Zeba y Zalmuna? ¿Por qué tendríamos que darle pan a tu ejército?
7Gedeón contestó:
—¡Está bien! Cuando el Señor haya entregado en mis manos a Zeba y a Zalmuna, les desgarraré a ustedes la carne de sus cuerpos con espinas y zarzas del desierto.
8Desde allí subió a Peniel y les pidió lo mismo. Pero los de Peniel dieron la misma respuesta que los hombres de Sucot. 9Por eso advirtió a los hombres de Peniel: «Cuando yo vuelva victorioso, derribaré esta torre».
10Zeba y Zalmuna estaban en Carcor con una fuerza de quince mil guerreros, que era todo lo que quedaba de los ejércitos del oriente, pues habían caído en batalla ciento veinte mil soldados. 11Gedeón subió por la ruta de los nómadas, al este de Noba y Yogbea, y atacó al ejército cuando este se creía seguro. 12Huyeron Zeba y Zalmuna, los dos reyes de Madián, pero él los persiguió y los capturó, aterrorizando a todo el ejército.
13Cuando Gedeón, hijo de Joás, volvió de la batalla por el paso de Jeres, 14capturó a un joven de Sucot y lo interrogó. Entonces el joven le anotó los nombres de los setenta y siete oficiales y jefes de Sucot. 15Luego Gedeón fue y dijo a los hombres de Sucot: «Aquí están Zeba y Zalmuna, por causa de quienes se burlaron de mí al decir: “¿Acaso tienes ya en tu poder las manos de Zeba y Zalmuna? ¿Por qué tendríamos que darles pan a tus hombres que están agotados?”». 16Se apoderó de los jefes de la ciudad, tomó espinas y zarzas del desierto y castigó con ellas a los hombres de Sucot; así les enseñó quién era él. 17También derribó la torre de Peniel y mató a los hombres de la ciudad.
18Entonces les preguntó a Zeba y a Zalmuna:
—¿Cómo eran los hombres que ustedes mataron en Tabor?
—Parecidos a ti —respondieron ellos—; cada uno de ellos tenía el aspecto de un príncipe.
19—¡Eran mis hermanos —respondió Gedeón—, los hijos de mi propia madre! Tan cierto como que el Señor vive, si les hubieran perdonado la vida, yo no los mataría a ustedes.
20Volviéndose a Jéter, su hijo mayor, le dijo:
—¡Vamos, mátalos!
Pero Jéter no sacó su espada, porque era apenas un muchacho y tenía miedo.
21Zeba y Zalmuna dijeron:
—Vamos, mátanos tú mismo. “¡Al hombre se le conoce por su valentía!”.
Gedeón se levantó y mató a Zeba y Zalmuna, y les quitó a sus camellos los adornos que llevaban en el cuello.
El efod de Gedeón
22Entonces los israelitas dijeron a Gedeón:
—Gobierna sobre nosotros y, después de ti, tu hijo y tu nieto; porque nos has librado del poder de los madianitas.
23Pero Gedeón dijo:
—Yo no los gobernaré ni tampoco mi hijo. Solo el Señor los gobernará. 24Pero —añadió— tengo una petición: que cada uno de ustedes me dé un anillo de lo que les tocó del botín.
Era costumbre de los ismaelitas usar anillos de oro.
25—Con mucho gusto te los daremos —contestaron.
Así que tendieron una manta y cada hombre echó en ella un anillo de su botín. 26El peso de los anillos de oro que él les pidió llegó a mil setecientos siclos,8:26 Es decir, aprox. 20 kg. sin contar los adornos, los aros y los vestidos de color carmesí que usaban los reyes madianitas, ni los collares que llevaban sus camellos. 27Con el oro Gedeón hizo un efod, que puso en Ofra, su ciudad. Todo Israel se prostituyó al adorar allí el efod, el cual se convirtió en una trampa para Gedeón y su familia.
Muerte de Gedeón
28Los madianitas fueron sometidos delante de los israelitas y no volvieron a levantar cabeza. Y durante cuarenta años, mientras vivió Gedeón, el país tuvo paz.
29Yerubaal, hijo de Joás, regresó a vivir a su casa. 30Tuvo setenta hijos, pues eran muchas sus esposas. 31Su concubina8:31 Véase nota en Gn 22:24. que vivía en Siquén también le dio un hijo, a quien Gedeón llamó Abimélec. 32Gedeón, hijo de Joás, murió a una edad avanzada y fue sepultado en la tumba de Joás, su padre, en Ofra, pueblo del clan de Abiezer.
33En cuanto murió Gedeón, los israelitas volvieron a prostituirse ante los ídolos de Baal. Erigieron a Baal Berit como su dios 34y se olvidaron del Señor su Dios, que los había rescatado del poder de todos los enemigos que los rodeaban. 35También dejaron de mostrarse bondadosos con la familia de Yerubaal, es decir, Gedeón, conforme a todo lo bueno que él había hecho por Israel.
