Jeremiah Thrown Into a Cistern
1Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jehukal38:1 Hebrew Jukal, a variant of Jehukal son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur son of Malkijah heard what Jeremiah was telling all the people when he said, 2“This is what the Lord says: ‘Whoever stays in this city will die by the sword, famine or plague, but whoever goes over to the Babylonians38:2 Or Chaldeans; also in verses 18, 19 and 23 will live. They will escape with their lives; they will live.’ 3And this is what the Lord says: ‘This city will certainly be given into the hands of the army of the king of Babylon, who will capture it.’ ”
4Then the officials said to the king, “This man should be put to death. He is discouraging the soldiers who are left in this city, as well as all the people, by the things he is saying to them. This man is not seeking the good of these people but their ruin.”
5“He is in your hands,” King Zedekiah answered. “The king can do nothing to oppose you.”
6So they took Jeremiah and put him into the cistern of Malkijah, the king’s son, which was in the courtyard of the guard. They lowered Jeremiah by ropes into the cistern; it had no water in it, only mud, and Jeremiah sank down into the mud.
7But Ebed-Melek, a Cushite,38:7 Probably from the upper Nile region an official38:7 Or a eunuch in the royal palace, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern. While the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate, 8Ebed-Melek went out of the palace and said to him, 9“My lord the king, these men have acted wickedly in all they have done to Jeremiah the prophet. They have thrown him into a cistern, where he will starve to death when there is no longer any bread in the city.”
10Then the king commanded Ebed-Melek the Cushite, “Take thirty men from here with you and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.”
11So Ebed-Melek took the men with him and went to a room under the treasury in the palace. He took some old rags and worn-out clothes from there and let them down with ropes to Jeremiah in the cistern. 12Ebed-Melek the Cushite said to Jeremiah, “Put these old rags and worn-out clothes under your arms to pad the ropes.” Jeremiah did so, 13and they pulled him up with the ropes and lifted him out of the cistern. And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.
Zedekiah Questions Jeremiah Again
14Then King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah the prophet and had him brought to the third entrance to the temple of the Lord. “I am going to ask you something,” the king said to Jeremiah. “Do not hide anything from me.”
15Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “If I give you an answer, will you not kill me? Even if I did give you counsel, you would not listen to me.”
16But King Zedekiah swore this oath secretly to Jeremiah: “As surely as the Lord lives, who has given us breath, I will neither kill you nor hand you over to those who want to kill you.”
17Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “This is what the Lord God Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, your life will be spared and this city will not be burned down; you and your family will live. 18But if you will not surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, this city will be given into the hands of the Babylonians and they will burn it down; you yourself will not escape from them.’ ”
19King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid of the Jews who have gone over to the Babylonians, for the Babylonians may hand me over to them and they will mistreat me.”
20“They will not hand you over,” Jeremiah replied. “Obey the Lord by doing what I tell you. Then it will go well with you, and your life will be spared. 21But if you refuse to surrender, this is what the Lord has revealed to me: 22All the women left in the palace of the king of Judah will be brought out to the officials of the king of Babylon. Those women will say to you:
“ ‘They misled you and overcame you—
those trusted friends of yours.
Your feet are sunk in the mud;
your friends have deserted you.’
23“All your wives and children will be brought out to the Babylonians. You yourself will not escape from their hands but will be captured by the king of Babylon; and this city will38:23 Or and you will cause this city to be burned down.”
24Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “Do not let anyone know about this conversation, or you may die. 25If the officials hear that I talked with you, and they come to you and say, ‘Tell us what you said to the king and what the king said to you; do not hide it from us or we will kill you,’ 26then tell them, ‘I was pleading with the king not to send me back to Jonathan’s house to die there.’ ”
27All the officials did come to Jeremiah and question him, and he told them everything the king had ordered him to say. So they said no more to him, for no one had heard his conversation with the king.
28And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard until the day Jerusalem was captured.
The Fall of Jerusalem
This is how Jerusalem was taken:

Se entregará como botín de guerra, pero salvará su vida”. 3Así dice el Señor: “Esta ciudad caerá en poder del ejército del rey de Babilonia y será capturada”».
4Los oficiales dijeron al rey:
—Hay que matar a este hombre. Con semejantes discursos está desmoralizando a los soldados y a todo el pueblo que aún queda en esta ciudad. Este hombre no busca el bien del pueblo, sino su desgracia.
5El rey Sedequías respondió:
—Lo dejo en sus manos. Ni yo, que soy el rey, puedo oponerme a ustedes.
6Ellos tomaron a Jeremías y, bajándolo con cuerdas, lo echaron en la cisterna del patio de la guardia, la cual era de Malquías, el hijo del rey. Pero como en la cisterna no había agua, sino lodo, Jeremías se hundió en él.
7El cusita Ebedmélec, funcionario38:7 funcionario. O eunuco. de la casa real, se enteró de que habían echado a Jeremías en la cisterna. En cierta ocasión cuando el rey estaba participando en una sesión frente al portón de Benjamín, 8Ebedmélec salió del palacio real y dijo:
9—Mi rey y señor, estos hombres han actuado con maldad. Han arrojado a Jeremías en la cisterna y allí se morirá de hambre, porque ya no hay pan en la ciudad.
10Entonces el rey ordenó al cusita Ebedmélec:
—Toma contigo treinta38:10 treinta (TM); tres (un mss. hebreo). hombres y rescata de la cisterna al profeta Jeremías antes de que se muera.
11Ebedmélec tomó consigo a los hombres, fue a la sala que estaba debajo de la tesorería del palacio real, sacó de allí ropas y trapos viejos; luego, con unas sogas, se los bajó a la cisterna a Jeremías. 12Ebedmélec dijo a Jeremías:
—Ponte estas ropas y trapos viejos debajo de tus brazos para protegerte de las sogas.
Así lo hizo Jeremías. 13Los hombres tiraron de las sogas y lo sacaron de la cisterna. Y Jeremías permaneció en el patio de la guardia.
Sedequías interroga a Jeremías
14El rey Sedequías mandó que llevaran a Jeremías a la tercera entrada del Templo del Señor y allí le dijo:
—Te voy a preguntar algo; por favor, no me ocultes nada.
15Jeremías respondió a Sedequías:
—Si yo respondo a su pregunta, lo más seguro es que me mate. Y si le doy un consejo, no me va a hacer caso.
16Pero en secreto el rey Sedequías hizo este juramento a Jeremías:
—¡Tan cierto como que vive el Señor, quien nos ha dado esta vida, no te mataré ni te entregaré en manos de estos hombres que atentan contra tu vida!
17Jeremías dijo a Sedequías:
—Así dice el Señor de los Ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: “Si se rinde ante los oficiales del rey de Babilonia, salvará su vida, esta ciudad no será incendiada y usted y su familia vivirán. 18Pero, si no se rinde ante los oficiales del rey de Babilonia, la ciudad caerá bajo el poder de los babilonios,38:18 Lit. caldeos. será incendiada y usted no tendrá escapatoria”.
19El rey Sedequías respondió:
—Yo tengo miedo de los judíos que se pasaron al bando de los babilonios, pues me pueden entregar en sus manos para que me torturen.
20Jeremías contestó:
—Obedezca la voz del Señor que yo le estoy comunicando y no caerá en manos de los babilonios. Así le irá bien a usted y salvará su vida. 21Pero si se niega a rendirse, esta es la palabra que el Señor me ha revelado: 22Todas las mujeres que aún quedan en el palacio del rey de Judá serán entregadas a los oficiales del rey de Babilonia. Ellas mismas le echarán en cara:
»“Tus amigos más confiables
te han engañado y te han vencido.
Tienes los pies hundidos en el fango,
pues tus amigos te dieron la espalda”.
23»Todas sus mujeres y sus hijos serán entregados a los babilonios. Usted mismo no podrá escapar, sino que caerá bajo el poder del rey de Babilonia y la ciudad será incendiada».
24Sedequías contestó a Jeremías:
—Que nadie se entere de estas palabras, pues de lo contrario morirás. 25Si los oficiales se enteran de que yo hablé contigo y vienen y te dicen: “Dinos ya lo que has informado al rey y lo que él te dijo, no nos ocultes nada, pues de lo contrario te mataremos”, 26tú les dirás: “Vine a suplicarle al rey que no me mandara de vuelta a casa de Jonatán, a morir allí”.
27Y así fue. Todos los oficiales vinieron a interrogar a Jeremías, pero él contestó de acuerdo con lo que el rey había ordenado. Entonces lo dejaron tranquilo, porque nadie había escuchado la conversación. 28Y Jeremías se quedó en el patio de la guardia hasta el día en que Jerusalén fue capturada.
