1As dead flies give perfume a bad smell,
so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor.
2The heart of the wise inclines to the right,
but the heart of the fool to the left.
3Even as fools walk along the road,
they lack sense
and show everyone how stupid they are.
4If a ruler’s anger rises against you,
do not leave your post;
calmness can lay great offenses to rest.
5There is an evil I have seen under the sun,
the sort of error that arises from a ruler:
6Fools are put in many high positions,
while the rich occupy the low ones.
7I have seen slaves on horseback,
while princes go on foot like slaves.
8Whoever digs a pit may fall into it;
whoever breaks through a wall may be bitten by a snake.
9Whoever quarries stones may be injured by them;
whoever splits logs may be endangered by them.
10If the ax is dull
and its edge unsharpened,
more strength is needed,
but skill will bring success.
11If a snake bites before it is charmed,
the charmer receives no fee.
12Words from the mouth of the wise are gracious,
but fools are consumed by their own lips.
13At the beginning their words are folly;
at the end they are wicked madness—
14and fools multiply words.
No one knows what is coming—
who can tell someone else what will happen after them?
15The toil of fools wearies them;
they do not know the way to town.
16Woe to the land whose king was a servant10:16 Or king is a child
and whose princes feast in the morning.
17Blessed is the land whose king is of noble birth
and whose princes eat at a proper time—
for strength and not for drunkenness.
18Through laziness, the rafters sag;
because of idle hands, the house leaks.
19A feast is made for laughter,
wine makes life merry,
and money is the answer for everything.
20Do not revile the king even in your thoughts,
or curse the rich in your bedroom,
because a bird in the sky may carry your words,
and a bird on the wing may report what you say.
Dichos de sabiduría
1Las moscas muertas apestan
y echan a perder el perfume.
Así mismo pesa más una pequeña necedad
que la sabiduría y la honra juntas.
2El corazón del sabio se inclina al bien,
pero el del necio busca el mal.
3Aun en el camino por el que va,
el necio revela su falta de inteligencia
y a todos va mostrando lo necio que es.
4Si el ánimo del gobernante se exalta contra ti,
no abandones tu puesto.
La tranquilidad es el remedio para los grandes errores.
5Hay un mal que he visto bajo el sol,
semejante al error que cometen los gobernantes:
6al necio se le dan muchos puestos elevados,
pero a la gente valiosa se les dan los puestos más bajos.
7He visto esclavos montar a caballo
y príncipes andar a pie como esclavos.
8El que cava la fosa, en ella se cae;
al que abre brecha en el muro, la serpiente lo muerde.
9El que pica piedra, con las piedras se hiere;
el que corta leña, podría lastimarse con ella.
10Si el hacha pierde su filo
y no se vuelve a afilar,
hay que golpear con más fuerza,
pero la sabiduría lleva al éxito.
11Si la serpiente muerde antes de ser encantada,
no hay ganancia para el encantador.
12Las palabras del sabio son placenteras,
pero los labios del necio son su ruina;
13sus primeras palabras son necedades
y las últimas, terribles locuras.
14¡Pero no le faltan las palabras!
Nadie sabe lo que ha de suceder
y lo que acontecerá después,
¿quién podría decirlo?
15El trabajo del necio tanto lo fatiga
que ni el camino a la ciudad conoce.
16¡Ay del país cuyo rey es un inmaduro
y cuyos príncipes festejan desde temprano!
17¡Dichoso el país cuyo rey es un noble
y cuyos príncipes comen cuando es debido,
para reponerse y no para embriagarse!
18Por causa del ocio se viene abajo el techo
y por la pereza se desploma la casa.
19Para divertirse se celebra un banquete,
el vino alegra la vida
y el dinero es la respuesta para todo.
20No maldigas al rey ni con el pensamiento,
ni en tu cuarto maldigas al rico,
pues las aves del cielo pueden correr la voz.
Tienen alas y pueden divulgarlo.
