2 Chronicles 20:1-37

Jehoshaphat Defeats Moab and Ammon

1After this, the Moabites and Ammonites with some of the Meunites20:1 Some Septuagint manuscripts; Hebrew Ammonites came to wage war against Jehoshaphat.

2Some people came and told Jehoshaphat, “A vast army is coming against you from Edom,20:2 One Hebrew manuscript; most Hebrew manuscripts, Septuagint and Vulgate Aram from the other side of the Dead Sea. It is already in Hazezon Tamar” (that is, En Gedi). 3Alarmed, Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the Lord, and he proclaimed a fast for all Judah. 4The people of Judah came together to seek help from the Lord; indeed, they came from every town in Judah to seek him.

5Then Jehoshaphat stood up in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem at the temple of the Lord in the front of the new courtyard 6and said:

Lord, the God of our ancestors, are you not the God who is in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. Power and might are in your hand, and no one can withstand you. 7Our God, did you not drive out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel and give it forever to the descendants of Abraham your friend? 8They have lived in it and have built in it a sanctuary for your Name, saying, 9‘If calamity comes upon us, whether the sword of judgment, or plague or famine, we will stand in your presence before this temple that bears your Name and will cry out to you in our distress, and you will hear us and save us.’

10“But now here are men from Ammon, Moab and Mount Seir, whose territory you would not allow Israel to invade when they came from Egypt; so they turned away from them and did not destroy them. 11See how they are repaying us by coming to drive us out of the possession you gave us as an inheritance. 12Our God, will you not judge them? For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.”

13All the men of Judah, with their wives and children and little ones, stood there before the Lord.

14Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Jahaziel son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite and descendant of Asaph, as he stood in the assembly.

15He said: “Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the Lord says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s. 16Tomorrow march down against them. They will be climbing up by the Pass of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the gorge in the Desert of Jeruel. 17You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the Lord will give you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you.’ ”

18Jehoshaphat bowed down with his face to the ground, and all the people of Judah and Jerusalem fell down in worship before the Lord. 19Then some Levites from the Kohathites and Korahites stood up and praised the Lord, the God of Israel, with a very loud voice.

20Early in the morning they left for the Desert of Tekoa. As they set out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Listen to me, Judah and people of Jerusalem! Have faith in the Lord your God and you will be upheld; have faith in his prophets and you will be successful.” 21After consulting the people, Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the Lord and to praise him for the splendor of his20:21 Or him with the splendor of holiness as they went out at the head of the army, saying:

“Give thanks to the Lord,

for his love endures forever.”

22As they began to sing and praise, the Lord set ambushes against the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and they were defeated. 23The Ammonites and Moabites rose up against the men from Mount Seir to destroy and annihilate them. After they finished slaughtering the men from Seir, they helped to destroy one another.

24When the men of Judah came to the place that overlooks the desert and looked toward the vast army, they saw only dead bodies lying on the ground; no one had escaped. 25So Jehoshaphat and his men went to carry off their plunder, and they found among them a great amount of equipment and clothing20:25 Some Hebrew manuscripts and Vulgate; most Hebrew manuscripts corpses and also articles of value—more than they could take away. There was so much plunder that it took three days to collect it. 26On the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Berakah, where they praised the Lord. This is why it is called the Valley of Berakah20:26 Berakah means praise. to this day.

27Then, led by Jehoshaphat, all the men of Judah and Jerusalem returned joyfully to Jerusalem, for the Lord had given them cause to rejoice over their enemies. 28They entered Jerusalem and went to the temple of the Lord with harps and lyres and trumpets.

29The fear of God came on all the surrounding kingdoms when they heard how the Lord had fought against the enemies of Israel. 30And the kingdom of Jehoshaphat was at peace, for his God had given him rest on every side.

The End of Jehoshaphat’s Reign

31So Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah. He was thirty-five years old when he became king of Judah, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-five years. His mother’s name was Azubah daughter of Shilhi. 32He followed the ways of his father Asa and did not stray from them; he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. 33The high places, however, were not removed, and the people still had not set their hearts on the God of their ancestors.

34The other events of Jehoshaphat’s reign, from beginning to end, are written in the annals of Jehu son of Hanani, which are recorded in the book of the kings of Israel.

35Later, Jehoshaphat king of Judah made an alliance with Ahaziah king of Israel, whose ways were wicked. 36He agreed with him to construct a fleet of trading ships.20:36 Hebrew of ships that could go to Tarshish After these were built at Ezion Geber, 37Eliezer son of Dodavahu of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, “Because you have made an alliance with Ahaziah, the Lord will destroy what you have made.” The ships were wrecked and were not able to set sail to trade.20:37 Hebrew sail for Tarshish

모압과 암몬 사람을 격퇴함

1그 후에 모압 사람과 암몬 사람이 일부 마온 사람들과 함께 와서 유다 를 침략하였다.

2그러자 어떤 사람들이 여호사밧에게 와서 이렇게 보고하였다. “엄청난 대군이 왕을 치려고 사해 건너편 에돔에서 와서 엔 – 게디라고도 부르는 하사손 – 다말을 이미 점령하였습니다.”

3여호사밧은 이 보고를 받고 두려워서 여호와께 물어 보기로 결심하고 모든 유다 백성에게 금식 선포령을 내렸다.

4그러자 백성들은 여호와께 도움을 구하려고 전국 각처에서 예루살렘으로 모여들었다.

5백성들이 성전 새 뜰에 모였을 때 여호사밧왕은 군중 가운데 서서

6이렇게 기도하였다. “우리 조상의 하나님 여호와여, 주는 하늘에서 세상 모든 나라를 다스리는 하나님이 아니십니까? 주에게는 힘과 능력이 있으므로 아무도 주를 당해 낼 자가 없습니다.

7우리 하나님이시여, 주는 이스라엘 백성 앞에서 이 땅의 원주민을 쫓아내시고 주의 친구인 아브라함의 후손들에게 이 땅을 영원히 주시지 않았습니까?

8그들은 이 땅에 정착해 살면서 주를 위해 이 성전을 짓고 이렇게 말하였습니다.

9‘만일 전쟁이나 전염병이나 기근과 같은 재앙이 우리에게 닥쳤을 때 우리가 이 성전 앞에서 주께 부르짖으면 주께서는 우리의 기도를 들으시고 우리를 구해 주실 것이다.’

10“여호와여, 지금 암몬 사람과 모압 사람과 20:10 또는 ‘세일산’에돔 사람들이 우리를 공격해 오고 있습니다. 옛날 우리 조상들이 이집트에서 나올 때 주께서는 그들의 땅에 들어가는 것을 허락해 주시지 않았습니다. 그래서 우리 조상들은 그들의 땅을 돌아가면서도 그들을 치지 않았는데

11이제 저들이 우리에게 하는 짓을 보십시오. 저들은 주께서 우리에게 주신 땅에서 우리를 쫓아내려고 왔습니다.

12우리 하나님이시여, 저들을 그냥 두시겠습니까? 우리를 치러 오는 이 엄청난 대군을 막아낼 힘이 우리에게는 없습니다. 우리는 어떻게 해야 좋을지 몰라 주만 바라보고 있습니다.”

13유다 사람들이 부녀자와 어린 아이들까지 모두 여호와 앞에 섰을 때

14여호와의 성령께서 군중 가운데 선 레위 사람 야하시엘을 감동시키셨는데 그는 아삽 집안의 후손으로 맛다냐의 현손이며 여이엘의 증손이요 브나야의 손자이며 스가랴의 아들이었다.

15그러자 야하시엘이 이렇게 외쳤다. “유다와 예루살렘의 모든 백성들이여, 그리고 여호사밧왕이시여, 여호와께서 하시는 말씀을 들으십시오. ‘너희는 이 대군 때문에 두려워하거나 낙심하지 말아라. 이 전쟁은 너희 전쟁이 아니라 나 여호와의 전쟁이다.

16내일 너희는 그들 맞은편으로 내려가거라. 그들이 시스 고개로 올라올 때 너희는 여루엘 광야로 트인 계곡 어귀에서 그들을 만나게 될 것이다.

17그러나 너희는 싸울 필요가 없다. 각자 자기 위치를 정하고 서서 나 여호와가 어떻게 너희를 구원하는지 보아라. 유다와 예루살렘 사람들아, 너희는 조금도 두려워하거나 낙심하지 말고 내일 저들을 향해 나아가거라. 나 여호와가 너희와 함께할 것이다.’ ”

18이 말을 듣고 여호사밧왕이 몸을 굽혀 얼굴을 땅에 대자 유다와 예루살렘 백성들도 엎드려 여호와께 경배하였다.

19그때 고핫 자손과 고라 자손의 레위 사람들은 일어서서 큰 소리로 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와를 찬양하였다.

20다음날 아침 일찍 유다군이 드고아 광야를 향해 출발하려고 할 때 여호사밧왕이 서서 백성들에게 외쳤다. “유다와 예루살렘 백성 여러분, 내 말을 들으십시오. 여러분은 여러분의 하나님 여호와를 신뢰하십시오. 그러면 여호와께서 여러분을 붙들어 주실 것입니다. 여러분은 또 그의 예언자들을 신뢰하십시오. 그러면 여러분이 승리할 것입니다.”

21여호사밧은 백성들과 의논한 후에 찬양대를 조직하여 거룩한 예복을 입히고 그들을 진군하는 부대 선두에 세워 이렇게 찬양하도록 하였다. “여호와께 감사하라. 그의 사랑은 영원하다!”

22-23찬양대가 찬송을 부르자 여호와께서 는 침략군들에게 혼란을 일으켜 자기들끼리 서로 치게 하셨다. 이때 암몬 사람과 모압 사람들이 에돔 사람을 쳐서 그들을 완전히 죽이고, 다음은 암몬 사람과 모압 사람들끼리 싸움이 붙어 서로 치고 죽였다.

24유다 사람들이 광야가 내려다보이는 곳에 이르러 적군이 있는 쪽을 바라다보았을 때 죽은 시체만 땅에 엎드러져 있었고 살아 남은 자는 하나도 없었다.

25그래서 여호사밧왕과 그의 백성들은 그리로 가서 시체를 샅샅이 뒤져 금품과 의복과 그 밖의 전리품을 거둬들였는데 물건이 가져갈 수 없을 정도로 너무 많아서 그것을 거둬들이는 데 3일이나 걸렸다.

26전리품을 약탈한 지 4일째가 되는 날에 그들은 20:26 ‘찬송’ 이라는 뜻.브라가 골짜기에 모여 여호와를 찬양하였다. 그래서 오늘날까지도 그 곳 이름이 ‘찬송의 골짜기’ 로 불려지고 있다.

27이와 같이 여호와께서 그들을 대적의 손에서 기적적으로 구출해 주셨으므로 그들은 여호사밧의 인솔하에 기쁜 마음으로 예루살렘에 돌아왔다.

28그들은 비파와 수금을 타고 나팔을 불면서 예루살렘에 이르러 곧장 여호와의 성전으로 나아갔다.

29모든 인접국들은 여호와께서 이스라엘의 대적과 싸우셨다는 말을 듣고 하나님을 몹시 두려워하였다.

30그래서 여호사밧은 평화로운 가운데 나라를 다스렸다. 이것은 하나님께서 사방으로 그를 안전하게 지켜 주셨기 때문이었다.

여호사밧의 행적

31여호사밧은 35세에 유다 왕이 되어 예루살렘에서 25년을 통치하였다. 그리고 그의 어머니는 실히의 딸인 아수바였다.

32그는 자기 아버지 아사와 같이 여호와께서 보시기에 옳은 일을 하였으나

33산당을 헐지 않았으므로 아직도 백성들의 마음이 그들 조상의 하나님께 진심으로 돌아오지 않았다.

34이 밖에 여호사밧이 행한 모든 일은 하나니의 아들 예후가 쓴 책에 자세히 기록되어 있으며 또 그것은 이스라엘 왕들의 역사책에도 기록되어 있다.

35유다의 여호사밧왕은 말년에 이스라엘의 아하시야왕과 우호 관계를 가졌는데 아하시야는 대단히 악한 왕이었다.

36그들은 에시온 – 게벨에서 다시스로 왕래할 무역선을 만들었다.

37그러나 마레사 사람 도다와후의 아들인 엘리에셀이 여호사밧에게 “왕이 아하시야와 우호 관계를 가졌기 때문에 여호와께서 왕이 만든 배를 부숴 버릴 것입니다” 하고 예언하였다. 그래서 예언한 대로 그 배들은 파선하여 다시스로 갈 수가 없었다.
