Vua Đa-vít trong Tuổi Già
1Vua Đa-vít đã già, tuổi cao; mặc dù người ta đắp bao nhiêu lớp áo, vua vẫn không thấy ấm. 2Các cận thần vua tâu: “Xin cho phép chúng tôi đi tìm một trinh nữ để hầu hạ, săn sóc vua. Nàng sẽ nằm trong lòng vua làm cho vua ấm.”
3Vậy, người ta tìm khắp nước, và họ thấy A-bi-sác, ở Su-nem, là một trinh nữ trẻ đẹp, nên đem nàng về cho vua. 4Nàng rất đẹp, lo săn sóc, hầu hạ vua; nhưng vua không chăn gối với nàng.
A-đô-ni-gia Tự Tôn Làm Vua
5Lúc ấy, con của Đa-vít, Hoàng tử A-đô-ni-gia, mẹ là Hà-ghi, tuyên bố: “Ta sẽ làm vua,” rồi sắm xe ngựa và tuyển năm mươi người chạy trước mở đường. 6Bấy giờ, cha người là Vua Đa-vít, chẳng trách cứ hoặc hỏi xem con mình muốn làm gì. A-đô-ni-gia, em kế Áp-sa-lôm, là người rất đẹp trai.
7A-đô-ni-gia thuyết phục Tướng Giô-áp con bà Xê-ru-gia, Thầy Tế lễ A-bia-tha, họ bằng lòng theo giúp ông. 8Tuy nhiên, Thầy Tế lễ Xa-đốc, Bê-na-gia, con Giê-hô-gia-đa, Tiên tri Na-than, Si-mê-i, Rê-i, và các dũng tướng của Đa-vít không theo A-đô-ni-gia.
9A-đô-ni-gia đi Ên-rô-ghên dâng chiên, bò, và thú vật béo tốt làm tế lễ trên Hòn đá Xô-hê-lết. Ông mời các anh em mình, là những con trai khác của Vua Đa-vít—và tất cả quan chức Giu-đa trong triều đình đến dự. 10Tuy nhiên, ông không mời Tiên tri Na-than, Bê-na-gia, các dũng tướng, và Hoàng tử Sa-lô-môn.
11Khi ấy, Tiên tri Na-than đến nói với Bát-sê-ba, mẹ Sa-lô-môn: “Bà có nghe việc A-đô-ni-gia, con Hà-ghi, lên làm vua trong khi vua cha không biết gì không? 12Bây giờ, tôi xin hiến kế để cứu mạng bà và mạng Sa-lô-môn, con bà. 13Bà đi ngay vào cung tâu với Vua Đa-vít như sau: ‘Có phải vua đã thề với tôi rằng: “Sa-lô-môn, con bà, sẽ kế vị ta và sẽ ngồi trên ngôi ta” không? Thế sao bây giờ A-đô-ni-gia lại làm vua?’ 14Trong khi bà đang nói, tôi sẽ vào xác nhận với vua những lời bà nói là đúng.”
15Bát-sê-ba vào phòng vua nằm. (Lúc ấy vua Đa-vít rất già yếu, và có A-bi-sác ở đó săn sóc vua.) 16Bát-sê-ba cúi lạy vua.
Vua hỏi: “Bà muốn gì?”
17Bà thưa: “Thưa vua, có phải vua thề trước Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời của vua, rằng: ‘Sa-lô-môn, con bà, sẽ kế vị ta và ngồi trên ngôi ta’ không? 18Thưa vua, bây giờ hóa ra A-đô-ni-gia làm vua, trong khi chúa tôi chẳng biết gì cả. 19A-đô-ni-gia tổ chức tế lễ, dâng bò, thú béo, và chiên vô số, đồng thời mời các hoàng tử, Thầy Tế lễ A-bia-tha, và Tướng Giô-áp đến dự, nhưng không mời Sa-lô-môn. 20Bây giờ, toàn dân đang ngóng trông, xem vua chỉ định ai lên ngôi kế vị. 21Còn nếu cứ để thế này, đến ngày vua an giấc với tổ tiên, con tôi là Sa-lô-môn và tôi sẽ bị đối xử như tội nhân.”
22Khi bà đang nói chuyện với vua thì Tiên tri Na-than đến. 23Cận thần của vua báo: “Tiên tri Na-than xin gặp vua.”
Na-than vào, phủ phục cúi chào cung kính. 24Na-than nói: “Muôn tâu, có phải vua đã truyền ngôi cho A-đô-ni-gia không? 25Vì hôm nay hoàng tử đã làm lễ đăng quang và dâng tế những thú vật béo tốt, cùng mời các hoàng tử, Tướng Giô-áp, và Thầy Tế lễ A-bia-tha đến dự. Hiện nay họ đang cùng nhau ăn uống với A-đô-ni-gia và tung hô: ‘Vua A-đô-ni-gia vạn tuế!’ 26Tuy nhiên, tôi cũng như Thầy Tế lễ Xa-đốc, Bê-na-gia, và Sa-lô-môn đều không được mời. 27Có phải vua chủ trương việc này không? Vì không thấy vua cho chúng tôi biết ai là người kế vị và ngồi trên ngôi của vua cả.”
Đa-vít Chọn Sa-lô-môn Làm Vua
28Vua Đa-vít bảo: “Gọi Bát-sê-ba cho ta.” Bà trở vào đứng trước mặt vua. 29Vua thề: “Trước Chúa Hằng Hữu hằng sống, Đấng đã cứu ta khỏi mọi điều nguy hiểm, 30ta xác nhận có thề với bà, nhân danh Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời của Ít-ra-ên rằng: ‘Sa-lô-môn, con bà, sẽ kế vị ta, ngồi trên ngôi thay ta,’ và hôm nay ta thực hiện điều ấy.”
31Bát-sê-ba phủ phục, cúi mặt sát đất, và tung hô: “Đức Vua Đa-vít vạn tuế.”
32Vua truyền: “Gọi Thầy Tế lễ Xa-đốc, Tiên tri Na-than, và Bê-na-gia con Giê-hô-gia-đa vào đây.” Khi họ vào, 33vua ra lệnh: “Các ông dẫn Sa-lô-môn và các bầy tôi ta xuống Ghi-hôn. Sa-lô-môn sẽ cưỡi con la của ta mà đi. 34Tại đó, Thầy Tế lễ Xa-đốc và Tiên tri Na-than sẽ xức dầu cho Sa-lô-môn làm vua Ít-ra-ên; và thổi kèn tung hô: 35‘Vua Sa-lô-môn vạn tuế!’ Xong rồi, các ông sẽ theo Sa-lô-môn về đây. Sa-lô-môn sẽ lên ngồi trên ngôi ta, vì được ta chỉ định làm vua Ít-ra-ên và Giu-đa.”
36Bê-na-gia, con Giê-hô-gia-đa, đáp lời vua: “A-men! Cầu xin Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời của chúa tôi cũng phán định như thế. 37Cầu Chúa Hằng Hữu ở với Sa-lô-môn như đã ở với chúa tôi. Xin Ngài làm cho ngôi nước của Sa-lô-môn lớn hơn cả ngôi nước của Vua Đa-vít!”
38Vậy, Thầy Tế lễ Xa-đốc, Tiên tri Na-than, Bê-na-gia, những người Kê-rê-thít, và Phê-lết nâng Sa-lô-môn lên lưng con la của Vua Đa-vít và rước ông xuống Ghi-hôn. 39Tại đó, Xa-đốc cầm cái sừng đựng dầu lấy từ lều thánh, xức cho Sa-lô-môn. Họ thổi kèn và mọi người tung hô: “Vua Sa-lô-môn vạn tuế!” 40Sau đó, mọi người theo Sa-lô-môn trở về. Họ thổi sáo, hân hoan reo hò vang dậy cả đất.
41A-đô-ni-gia và đoàn tân khách nghe tiếng hò reo khi vừa dự tiệc xong. Tướng Giô-áp nghe tiếng kèn liền hỏi: “Trong thành có gì xảy ra ồn ào như thế?”
42Vừa lúc đó Giô-na-than, con Thầy Tế lễ A-bia-tha đến. A-đô-ni-gia liền bảo: “Vào ngay. Anh là một dũng sĩ chắc đem tin tốt đẹp.”
43Giô-na-than nói: “Vua Đa-vít đã truyền ngôi cho Sa-lô-môn! 44Chính vua đã bảo Thầy Tế lễ Xa-đốc, Tiên tri Na-than, Bê-na-gia, con Giê-hô-gia-đa, và Phê-lết đỡ Sa-lô-môn lên cưỡi con la của vua. 45Thầy Tế lễ Xa-đốc và Tiên tri Na-than đã xức dầu cho Sa-lô-môn làm vua tại Ghi-hôn. Sau đó, họ trở về ăn mừng, làm náo động cả thành. Đó là tiếng vang các ông đã nghe. 46Sa-lô-môn lên ngồi trên ngôi, 47còn các quần thần của vua đều đến mừng Vua Đa-vít rằng: ‘Cầu xin Đức Chúa Trời làm cho Sa-lô-môn nổi danh hơn cả vua, cho ngôi nước người lớn hơn ngôi nước vua.’ Vua vẫn ở trên giường đáp lễ: 48‘Ca ngợi Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời của Ít-ra-ên, vì ngày nay Ngài cho có một người ngồi trên ngôi ta, trong khi ta còn đây để được thấy tận mắt.’”
49Bấy giờ, Các tân khách của A-đô-ni-gia đều sợ hãi và bỏ chạy. 50A-đô-ni-gia vì sợ Sa-lô-môn giết, nên chạy vào nắm lấy sừng bàn thờ. 51Người ta báo cho Sa-lô-môn hay: “A-đô-ni-gia vì sợ Vua Sa-lô-môn nên đã chạy đến nắm sừng bàn thờ và cầu xin: ‘Hôm nay vua vui lòng thề sẽ không giết tôi bằng gươm.’”
52Sa-lô-môn nói: “Nếu anh ta chứng tỏ là một người xứng đáng, một sợi tóc cũng không mất; nhưng nếu làm điều sai trái, anh ta sẽ chết.” 53Vua Sa-lô-môn sai người đem A-đô-ni-gia ra khỏi bàn thờ. Ông đến cúi lạy trước mặt Vua Sa-lô-môn rồi vua bảo: “Anh về nhà đi.”

11¶ Wherefore Nathan spake unto Bath-sheba the mother of Solomon, saying, Hast thou not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith doth reign, and David our lord knoweth it not? 12Now therefore come, let me, I pray thee, give thee counsel, that thou mayest save thine own life, and the life of thy son Solomon. 13Go and get thee in unto king David, and say unto him, Didst not thou, my lord, O king, swear unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? why then doth Adonijah reign? 14Behold, while thou yet talkest there with the king, I also will come in after thee, and confirm thy words.1.14 confirm: Heb. fill up
15¶ And Bath-sheba went in unto the king into the chamber: and the king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite ministered unto the king. 16And Bath-sheba bowed, and did obeisance unto the king. What to thee? 17And she said unto him, My lord, thou swarest by the LORD thy God unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne. 18And now, behold, Adonijah reigneth; and now, my lord the king, thou knowest it not: 19And he hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the sons of the king, and Abiathar the priest, and Joab the captain of the host: but Solomon thy servant hath he not called. 20And thou, my lord, O king, the eyes of all Israel are upon thee, that thou shouldest tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him. 21Otherwise it shall come to pass, when my lord the king shall sleep with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon shall be counted offenders.1.21 offenders: Heb. sinners
22¶ And, lo, while she yet talked with the king, Nathan the prophet also came in. 23And they told the king, saying, Behold Nathan the prophet. And when he was come in before the king, he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground. 24And Nathan said, My lord, O king, hast thou said, Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? 25For he is gone down this day, and hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the king’s sons, and the captains of the host, and Abiathar the priest; and, behold, they eat and drink before him, and say, God save king Adonijah.1.25 God…: Heb. 28¶ Then king David answered and said, Call me Bath-sheba. 32¶ And king David said, Call me Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada. And they came before the king. 33The king also said unto them, Take with you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride upon mine own mule, and bring him down to Gihon:1.33 mine…: Heb. which belongeth to me 34And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel: and blow ye with the trumpet, and say, God save king Solomon. 35Then ye shall come up after him, that he may come and sit upon my throne; for he shall be king in my stead: and I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and over Judah. 36And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, and said, Amen: the LORD God of my lord the king say so too. 37As the LORD hath been with my lord the king, even so be he with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord king David. 38So Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, went down, and caused Solomon to ride upon king David’s mule, and brought him to Gihon. 39And Zadok the priest took an horn of oil out of the tabernacle, and anointed Solomon. And they blew the trumpet; and all the people said, God save king Solomon. 40And all the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth rent with the sound of them.1.40 pipes: or, flutes
41¶ And Adonijah and all the guests that were with him heard it as they had made an end of eating. And when Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, Wherefore is this noise of the city being in an uproar? 42And while he yet spake, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came: and Adonijah said unto him, Come in; for thou art a valiant man, and bringest good tidings. 43And Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, Verily our lord king David hath made Solomon king. 44And the king hath sent with him Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, and they have caused him to ride upon the king’s mule: 45And Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon: and they are come up from thence rejoicing, so that the city rang again. This is the noise that ye have heard. 46And also Solomon sitteth on the throne of the kingdom. 47And moreover the king’s servants came to bless our lord king David, saying, God make the name of Solomon better than thy name, and make his throne greater than thy throne. And the king bowed himself upon the bed. 48And also thus said the king, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, which hath given one to sit on my throne this day, mine eyes even seeing it. 49And all the guests that were with Adonijah were afraid, and rose up, and went every man his way.
50¶ And Adonijah feared because of Solomon, and arose, and went, and caught hold on the horns of the altar. 51And it was told Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonijah feareth king Solomon: for, lo, he hath caught hold on the horns of the altar, saying, Let king Solomon swear unto me to day that he will not slay his servant with the sword. 52And Solomon said, If he will shew himself a worthy man, there shall not an hair of him fall to the earth: but if wickedness shall be found in him, he shall die. 53So king Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and bowed himself to king Solomon: and Solomon said unto him, Go to thine house.
