1มีผู้ก่อความไม่สงบคนหนึ่งชื่อเชบาบุตรบิครีชาวเบนยามินเผอิญอยู่ที่นั่น เขาเป่าแตรเขาสัตว์และร้องตะโกนว่า
“เราไม่มีส่วนอะไรกับดาวิด
เราไม่เกี่ยวข้องอะไรกับบุตรเจสซี!
พี่น้องอิสราเอลทั้งหลายเอ๋ย จงกลับบ้านกันเถิด!”
2คนอิสราเอลทั้งปวงจึงทิ้งดาวิดไปติดตามเชบาบุตรบิครี แต่คนยูดาห์อยู่เคียงข้างกษัตริย์ของตน ตามเสด็จตลอดทางจากแม่น้ำจอร์แดนสู่กรุงเยรูซาเล็ม
3เมื่อดาวิดเสด็จมาถึงวังในเยรูซาเล็ม พระองค์ทรงกักตัวสนมทั้งสิบซึ่งทรงทิ้งไว้ให้คอยรักษาวังนั้นไว้ที่ตำหนักแห่งหนึ่ง และให้ได้รับการเลี้ยงดูตามความต้องการ แต่กษัตริย์ไม่ได้รับเป็นสนมอีกต่อไป นางสนมเหล่านั้นจึงถูกกักอยู่ในฐานะแม่ม่ายจนวันตาย
4จากนั้นกษัตริย์ตรัสสั่งอามาสาว่า “จงระดมพลยูดาห์มาที่นี่ภายในสามวัน แล้วตัวเจ้าก็จงมาด้วย” 5แต่เมื่ออามาสาออกไประดมพลยูดาห์ เขาใช้เวลาเกินกว่าที่กษัตริย์กำหนดไว้
6ดาวิดตรัสกับอาบีชัยว่า “เชบาบุตรบิครีจะเป็นภัยต่อเรายิ่งกว่าอับซาโลมเสียอีก จงนำคนของเราตามล่าเอาตัวเขามา ก่อนที่เขาจะหนีเข้าเมืองป้อมปราการพ้นมือเราไปได้” 7คนของโยอาบ คนเคเรธี และคนเปเลท กับนักรบแกล้วกล้าทั้งหลายจึงยกออกไปจากกรุงเยรูซาเล็มภายใต้การนำของอาบีชัยเพื่อตามล่าเชบาบุตรบิครี
8ขณะที่พวกเขามาถึงศิลาใหญ่แห่งกิเบโอน อามาสามาพบกับพวกเขาที่นั่น โยอาบแต่งชุดออกศึก คาดดาบสั้นพร้อมฝักไว้ที่เอว เขาก้าวเข้าไปทักทายอามาสาและแอบชักดาบสั้นออกจากฝัก
9โยอาบพูดว่า “เป็นอย่างไรบ้างน้องชาย?” แล้วใช้มือขวาจับหนวดของอามาสาทำท่าเหมือนจะจูบ 10อามาสาไม่ทันสังเกตดาบสั้นในมือโยอาบ โยอาบจึงแทงเข้าที่ท้องจนไส้ทะลักออกมาที่พื้น โดยไม่ต้องแทงซ้ำ อามาสาตายคาที่ แล้วโยอาบกับอาบีชัยน้องชายก็ตามล่าเชบาบุตรบิครีต่อไป
11ทหารคนหนึ่งของโยอาบยืนข้างร่างของอามาสาและกล่าวว่า “ผู้ใดชื่นชอบโยอาบและผู้ใดเป็นฝ่ายดาวิด จงตามโยอาบมา” 12ส่วนอามาสานอนจมกองเลือดอยู่กลางถนน และเมื่อทหารคนนั้นเห็นทหารทั้งหมดหยุดดูศพของอามาสา เขาจึงลากศพจากถนนไปทิ้งไว้กลางทุ่งและโยนเสื้อผ้าคลุมไว้ 13เมื่อกำจัดร่างของอามาสาออกไปให้พ้นทางแล้ว ทุกคนต่างก็สมทบกับโยอาบ ออกตามล่าเชบาบุตรบิครี
14ฝ่ายเชบาเดินทางไปทั่วทุกเผ่าของอิสราเอลไปยังอาเบลเบธมาอาคาห์20:14 หรืออาเบลจนถึงเบธมาอาคาห์เช่นเดียวกับข้อ 15 และทั่วภูมิภาคของชาวเบไรต์ซึ่งรวมตัวกันมาติดตามเขา 15กองกำลังของโยอาบมาโอบล้อมเชบาในอาเบลเบธมาอาคาห์ ก่อเชิงเทินใหญ่ต่อกับกำแพงเมือง แล้วเริ่มทลายกำแพง 16หญิงเจ้าปัญญาคนหนึ่งร้องบอกจากตัวเมืองว่า “โปรดฟังหน่อยเถิด เรียกท่านโยอาบมาทางนี้ ดิฉันขอพูดด้วย” 17เมื่อโยอาบมาถึง หญิงนั้นถามว่า “ท่านคือโยอาบหรือ?”
เขาตอบว่า “ใช่”
นางกล่าวว่า “โปรดฟังสิ่งที่ผู้รับใช้ของท่านจะพูด”
โยอาบตอบว่า “เราฟังอยู่”
18นางกล่าวต่อไปว่า “เคยมีคำกล่าวไว้ว่า ‘ไปเอาคำตอบกับอาเบล’ แล้วเรื่องก็เรียบร้อย 19เราเป็นพวกที่รักสันติและจงรักภักดีในอิสราเอล ท่านกำลังพยายามทำลายเมืองแม่ของอิสราเอล เหตุใดท่านจึงต้องการที่จะกลืนกินมรดกขององค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า?”
20โยอาบตอบว่า “ขอให้เรื่องนี้ห่างไกลจากเรา! เราไม่เคยคิดที่จะกลืนกินหรือทำลายเมืองนี้เลย! 21เราต้องการแต่เพียงได้ตัวคนที่ชื่อเชบาบุตรบิครีจากแดนเทือกเขาแห่งเอฟราอิมซึ่งกบฏต่อกษัตริย์ดาวิด หากเจ้าเอาตัวชายคนนี้มาให้ เราก็จะถอนกำลังไปจากเมืองนี้”
หญิงนั้นตอบว่า “เราจะโยนหัวเขาข้ามกำแพงลงมาให้ท่าน”
22หญิงนั้นจึงไปหาพวกชาวเมือง และให้คำปรึกษาอย่างฉลาดหลักแหลม พวกเขาก็ตัดศีรษะเชบาบุตรบิครีโยนลงมาให้โยอาบ โยอาบจึงเป่าแตรเขาสัตว์เรียกกองทหารให้แยกย้ายจากเมืองนั้นกลับบ้าน ส่วนโยอาบกลับมาเข้าเฝ้ากษัตริย์ที่กรุงเยรูซาเล็ม
23โยอาบเป็นผู้บัญชาการกองทัพทั้งหมดของอิสราเอล เบไนยาห์บุตรเยโฮยาดาเป็นผู้บัญชาการ คนเคเรธีและคนเปเลท 24อาโดนีรัม20:24 ภาษาฮีบรูว่าอาโดรัม(ดู1พกษ.4:6 และ 5:14)เป็นผู้ดูแลคนงานโยธา เยโฮชาฟัทบุตรอาหิลูดเป็นอาลักษณ์หลวง 25เชวาเป็นราชเลขา ศาโดกกับอาบียาธาร์เป็นปุโรหิต 26และอิราแห่งยาอีร์เป็นปุโรหิตของดาวิด
1And there happened to be there a man of Belial, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjamite: and he blew a trumpet, and said, We have no part in David, neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to his tents, O Israel. 2So every man of Israel went up from after David, and followed Sheba the son of Bichri: but the men of Judah clave unto their king, from Jordan even to Jerusalem.
3¶ And David came to his house at Jerusalem; and the king took the ten women his concubines, whom he had left to keep the house, and put them in ward, and fed them, but went not in unto them. 4¶ Then said the king to Amasa, Assemble me the men of Judah within three days, and be thou here present.20.4 Assemble: Heb. Call 6And David said to Abishai, Now shall Sheba the son of Bichri do us more harm than did Absalom: take thou thy lord’s servants, and pursue after him, lest he get him fenced cities, and escape us.20.6 escape…: Heb. deliver himself from our eyes 7And there went out after him Joab’s men, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, and all the mighty men: and they went out of Jerusalem, to pursue after Sheba the son of Bichri. 8When they were at the great stone which is in Gibeon, Amasa went before them. And Joab’s garment that he had put on was girded unto him, and upon it a girdle with a sword fastened upon his loins in the sheath thereof; and as he went forth it fell out. 9And Joab said to Amasa, Art thou in health, my brother? And Joab took Amasa by the beard with the right hand to kiss him. 10But Amasa took no heed to the sword that was in Joab’s hand: so he smote him therewith in the fifth rib, and shed out his bowels to the ground, and struck him not again; and he died. So Joab and Abishai his brother pursued after Sheba the son of Bichri.20.10 struck…: Heb. doubled not his stroke 11And one of Joab’s men stood by him, and said, He that favoureth Joab, and he that is for David, let him go after Joab. 12And Amasa wallowed in blood in the midst of the highway. And when the man saw that all the people stood still, he removed Amasa out of the highway into the field, and cast a cloth upon him, when he saw that every one that came by him stood still. 13When he was removed out of the highway, all the people went on after Joab, to pursue after Sheba the son of Bichri.
14¶ And he went through all the tribes of Israel unto Abel, and to Beth-maachah, and all the Berites: and they were gathered together, and went also after him. 15And they came and besieged him in Abel of Beth-maachah, and they cast up a bank against the city, and it stood in the trench: and all the people that were with Joab battered the wall, to throw it down.20.15 in the trench: or, against the outmost wall20.15 battered: Heb. marred to throw down
16¶ Then cried a wise woman out of the city, Hear, hear; say, I pray you, unto Joab, Come near hither, that I may speak with thee. 17And when he was come near unto her, the woman said, Art thou Joab? And he answered, I am he. Then she said unto him, Hear the words of thine handmaid. And he answered, I do hear. 18Then she spake, saying, They were wont to speak in old time, saying, They shall surely ask counsel at Abel: and so they ended the matter.20.18 They were…: or, They plainly spake in the beginning, saying, Surely they will ask of Abel, and so make an end 19I am one of them that are peaceable and faithful in Israel: thou seekest to destroy a city and a mother in Israel: why wilt thou swallow up the inheritance of the LORD? 20And Joab answered and said, Far be it, far be it from me, that I should swallow up or destroy. 21The matter is not so: but a man of mount Ephraim, Sheba the son of Bichri by name, hath lifted up his hand against the king, even against David: deliver him only, and I will depart from the city. And the woman said unto Joab, Behold, his head shall be thrown to thee over the wall.20.21 by name: Heb. by his name 22Then the woman went unto all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri, and cast it out to Joab. And he blew a trumpet, and they retired from the city, every man to his tent. 23¶ Now Joab was over all the host of Israel: and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and over the Pelethites: 24And Adoram was over the tribute: and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder:20.24 recorder: or, remembrancer 25And Sheva was scribe: and Zadok and Abiathar were the priests: 26And Ira also the Jairite was a chief ruler about David.20.26 a chief…: or, a prince
