อย่าลำเอียง
1พี่น้องทั้งหลาย ในฐานะที่ท่านเป็นผู้เชื่อในองค์พระเยซูคริสต์เจ้าผู้ทรงพระเกียรติสิริของเรา อย่าลำเอียงเลย 2สมมุติว่ามีคนหนึ่งใส่แหวนทอง แต่งกายโก้หรูมาในที่ประชุมของพวกท่าน และมีคนยากจนแต่งตัวซอมซ่อเข้ามาเช่นกัน 3ถ้าท่านให้ความสนใจคนที่แต่งกายโก้หรูเป็นพิเศษและกล่าวว่า “เชิญท่านนั่งที่ดีๆ ตรงนี้เถิด” แต่กล่าวกับคนยากจนว่า “จงไปยืนที่นั่น” หรือกล่าวว่า “จงนั่งที่พื้นแทบเท้าของเรา” 4ท่านก็แบ่งชนชั้นและตัดสินคนด้วยความคิดอธรรมไม่ใช่หรือ?
5พี่น้องที่รักจงฟังเถิด พระเจ้าทรงเลือกผู้ยากไร้ในสายตาชาวโลกให้ร่ำรวยในความเชื่อ และให้ครองอาณาจักรที่ทรงสัญญาไว้แก่บรรดาผู้ที่รักพระองค์ไม่ใช่หรือ? 6แต่นี่ท่านกลับดูถูกคนจน คนรวยไม่ใช่หรือที่ขูดรีดจากท่าน? ไม่ใช่พวกเขาหรอกหรือที่ลากตัวท่านขึ้นโรงขึ้นศาล? 7คนพวกนี้ไม่ใช่หรือที่พูดลบหลู่พระนามอันทรงเกียรติของพระองค์? และพวกท่านก็เป็นของพระองค์
8หากท่านปฏิบัติตามพระบัญญัติของพระเจ้าในพระคัมภีร์อย่างแท้จริงที่ว่า “จงรักเพื่อนบ้านเหมือนรักตนเอง”2:8 ลนต.19:18 ท่านก็ทำถูกแล้ว 9แต่ถ้าท่านลำเอียงท่านก็ทำบาป และบทบัญญัติก็ได้ตัดสินแล้วว่าท่านเป็นผู้ละเมิดบทบัญญัติ 10เพราะผู้ใดทำตามบทบัญญัติทั้งหมดแต่พลาดไปจุดเดียวก็มีความผิดเท่ากับละเมิดบทบัญญัติทั้งหมด 11เนื่องจากพระองค์ผู้ตรัสว่า “อย่าล่วงประเวณี”2:11 อพย.20:14ฉธบ.5:18 นั้นยังตรัสด้วยว่า “อย่าฆ่าคน”2:11 อพย.20:13ฉธบ.5:17 แม้ท่านไม่ได้ล่วงประเวณี แต่ได้ฆ่าคน ท่านก็ละเมิดบทบัญญัติ
12จงพูดและทำอย่างคนที่จะรับการตัดสินด้วยกฎซึ่งให้เสรีภาพ 13เพราะผู้ที่ไร้ความเมตตาจะถูกตัดสินลงโทษโดยไร้ความเมตตาปรานี ความเมตตาย่อมมีชัยเหนือการพิพากษา!
ความเชื่อและการกระทำ
14พี่น้องทั้งหลาย ถ้าคนหนึ่งอ้างว่ามีความเชื่อแต่ไม่สำแดงเป็นการกระทำจะมีประโยชน์อะไร? ความเชื่อแบบนี้จะช่วยเขาให้รอดได้หรือ? 15สมมุติว่าพี่น้องชายหญิงคนใดขาดแคลนเสื้อผ้าและอาหารประจำวัน 16ถ้าผู้ใดในพวกท่านพูดกับเขาว่า “ไปเถิด ขอให้ท่านเป็นสุข รักษาตัวให้อบอุ่นและอิ่มหนำเถิด” แต่ไม่เอื้อเฟื้อปัจจัยเลี้ยงชีพแก่เขาจะมีประโยชน์อันใด? 17เช่นกันความเชื่อเพียงอย่างเดียวโดยไม่มีการกระทำก็เป็นความเชื่อที่ไร้ประโยชน์2:17 หรือตายแล้ว
18แต่บางคนจะกล่าวว่า “ท่านมีความเชื่อส่วนข้าพเจ้ามีการกระทำ” จงแสดงความเชื่อของท่านที่ไม่มีการกระทำมา แล้วข้าพเจ้าจะแสดงความเชื่อของข้าพเจ้าด้วยสิ่งที่ข้าพเจ้ากระทำ 19ท่านเชื่อว่ามีพระเจ้าองค์เดียวก็ดีแล้ว! แม้พวกผีมารก็ยังเชื่อเช่นนั้นและกลัวจนตัวสั่น
20คนเขลาเอ๋ย ท่านต้องการหลักฐานว่าความเชื่อโดยปราศจากการกระทำนั้นเปล่าประโยชน์2:20 สำเนาต้นฉบับเก่าแก่บางสำเนาว่าตายแล้วใช่ไหม? 21พระเจ้าทรงถือว่าอับราฮัมบรรพบุรุษของเราเป็นผู้ชอบธรรมก็เพราะการกระทำของเขาที่ถวายอิสอัคบุตรชายบนแท่นบูชาไม่ใช่หรือ? 22ท่านก็เห็นแล้วว่าความเชื่อและการกระทำของเขาทำงานควบคู่กัน ความเชื่อของเขาครบถ้วนสมบูรณ์โดยสิ่งที่เขาได้ทำ 23และเป็นจริงตามพระคัมภีร์ที่ว่า “อับราฮัมเชื่อพระเจ้า และความเชื่อนี้พระองค์ทรงถือว่าเป็นความชอบธรรมของเขา”2:23 ปฐก.15:6 และเขาได้ชื่อว่าเป็นสหายของพระเจ้า 24จะเห็นได้ว่าผู้ใดจะถูกนับว่าชอบธรรมก็ด้วยการกระทำของเขา ไม่ใช่ด้วยความเชื่ออย่างเดียว
25เช่นกันแม้แต่ราหับหญิงโสเภณียังถูกนับว่าชอบธรรมเพราะการกระทำของนางไม่ใช่หรือ? เมื่อนางให้ที่พักแก่คนสอดแนมและช่วยส่งพวกเขาไปอีกทางหนึ่ง 26ร่างกายที่ปราศจากวิญญาณตายแล้วฉันใด ความเชื่อที่ปราศจากการกระทำก็ตายแล้วฉันนั้น
Favouritism forbidden
1My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favouritism. 2Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in. 3If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, ‘Here’s a good seat for you,’ but say to the poor man, ‘You stand there’ or ‘Sit on the floor by my feet,’ 4have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?
5Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him? 6But you have dishonoured the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court? 7Are they not the ones who are blaspheming the noble name of him to whom you belong?
8If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself,’2:8 Lev. 19:18 you are doing right. 9But if you show favouritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as law-breakers. 10For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. 11For he who said, ‘You shall not commit adultery,’2:11 Exodus 20:14; Deut. 5:18 also said, ‘You shall not murder.’2:11 Exodus 20:13; Deut. 5:17 If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a law-breaker.
12Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom, 13because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.
Faith and deeds
14What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? 15Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16If one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
18But someone will say, ‘You have faith; I have deeds.’
Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds. 19You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that – and shudder.
20You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless2:20 Some early manuscripts dead? 21Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. 23And the scripture was fulfilled that says, ‘Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,’2:23 Gen. 15:6 and he was called God’s friend. 24You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.
25In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? 26As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.
