1ต่อมาชนอิสราเอลก็ทำชั่วในสายพระเนตรขององค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าอีก และพระองค์ทรงมอบพวกเขาไว้ในมือของชาวมีเดียนเป็นเวลาเจ็ดปี 2เพราะว่าชาวมีเดียนมีกำลังเข้มแข็งและโหดร้าย จนชาวอิสราเอลต้องหนีไปหาที่หลบซ่อนอยู่ในโพรงตามภูเขา ในถ้ำ และที่มั่นต่างๆ 3เมื่อใดก็ตามที่ชนอิสราเอลหว่านพืช ชาวมีเดียน ชาวอามาเลข และชนชาติอื่นๆ ทางตะวันออกจะพากันมาบุกรุกพื้นที่ 4พวกเขามาตั้งค่ายและทำลายพืชพันธุ์ตลอดทางไปถึงกาซา ไม่เหลือสิ่งมีชีวิตสักอย่างเดียวให้ชนอิสราเอล ไม่ว่าแกะ วัว หรือลา 5พวกเขากรูเข้ามาพร้อมกับฝูงสัตว์ เต็นท์ของเขาเหมือนตั๊กแตนฝูงมหึมา ทั้งคนทั้งอูฐนับไม่ถ้วน พวกเขาบุกรุกเข้ามาเพื่อทำลายล้างดินแดน 6ชาวมีเดียนทำให้ชนอิสราเอลสิ้นเนื้อประดาตัว จนต้องร้องทูลให้องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าทรงช่วย
7เมื่อชนอิสราเอลร้องทูลองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าเพราะคนมีเดียน 8พระองค์ทรงส่งผู้เผยพระวจนะคนหนึ่งมาแจ้งว่า “พระยาห์เวห์พระเจ้าแห่งอิสราเอลตรัสดังนี้ว่า เราได้นำเจ้าออกมาจากอียิปต์ ออกจากแดนทาส 9เรากอบกู้เจ้าจากอำนาจของอียิปต์ จากเงื้อมมือของบรรดาผู้ที่กดขี่ข่มเหงเจ้า เราขับไล่ศัตรูออกไปต่อหน้าเจ้า ยกดินแดนของเขาให้เจ้า 10เราบอกเจ้าว่า ‘เราคือพระยาห์เวห์พระเจ้าของเจ้า อย่ากราบไหว้พระต่างๆ ของชาวอาโมไรต์ในดินแดนซึ่งเจ้าอาศัยอยู่’ แต่เจ้าก็ไม่ฟังเรา”
11ทูตขององค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้ามานั่งอยู่ใต้ต้นโอ๊กในโอฟราห์ ซึ่งเป็นที่ดินของโยอาชตระกูลอาบีเอเซอร์ กิเดโอนบุตรโยอาชกำลังนวดข้าวสาลีอยู่ในบ่อย่ำองุ่น เพื่อให้พ้นจากสายตาชาวมีเดียน 12ทูตขององค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าปรากฏแก่กิเดโอนและกล่าวว่า “นักรบผู้เกรียงไกรเอ๋ย องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าสถิตกับท่าน”
13กิเดโอนตอบว่า “ท่านขอรับ หากองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าสถิตกับพวกข้าพเจ้า ทำไมเหตุการณ์ทั้งปวงนี้จึงเกิดขึ้นกับพวกข้าพเจ้าเล่า? ไหนล่ะการอัศจรรย์ทั้งปวงซึ่งบรรพบุรุษเคยเล่าให้ฟัง พวกเขาพูดว่า ‘องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าทรงนำพวกเราออกมาจากอียิปต์ไม่ใช่หรือ?’ แต่บัดนี้องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าได้ทรงทอดทิ้งพวกเรา และมอบเราไว้ในเงื้อมมือของชาวมีเดียน”
14องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าทรงหันมาหาเขาและตรัสว่า “จงไปช่วยอิสราเอลให้พ้นจากเงื้อมมือของชาวมีเดียนด้วยกำลังที่เจ้ามีอยู่ เราใช้เจ้าไปไม่ใช่หรือ?”
15แต่กิเดโอนทูลถามว่า “พระองค์เจ้าข้า6:15 หรือท่านเจ้าข้า ข้าพระองค์นี่หรือจะไปช่วยกู้อิสราเอล? ตระกูลของข้าพระองค์อ่อนแอที่สุดในเผ่ามนัสเสห์ และข้าพระองค์ก็เป็นผู้เล็กน้อยที่สุดในครอบครัว”
16องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าตรัสว่า “เราจะอยู่กับเจ้า เจ้าจะฟาดฟันชาวมีเดียนทั้งหมด”
17กิเดโอนทูลตอบว่า “หากพระองค์ทรงโปรด ขอทรงให้หมายสำคัญเพื่อแสดงว่าเป็นพระองค์จริงๆ ที่กำลังตรัสกับข้าพระองค์อยู่ 18โปรดอย่าเพิ่งเสด็จไปไหนจนกว่าข้าพระองค์จะกลับมาและนำเครื่องบูชามาถวายพระองค์”
และพระองค์ตรัสว่า “เราจะรอจนเจ้ากลับมา”
19กิเดโอนกลับเข้าไปจัดแจงปรุงลูกแพะตัวหนึ่ง และทำขนมปังไม่ใส่เชื้อจากแป้งประมาณ 22 ลิตร6:19 ภาษาฮีบรูว่าหนึ่งเอฟาห์ จากนั้นนำเนื้อใส่กระจาดและน้ำแกงใส่หม้อมาถวายทูตองค์นั้นที่ใต้ต้นโอ๊ก
20ทูตของพระเจ้ากล่าวกับกิเดโอนว่า “จงวางเนื้อและขนมปังไม่ใส่เชื้อไว้บนหินก้อนนี้ และเอาน้ำแกงราด” กิเดโอนก็ปฏิบัติตามคำสั่ง 21ทูตขององค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้ายื่นปลายไม้เท้าแตะเนื้อและขนมปังไม่ใส่เชื้อนั้น ไฟก็ลุกขึ้นจากก้อนหิน เผาเนื้อและขนมปังจนหมด แล้วทูตขององค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าก็หายตัวไป 22เมื่อกิเดโอนตระหนักว่าเป็นทูตขององค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าก็ร้องว่า “ข้าแต่พระยาห์เวห์องค์เจ้าชีวิต! ข้าพระองค์ได้เห็นทูตขององค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าต่อหน้าต่อตา!”
23แต่องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าตรัสกับกิเดโอนว่า “จงมีสันติสุขเถิด! อย่ากลัวเลย เจ้าจะไม่ตาย”
24กิเดโอนจึงสร้างแท่นบูชาขึ้นที่นั่นถวายแด่องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าและขนานนามว่า “พระยาห์เวห์ทรงเป็นสันติสุข” แท่นนี้อยู่ที่โอฟราห์ ในที่ดินของตระกูลอาบีเอเซอร์ตราบจนทุกวันนี้
25ในคืนนั้นเององค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าตรัสสั่งกิเดโอนว่า “จงนำวัวผู้ตัวที่สองอายุเจ็ดปี6:25 หรือจงนำวัวที่โตเต็มที่จากฝูงสัตว์ของบิดาของเจ้ามา และรื้อแท่นบูชาพระบาอัลของบิดาและฟันเสาเจ้าแม่อาเชราห์6:25 คือ สัญลักษณ์ของเจ้าแม่อาเชราห์ เช่นเดียวกับที่อื่นๆ ในพระธรรมผู้วินิจฉัยซึ่งตั้งอยู่ใกล้ๆ ด้วย 26จากนั้นจงสร้างแท่นบูชาที่เหมาะสม6:26 หรือเอาแผ่นหินมาเรียงซ้อนกันขึ้นเป็นแท่นบูชาสำหรับพระยาห์เวห์พระเจ้าของเจ้าขึ้นบนยอดเนินเขาแห่งนั้น ใช้ไม้ที่ฟันจากเสาเจ้าแม่อาเชราห์ เป็นฟืนเผาวัวผู้ตัวที่สอง6:26 หรือที่โตเต็มที่เช่นเดียวกับข้อ 28เป็นเครื่องเผาบูชา”
27กิเดโอนจึงพาคนรับใช้สิบคนมาด้วย และทำตามพระบัญชาขององค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าแต่เขาไม่กล้าทำในเวลากลางวันเพราะกลัวสมาชิกในครอบครัวและชาวเมืองนั้น เขาจึงแอบทำในเวลากลางคืน
28เช้าวันรุ่งขึ้นเมื่อชาวเมืองตื่นขึ้นมาพบว่าแท่นบูชาพระบาอัลถูกรื้อทำลาย เสาเจ้าแม่อาเชราห์ข้างแท่นถูกโค่น และมีวัวผู้ตัวที่สองเผาบูชาบนแท่นที่เพิ่งสร้างขึ้นมาใหม่!
29ผู้คนต่างถามกันว่า “ใครทำอย่างนี้?”
เมื่อเขาสืบเสาะอย่างถี่ถ้วนก็ได้รับคำบอกเล่าว่า “กิเดโอนบุตรของโยอาชเป็นคนทำ”
30คนในเมืองนั้นเรียกร้องกับโยอาชว่า “เอาตัวลูกชายของเจ้าออกมา เขาต้องตายที่บังอาจมารื้อแท่นบูชาของพระบาอัล แล้วยังฟันเสาเจ้าแม่อาเชราห์ทิ้งอีก”
31แต่โยอาชตอบฝูงชนที่กำลังโกรธแค้นซึ่งห้อมล้อมเขาว่า “พวกท่านจะช่วยออกโรงแทนพระบาอัลหรือ? จะพยายามช่วยพระบาอัลหรืออย่างไร? ใครสู้แทนพระบาอัลจะต้องถูกฆ่าตายภายในเช้าวันนี้! ถ้าบาอัลเป็นเทพเจ้าจริงๆ เขาย่อมดูแลปกป้องตัวเองได้เวลาที่มีคนมารื้อแท่นของเขา” 32ตั้งแต่วันนั้นมาเขาเรียกกิเดโอนว่าเยรุบบาอัล6:32 แปลว่า ให้บาอัลต่อสู้ โดยกล่าวว่า “ให้พระบาอัลต่อสู้กับเขา” เพราะเขาได้ทำลายแท่นบูชาของพระบาอัล
33ครั้งนั้นบรรดาชาวมีเดียน ชาวอามาเลข และชนชาติอื่นๆ ทางตะวันออก ผนึกกำลังกันยกข้ามแม่น้ำจอร์แดนมาตั้งค่ายอยู่ที่หุบเขายิสเรเอล 34แล้วพระวิญญาณขององค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าลงมาเหนือกิเดโอน เขาก็เป่าแตรเรียกคนตระกูลอาบีเอเซอร์ให้ติดตามเขา 35เขายังส่งผู้สื่อสารไปทั่วเขตมนัสเสห์ อาเชอร์ เศบูลุน และนัฟทาลีอีกด้วย เพื่อเรียกรวบรวมกำลังพลและพวกเขาก็ตอบรับ
36กิเดโอนกราบทูลพระเจ้าว่า “หากพระองค์จะทรงใช้ข้าพระองค์กอบกู้อิสราเอลจริงๆ ตามที่ทรงสัญญาไว้ 37ดูเถิด ข้าพระองค์จะวางขนแกะไว้ที่ลานนวดข้าว หากขนแกะเปียกน้ำค้างแต่พื้นดินแห้ง ข้าพระองค์ก็จะรู้ได้ว่าพระองค์จะทรงกอบกู้อิสราเอลด้วยมือของข้าพระองค์อย่างที่พระองค์ได้ตรัสไว้” 38แล้วก็เป็นเช่นนั้น วันรุ่งขึ้นเมื่อกิเดโอนตื่นแต่เช้า เขาก็บิดขนแกะมีน้ำค้างไหลออกมาเต็มชาม
39กิเดโอนจึงกราบทูลพระเจ้าว่า “ขออย่าทรงพระพิโรธเลย ข้าพระองค์จะทูลขออีกครั้งเดียว ขอข้าพระองค์ได้ทดสอบกับขนแกะอีกครั้งหนึ่ง คราวนี้ขอให้ขนแกะแห้ง ส่วนพื้นดินรอบๆ เปียกน้ำค้าง” 40คืนนั้นพระเจ้าทรงทำตามที่เขาทูลขอ ขนแกะแห้งอยู่ แต่พื้นดินมีน้ำค้างชุ่มไปหมด
1And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years. 2And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel: and because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and caves, and strong holds.6.2 prevailed: Heb. was strong 3And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east, even they came up against them; 4And they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass.6.4 sheep: or goat 5For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude; for both they and their camels were without number: and they entered into the land to destroy it. 6And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried unto the LORD.
7¶ And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD because of the Midianites, 8That the LORD sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, which said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;6.8 a prophet: Heb. a man a prophet 9And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drave them out from before you, and gave you their land; 10And I said unto you, I am the LORD your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not obeyed my voice.
11¶ And there came an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abi-ezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.6.11 Gideon: Gr. Gedeon6.11 to hide…: Heb. to cause it to flee 12And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour. 13And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites. 14And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee? 15And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.6.15 my family…: Heb. my thousand is the meanest 16And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man. 17And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, then shew me a sign that thou talkest with me. 18Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and set it before thee. And he said, I will tarry until thou come again.6.18 present: or, meat offering
19¶ And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it.6.19 a kid: Heb. a kid of the goats 20And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so.
21¶ Then the angel of the LORD put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes. Then the angel of the LORD departed out of his sight. 22And when Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the LORD, Gideon said, Alas, O Lord GOD! for because I have seen an angel of the LORD face to face. 23And the LORD said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die. 24Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovah-shalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abi-ezrites.6.24 Jehovah-shalom: that is, The LORD send peace
25¶ And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Take thy father’s young bullock, even the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the grove that is by it:6.25 even: or, and 26And build an altar unto the LORD thy God upon the top of this rock, in the ordered place, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the grove which thou shalt cut down.6.26 rock: Heb. strong place6.26 in the ordered…: or, in an orderly manner 27Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the LORD had said unto him: and so it was, because he feared his father’s household, and the men of the city, that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.
28¶ And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was cast down, and the grove was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built. 29And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And when they enquired and asked, they said, Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing. 30Then the men of the city said unto Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die: because he hath cast down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the grove that was by it. 31And Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye plead for Baal? will ye save him? he that will plead for him, let him be put to death whilst it is yet morning: if he be a god, let him plead for himself, because one hath cast down his altar. 32Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal plead against him, because he hath thrown down his altar.6.32 Jerubbaal: that is, Let Baal plead6.32 Jerubbesheth: that is, Let the shameful thing plead
33¶ Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east were gathered together, and went over, and pitched in the valley of Jezreel. 34But the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet; and Abi-ezer was gathered after him.6.34 came…: Heb. clothed6.34 gathered: Heb. called 35And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; who also was gathered after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zebulun, and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.6.35 gathered: Heb. called
36¶ And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said, 37Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor; and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said. 38And it was so: for he rose up early on the morrow, and thrust the fleece together, and wringed the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water. 39And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew. 40And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.
