อิสอัคกับเรเบคาห์
1อับราฮัมชรามากแล้ว และองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าทรงอวยพรเขาทุกด้าน 2วันหนึ่งอับราฮัมพูดกับหัวหน้าคนรับใช้24:2 หรือคนรับใช้ซึ่งอาวุโสที่สุดซึ่งเป็นผู้ดูแลทรัพย์สมบัติทั้งหมดของเขาว่า “จงเอามือของเจ้าไว้ที่หว่างขาของเรา 3ขอให้เจ้าสาบานต่อพระยาห์เวห์ พระเจ้าผู้สร้างสวรรค์และโลก ว่าเจ้าจะไม่หาลูกสาวของชาวคานาอันซึ่งเป็นหมู่ชนที่เราอาศัยอยู่นี้มาเป็นภรรยาลูกชายของเรา 4แต่จะไปยังบ้านเกิดและญาติพี่น้องของเรา เพื่อหาภรรยาให้อิสอัคลูกชายของเรา”
5คนรับใช้นั้นจึงถามเขาว่า “หากหญิงสาวนั้นไม่ยอมจากบ้านตามข้าพเจ้ามายังดินแดนนี้เล่า? ข้าพเจ้าควรจะพาลูกชายของท่านกลับไปยังบ้านเมืองที่ท่านจากมาหรือ?”
6อับราฮัมกล่าวว่า “อย่าพาลูกชายของเรากลับไปที่นั่นเด็ดขาด 7พระยาห์เวห์ พระเจ้าผู้สร้างสวรรค์ ผู้ทรงนำเราออกมาจากครัวเรือนของบิดาและจากบ้านเกิดเมืองนอนของเรา ผู้ซึ่งได้ตรัสและสัญญากับเราโดยคำปฏิญาณได้ตรัสว่า ‘เราจะมอบดินแดนนี้แก่เชื้อสาย24:7 หรือเมล็ดพันธุ์ของเจ้า’ พระองค์จะทรงให้ทูตของพระองค์นำเจ้าไป เพื่อเจ้าจะหาภรรยาให้ลูกชายของเราจากที่นั่น 8ถ้าหญิงนั้นไม่เต็มใจจะกลับมากับเจ้า เจ้าก็พ้นจากคำสาบานนี้ แต่อย่าพาลูกชายของเรากลับไปที่นั่นเด็ดขาด” 9ดังนั้นคนรับใช้จึงเอามือไว้ที่หว่างขาของอับราฮัมผู้เป็นนายและให้คำสาบานต่อเขาในเรื่องนี้
10แล้วคนรับใช้นั้นจึงนำอูฐของนายสิบตัวบรรทุกของมีค่าทุกประเภทจากนายของเขาออกเดินทางไปอารัมนาหะราอิม และมุ่งหน้าไปยังเมืองของนาโฮร์ 11เขาให้อูฐหมอบลงพักใกล้บ่อน้ำนอกเมือง ขณะนั้นใกล้เวลาเย็นแล้ว ซึ่งเป็นเวลาที่พวกผู้หญิงพากันออกมาตักน้ำ
12แล้วเขาอธิษฐานว่า “ข้าแต่พระยาห์เวห์พระเจ้าของอับราฮัมนายของข้าพระองค์ ขอประทานความสำเร็จแก่ข้าพระองค์ในวันนี้ และขอทรงเมตตาอับราฮัมนายของข้าพระองค์ตามที่ทรงสัญญาไว้ 13ดูเถิด ข้าพระองค์ยืนอยู่ที่ข้างบ่อน้ำนี้ และสาวๆ ในเมืองกำลังออกมาตักน้ำ 14ถ้าหากข้าพระองค์พูดกับหญิงสาวคนใดว่า ‘ขอน้ำในถังของเธอให้ฉันดื่มหน่อย’ แล้วนางตอบว่า ‘เชิญดื่มเถิด และฉันจะตักน้ำให้อูฐของท่านด้วย’ ก็ถือว่านางเป็นผู้ที่พระองค์ทรงเลือกสรรไว้ให้อิสอัคผู้รับใช้ของพระองค์ หากเป็นไปตามนี้ ข้าพระองค์ก็จะรู้ว่าพระองค์ได้ทรงเมตตานายของข้าพระองค์แล้ว”
15ขณะที่เขาอธิษฐานยังไม่ทันจบ เรเบคาห์ก็แบกถังน้ำใส่บ่าออกมา นางเป็นบุตรสาวของเบธูเอล ผู้เป็นบุตรชายของมิลคาห์ มิลคาห์เป็นภรรยาของนาโฮร์น้องชายของอับราฮัม 16เรเบคาห์เป็นหญิงงามมาก เป็นสาวพรหมจารี ไม่เคยหลับนอนกับผู้ชาย เธอลงไปที่บ่อน้ำ เติมน้ำเต็มถังแล้วก็ขึ้นมา
17คนรับใช้นั้นรีบวิ่งไปหานางและกล่าวว่า “ขอน้ำในถังของเธอให้ฉันหน่อยเถิด”
18นางตอบว่า “นายเจ้าข้า เชิญดื่มเถิด” แล้วนางก็รีบยกถังลงให้เขาดื่มทันที
19หลังจากให้เขาดื่มน้ำแล้ว นางก็พูดว่า “ฉันจะตักน้ำให้อูฐของท่านกินจนอิ่มด้วย” 20เธอจึงรีบเทน้ำทั้งหมดจากถังลงในราง แล้ววิ่งไปที่บ่อ ตักน้ำให้อูฐจนทุกตัวกินอิ่ม 21ชายนั้นเฝ้าสังเกตดูนางอยู่เงียบๆ เพื่อดูว่าองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าได้ทรงให้การเดินทางของเขาประสบความสำเร็จแล้วหรือไม่
22เมื่ออูฐทุกตัวกินน้ำอิ่มแล้ว เขาก็หยิบห่วงจมูกทองคำหนักราวสองสลึง24:22 ภาษาฮีบรูว่า 1 เบคา และกำไลทองคู่หนึ่งหนักราว 7 บาท24:22 ภาษาฮีบรูว่า 10 เชเขลออกมา 23และเขาถามว่า “เธอเป็นลูกเต้าเหล่าใคร กรุณาบอกฉันเถิดว่าที่บ้านบิดาของเธอมีที่ว่างให้พวกเราพักค้างคืนได้ไหม?”
24นางตอบเขาว่า “ฉันเป็นลูกสาวของเบธูเอล บุตรชายของมิลคาห์กับนาโฮร์” 25และนางกล่าวต่อไปว่า “เรามีฟางกับอาหารสัตว์มากมาย พร้อมทั้งที่ว่างให้ท่านพักค้างคืนด้วย”
26แล้วเขาจึงก้มลงกราบนมัสการองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า 27และกล่าวว่า “สรรเสริญพระยาห์เวห์ พระเจ้าของอับราฮัมนายของข้าพระองค์ ผู้ไม่ได้ทรงละทิ้งความเมตตาและความซื่อสัตย์ของพระองค์ต่อนายของข้าพระองค์ ส่วนข้าพระองค์นั้น องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าได้ทรงนำข้าพระองค์ให้เดินทางมาถึงบ้านพี่น้องนายของข้าพระองค์”
28นางจึงวิ่งกลับไปบอกเรื่องนี้แก่คนที่บ้านของมารดา 29เรเบคาห์มีพี่ชายคนหนึ่งชื่อลาบัน แล้วลาบันรีบรุดมาพบชายนั้นที่บ่อน้ำ 30ทันทีที่เขาเห็นห่วงจมูกและกำไลที่ข้อมือของน้องสาว และได้ฟังเรเบคาห์เล่าสิ่งที่ชายคนนั้นพูดกับนางแล้ว เขาก็ออกไปหาชายคนนั้นและพบเขายืนอยู่ข้างบ่อน้ำกับฝูงอูฐ 31ลาบันกล่าวว่า “มาเถิด ท่านผู้ที่องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าทรงอวยพร ทำไมท่านจึงยืนอยู่ข้างนอกตรงนี้? เราได้จัดบ้านไว้และเตรียมที่สำหรับฝูงอูฐแล้ว”
32ชายนั้นจึงไปที่บ้าน มีคนมาปลดสัมภาระลงจากฝูงอูฐ ให้ฟางและอาหารแก่พวกมัน และจัดหาน้ำมาให้เขาและคนของเขาล้างเท้า 33แล้วยกอาหารมาตั้งตรงหน้าชายนั้น แต่เขากล่าวว่า “ข้าพเจ้าจะยังไม่รับประทานจนกว่าจะได้บอกให้ท่านรู้ถึงสิ่งที่ข้าพเจ้าจำเป็นจะต้องพูด”
ลาบันกล่าวว่า “ถ้าอย่างนั้น จงบอกเราเถิด”
34เขาจึงพูดว่า “ข้าพเจ้าเป็นคนรับใช้ของอับราฮัม 35องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าทรงอวยพรนายของข้าพเจ้าอย่างล้นเหลือ จนท่านกลายเป็นคนมั่งคั่ง พระองค์ประทานฝูงแกะ ฝูงวัว อูฐ ลา เงินและทอง ตลอดจนคนรับใช้ชายหญิง 36ต่อมานางซาราห์ภรรยาของนายคลอดลูกชายคนหนึ่งให้นายเมื่อนาง24:36 หรือเขาอายุมากแล้ว และนายยกทรัพย์สมบัติทั้งหมดให้ลูกคนนี้ 37แล้วนายก็ให้ข้าพเจ้าสาบานและกล่าวว่า ‘เจ้าจะต้องไม่หาลูกสาวของชาวคานาอันซึ่งเป็นเจ้าของดินแดนที่เราอาศัยอยู่นี้มาเป็นภรรยาของลูกชายเรา 38แต่จงไปยังครอบครัวบิดาของเรา ไปยังญาติพี่น้องของเรา และหาภรรยาให้ลูกชายของเรา’
39“แล้วข้าพเจ้าก็ถามนายว่า ‘ถ้าหญิงนั้นไม่ยอมตามข้าพเจ้ามาเล่า?’
40“นายตอบว่า ‘องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าผู้ที่เราดำเนินชีวิตอยู่ในทางของพระองค์นั้นจะทรงส่งทูตของพระองค์ไปกับเจ้า และจะทรงทำให้การเดินทางของเจ้าประสบความสำเร็จ เพื่อเจ้าจะสามารถหาภรรยาให้ลูกชายของเราจากญาติพี่น้องของเรา และจากครอบครัวบิดาของเรา 41เมื่อเจ้าไปหาญาติพี่น้องของเราแล้ว เจ้าก็พ้นจากคำสาบานที่ให้กับเรา ถึงแม้ว่าพวกเขาไม่ยอมยกนางให้เจ้า เจ้าก็จะพ้นจากคำสาบาน’
42“วันนี้เมื่อข้าพเจ้ามาถึงบ่อน้ำก็อธิษฐานว่า ‘ข้าแต่พระยาห์เวห์ พระเจ้าของอับราฮัมนายของข้าพระองค์ ถ้าเป็นพระประสงค์ของพระองค์ โปรดให้การเดินทางของข้าพระองค์ครั้งนี้ประสบความสำเร็จ 43ดูเถิด ข้าพระองค์กำลังยืนอยู่ข้างบ่อน้ำ ถ้าหญิงสาวคนหนึ่งออกมาตักน้ำ และข้าพระองค์พูดกับนางว่า “กรุณาให้ฉันดื่มน้ำจากถังของเธอสักหน่อยเถิด” 44และถ้านางตอบว่า “เชิญดื่มเถิด และฉันจะตักน้ำให้อูฐของท่านด้วย” ก็ขอให้นางเป็นผู้ที่องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าทรงเลือกสรรไว้ให้ลูกชายของนายข้าพเจ้า’
45“ก่อนที่ข้าพเจ้าจะจบคำอธิษฐานในใจ เรเบคาห์เดินออกมาพร้อมกับแบกถังน้ำบนบ่า นางเดินไปที่บ่อน้ำและตักน้ำ แล้วข้าพเจ้าก็พูดกับนางว่า ‘ขอน้ำให้ฉันดื่มหน่อยเถิด’
46“นางก็รีบยกถังลงมาจากบ่าและบอกว่า ‘เชิญดื่มเถิด และฉันจะตักน้ำให้ฝูงอูฐของท่านด้วย’ ดังนั้นข้าพเจ้าจึงดื่ม และนางก็ตักน้ำให้ฝูงอูฐด้วย
47“ข้าพเจ้าถามนางว่า ‘เธอเป็นลูกเต้าเหล่าใคร?’
“นางก็ตอบว่า ‘เป็นลูกสาวของเบธูเอล ผู้เป็นบุตรของนาโฮร์กับมิลคาห์’
“ข้าพเจ้าจึงสวมห่วงที่จมูกของนางและสวมกำไลที่แขนของนาง 48แล้วข้าพเจ้าก็ก้มลงกราบนมัสการองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าข้าพเจ้าสรรเสริญพระยาห์เวห์ พระเจ้าของอับราฮัมนายของข้าพเจ้า พระองค์ทรงนำข้าพเจ้ามาถูกทางเพื่อจะได้นำหลานสาวของน้องชายนายข้าพเจ้าไปให้แก่ลูกชายของเขา 49บัดนี้ ถ้าท่านจะกรุณานายของข้าพเจ้า ขอบอกข้าพเจ้า และถ้าท่านจะปฏิเสธ ก็โปรดบอกข้าพเจ้าเถิด เพื่อข้าพเจ้าจะได้รู้ว่าควรทำอย่างไรต่อไป”
50ลาบันกับเบธูเอลจึงตอบว่า “เรื่องนี้เป็นมาจากองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าไม่ว่าจะดีหรือร้ายก็ขอให้เป็นไปตามนั้น 51เรเบคาห์อยู่นี่ พานางไปเถิด ให้นางไปเป็นภรรยาลูกชายเจ้านายของท่าน ตามที่องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าทรงนำ”
52เมื่อคนรับใช้ของอับราฮัมได้ยินเช่นนั้นก็ก้มกราบลงถึงพื้นนมัสการองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า 53แล้วคนรับใช้หยิบแก้วแหวนเงินทองและเสื้อผ้าอาภรณ์ให้นางเรเบคาห์ และให้ของขวัญล้ำค่าต่างๆ แก่พี่ชายและมารดาของนาง 54แล้วคนรับใช้นั้นกับคนของเขาก็กินดื่มและพักค้างคืนที่นั่น
เมื่อพวกเขาตื่นขึ้นในเช้าวันต่อมา คนรับใช้นั้นจึงกล่าวว่า “โปรดส่งข้าพเจ้ากลับไปหานายของข้าพเจ้าเถิด”
55แต่พี่ชายและมารดาของเรเบคาห์ตอบว่า “ขอให้นางอยู่กับเราอีกสักสิบวันแล้วท่าน24:55 หรือนางค่อยไป”
56แต่คนรับใช้นั้นกล่าวกับพวกเขาว่า “อย่ารั้งข้าพเจ้าไว้เลย ในเมื่อองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าประทานความสำเร็จแก่การเดินทางของข้าพเจ้าแล้ว ขอได้ส่งข้าพเจ้ากลับไปหานายของข้าพเจ้าเถิด”
57แล้วพวกเขาจึงกล่าวว่า “ให้เราเรียกนางมาถามดู” 58ดังนั้นพวกเขาจึงเรียกเรเบคาห์มาถามว่า “เจ้าจะไปกับชายผู้นี้หรือไม่?”
นางตอบว่า “ฉันจะไป”
59พวกเขาจึงส่งเรเบคาห์น้องสาวของเขาไปพร้อมกับพี่เลี้ยงของนางและคนรับใช้ของอับราฮัมกับคนของเขา 60พวกเขาอวยพรเรเบคาห์และกล่าวกับนางว่า
“น้องเอ๋ย ขอให้ลูกหลานของเจ้าทวีขึ้น
เป็นแสนเป็นล้าน
ขอให้วงศ์วานของเจ้าครอบครอง
ประตูเมืองของศัตรู”
61จากนั้นเรเบคาห์กับบรรดาสาวใช้ของนางก็เตรียมตัวไว้พร้อมและขึ้นอูฐออกเดินทางกลับไปพร้อมกับคนรับใช้นั้น ดังนั้นคนรับใช้ก็พาเรเบคาห์จากไป
62ฝ่ายอิสอัคกลับมาจากเบเออร์ลาไฮรอย เพราะเขาอยู่ในเนเกบ 63เย็นวันหนึ่งเขาออกไปที่ท้องทุ่ง เดินคิดใคร่ครวญอยู่ และเมื่อเขาเงยหน้าขึ้นก็เห็นขบวนอูฐกำลังเคลื่อนเข้ามา 64เรเบคาห์ก็เงยหน้าขึ้นมองเห็นอิสอัค นางลงมาจากอูฐ 65และถามคนรับใช้นั้นว่า “ชายคนที่เดินลัดทุ่งมาหาเรานั้นคือใคร?”
คนรับใช้นั้นตอบว่า “ท่านเป็นนายของข้าพเจ้า” นางจึงหยิบผ้ามาคลุมหน้า
66แล้วคนรับใช้นั้นก็เล่าทุกสิ่งที่เขาทำให้อิสอัคฟัง 67อิสอัคก็นำเรเบคาห์เข้าไปในเต็นท์ที่ซาราห์ผู้เป็นมารดาของเขาเคยอาศัย และแต่งงานกับเรเบคาห์ ดังนั้นนางจึงมาเป็นภรรยาของเขา และเขารักนาง และอิสอัคก็คลายความเศร้าโศกที่มารดาของเขาเสียชีวิต
Isaac and Rebekah
1Abraham was now very old, and the Lord had blessed him in every way. 2He said to the senior servant in his household, the one in charge of all that he had, ‘Put your hand under my thigh. 3I want you to swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living, 4but will go to my country and my own relatives and get a wife for my son Isaac.’
5The servant asked him, ‘What if the woman is unwilling to come back with me to this land? Shall I then take your son back to the country you came from?’
6‘Make sure that you do not take my son back there,’ Abraham said. 7‘The Lord, the God of heaven, who brought me out of my father’s household and my native land and who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, “To your offspring24:7 Or seed I will give this land” – he will send his angel before you so that you can get a wife for my son from there. 8If the woman is unwilling to come back with you, then you will be released from this oath of mine. Only do not take my son back there.’ 9So the servant put his hand under the thigh of his master Abraham and swore an oath to him concerning this matter.
10Then the servant left, taking with him ten of his master’s camels loaded with all kinds of good things from his master. He set out for Aram Naharaim24:10 That is, North-west Mesopotamia and made his way to the town of Nahor. 11He made the camels kneel down near the well outside the town; it was towards evening, the time the women go out to draw water.
12Then he prayed, ‘Lord, God of my master Abraham, make me successful today, and show kindness to my master Abraham. 13See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water. 14May it be that when I say to a young woman, “Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,” and she says, “Drink, and I’ll water your camels too” – let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master.’
15Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel son of Milkah, who was the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor. 16The woman was very beautiful, a virgin; no man had ever slept with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar and came up again.
17The servant hurried to meet her and said, ‘Please give me a little water from your jar.’
18‘Drink, my lord,’ she said, and quickly lowered the jar to her hands and gave him a drink.
19After she had given him a drink, she said, ‘I’ll draw water for your camels too, until they have had enough to drink.’ 20So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough, ran back to the well to draw more water, and drew enough for all his camels. 21Without saying a word, the man watched her closely to learn whether or not the Lord had made his journey successful.
22When the camels had finished drinking, the man took out a gold nose ring weighing a beka24:22 That is, about 5.7 grams and two gold bracelets weighing ten shekels.24:22 That is, about 115 grams 23Then he asked, ‘Whose daughter are you? Please tell me, is there room in your father’s house for us to spend the night?’
24She answered him, ‘I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son that Milkah bore to Nahor.’ 25And she added, ‘We have plenty of straw and fodder, as well as room for you to spend the night.’
26Then the man bowed down and worshipped the Lord, 27saying, ‘Praise be to the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who has not abandoned his kindness and faithfulness to my master. As for me, the Lord has led me on the journey to the house of my master’s relatives.’
28The young woman ran and told her mother’s household about these things. 29Now Rebekah had a brother named Laban, and he hurried out to the man at the spring. 30As soon as he had seen the nose ring, and the bracelets on his sister’s arms, and had heard Rebekah tell what the man said to her, he went out to the man and found him standing by the camels near the spring. 31‘Come, you who are blessed by the Lord,’ he said. ‘Why are you standing out here? I have prepared the house and a place for the camels.’
32So the man went to the house, and the camels were unloaded. Straw and fodder were brought for the camels, and water for him and his men to wash their feet. 33Then food was set before him, but he said, ‘I will not eat until I have told you what I have to say.’
‘Then tell us,’ Laban said.
34So he said, ‘I am Abraham’s servant. 35The Lord has blessed my master abundantly, and he has become wealthy. He has given him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, male and female servants, and camels and donkeys. 36My master’s wife Sarah has borne him a son in her old age, and he has given him everything he owns. 37And my master made me swear an oath, and said, “You must not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live, 38but go to my father’s family and to my own clan, and get a wife for my son.”
39‘Then I asked my master, “What if the woman will not come back with me?”
40‘He replied, “The Lord, before whom I have walked faithfully, will send his angel with you and make your journey a success, so that you can get a wife for my son from my own clan and from my father’s family. 41You will be released from my oath if, when you go to my clan, they refuse to give her to you – then you will be released from my oath.”
42‘When I came to the spring today, I said, “Lord, God of my master Abraham, if you will, please grant success to the journey on which I have come. 43See, I am standing beside this spring. If a young woman comes out to draw water and I say to her, ‘Please let me drink a little water from your jar,’ 44and if she says to me, ‘Drink, and I’ll draw water for your camels too,’ let her be the one the Lord has chosen for my master’s son.”
45‘Before I finished praying in my heart, Rebekah came out, with her jar on her shoulder. She went down to the spring and drew water, and I said to her, “Please give me a drink.”
46‘She quickly lowered her jar from her shoulder and said, “Drink, and I’ll water your camels too.” So I drank, and she watered the camels also.
47‘I asked her, “Whose daughter are you?”
‘She said, “The daughter of Bethuel son of Nahor, whom Milkah bore to him.”
‘Then I put the ring in her nose and the bracelets on her arms, 48and I bowed down and worshipped the Lord. I praised the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me on the right road to get the granddaughter of my master’s brother for his son. 49Now if you will show kindness and faithfulness to my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, so I may know which way to turn.’
50Laban and Bethuel answered, ‘This is from the Lord; we can say nothing to you one way or the other. 51Here is Rebekah; take her and go, and let her become the wife of your master’s son, as the Lord has directed.’
52When Abraham’s servant heard what they said, he bowed down to the ground before the Lord. 53Then the servant brought out gold and silver jewellery and articles of clothing and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave costly gifts to her brother and to her mother. 54Then he and the men who were with him ate and drank and spent the night there.
When they got up the next morning, he said, ‘Send me on my way to my master.’
55But her brother and her mother replied, ‘Let the young woman remain with us ten days or so; then you24:55 Or she may go.’
56But he said to them, ‘Do not detain me, now that the Lord has granted success to my journey. Send me on my way so I may go to my master.’
57Then they said, ‘Let’s call the young woman and ask her about it.’ 58So they called Rebekah and asked her, ‘Will you go with this man?’
‘I will go,’ she said.
59So they sent their sister Rebekah on her way, along with her nurse and Abraham’s servant and his men. 60And they blessed Rebekah and said to her,
‘Our sister, may you increase
to thousands upon thousands;
may your offspring possess
the cities of their enemies.’
61Then Rebekah and her attendants got ready and mounted the camels and went back with the man. So the servant took Rebekah and left.
