Żony i mężowie
1-2Również wy, żony, bądźcie uległe wobec swoich mężów. Nawet jeśli niektórzy z nich nie są posłuszni słowu Bożemu, dzięki waszej postawie mogą zostać zdobyci dla Boga. Wasze zachowanie—nienaganne i podobające się Bogu—może bowiem przemówić do nich lepiej niż słowa.
3Nie zwracajcie na siebie uwagi fryzurą, biżuterią czy modnymi ubraniami, 4ale pięknem wewnętrznym: łagodnością i pokojem ducha. To piękno nie przemija i ma wielką wartość w oczach Boga. 5Cechy te były ozdobą świętych kobiet, które ufały Bogu i były uległe wobec swoich mężów. 6Jedną z nich była Sara, która okazywała posłuszeństwo Abrahamowi, uznając go za głowę rodziny. Dobrze postępując i niczego się nie obawiając, będziecie do niej podobne.
7Wy zaś, mężowie, okazujcie żonom szacunek i bądźcie wyrozumiali wobec słabej płci, a Bóg będzie wysłuchiwał waszych modlitw. Pamiętajcie, że wasze żony razem z wami otrzymają dar życia wiecznego.
Cierpienie z powodu dobra
8Wszyscy bądźcie jednomyślni, pełni współczucia, przyjacielskiej miłości i pokory. 9Nie odpłacajcie złem za zło i nie obrażajcie tych, którzy was obrażają. Przeciwnie—tym, którzy was krzywdzą, życzcie szczęścia. Was samych Bóg również obdarzył bowiem szczęściem. 10Pismo mówi:
„Ten, kto chce być szczęśliwy i cieszyć się życiem,
niech przestanie grzeszyć mową oraz kłamać.
11Niech odwróci się od zła i czyni dobro.
Niech szuka tego, co prowadzi do pokoju,
i niech do niego dąży.
12Pan troszczy się bowiem o prawych
i wysłuchuje ich modlitw.
Odwraca się natomiast od tych, którzy czynią zło”.
13Czy ktoś będzie chciał was skrzywdzić, jeśli z całych sił będziecie czynić dobro? 14A jeśli nawet tak by się stało, to i tak będziecie szczęśliwi. Nie dajcie się więc nikomu zastraszyć ani zaniepokoić, 15ale z całego serca oddawajcie chwałę Chrystusowi, naszemu Panu. Gdy inni będą was pytać o źródło waszej nadziei, bądźcie gotowi, aby dać im odpowiedź. 16Czyńcie to jednak łagodnie, z szacunkiem i bez złych intencji. W ten sposób zawstydzicie bowiem tych, którzy oczerniają was z powodu waszej wierności Chrystusowi. 17Lepiej jest bowiem cierpieć, jeśli taka jest wola Boga, z powodu dobrego postępowania niż z powodu popełnionego zła.
Wartość cierpienia
18Chrystus również doznał cierpień—raz na zawsze płacąc za ludzkie grzechy. Był niewinny, ale cierpiał za winnych, aby pojednać was z Bogiem. Poniósł fizyczną śmierć, ale został ożywiony przez Ducha.
19W mocy tego Ducha głosił dobrą nowinę duchom ludzi, zamkniętym w więzieniu. 20Dawno temu, gdy Noe budował okręt, ludzie ci nie okazali posłuszeństwa Bogu, choć On cierpliwie na to czekał. W okręcie tym uratowało się więc przed potopem tylko osiem osób. 21Teraz takim ratunkiem jest chrzest. On zbawia was nie dlatego, że w wodzie oczyszczacie wasze ciało z brudu, ale dlatego, że prosicie Boga o czyste sumienie. Wszystko to jest możliwe dzięki Jezusowi Chrystusowi, który zmartwychwstał 22i wstąpił do nieba, a teraz przebywa po prawej stronie Boga i stoi ponad wszystkimi aniołami, władcami tego świata, a także duchowymi mocami.
1Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, 2when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. 3Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. 4Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. 5For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands, 6like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.
7Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.
Suffering for Doing Good
8Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble. 9Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. 10For,
“Whoever would love life
and see good days
must keep their tongue from evil
and their lips from deceitful speech.
11They must turn from evil and do good;
they must seek peace and pursue it.

Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. 17For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. 18For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.
